Guernsey 2008

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.

Well there I was driving past a certain NW bay when I saw a light underwater, then someone faffing about in the water. Then I also saw a familiar van and DB sticker, so left the standard " windscreen wiper stuck out - I was here" sign. It looked quite calm in that sheltered bit too...
 
Popped down North for a swim this evening, gorgeous in with super duper vis. lovely calm evening although the swell made it interesting on the beach.
Unfortunately i obviously chose a bad spot as i didn't see a single fishy. one of the danglers faired better with a bass, so they were obviously out there...
saw some small squids which were the highlight of the evening:

the weekend is looking pretty good once the 15ft swell has gone through!!

Col, have you sorted your torch out yet?

Slightly off-topic but just watched another of those fishing programmes with Henry Gilbey fishing for Bass in Crapaud-land. The guide was some bloke called Andy Ingle?? He managed to land 2 bass on one retrieve whilst spinning and then he mentioned that he was a spearfisherman too which was good. Some lovely spots they were at too, South-East of the Island. They even caught bass flyfishing in the shallows at the start of the turn for the incoming tide.
 
I think that was Andrew Syvret if i remember the episode correctly Spaniard, a well known crapaud fisherman and marine biologist. Didn't realise he speared too but its no surprise, just a general al round sea type.

South east crapaudland is an amazing environment, tide goes out miles through rocky sandy gullies, bass city!

Nice squid Jonny, keep up the reports, just one thing though it's up north, and down south (bloney foreigners) :t
 
Andew Syvret. He hates that gilbey programme, says it was a nightmare. Yes he spears a bit and is a keen boat angler. He's also one of those marine biologists and very into all things fishy. He's a member of the Fishing-Guernsey forums that a few of us locals belong to. Aparently there are no decent forums in Jersey :t.

Jersy certainly has some amazing intertidal areas, especially as they have a tidal range of nearly 40 foot while we only manage 30 foot. Some good spearo's in Jersey and although some belong to DB they don't seem to post much. Got a strong club scene I believe.

Looks like I may have some more time to be spearing next year, I assume someone is praying for viz!! Did anyone put that on their list and hand it to Santa the other day when he turned the Christmas lights on??
 
Nice suit tom.

i managed a swim last night for an hour and a half, i figured that the water might have cleared after last weeks wind/waves... it had vis was around 2-3m so enough to see what was going on. in fact there was very little about, lots of broken weed tho. i did see a small bass and a large pollack (missed the pollack as it was too big ;-) ) lol i've not seen a 'big' pollack here yet..
then later when i came in and unloaded the gun (you have to unload at some point right) i saw a big bass, i guess 5lb, just sitting in the water right next to me, in spite of the noise i was making. anyways i tried to punch him on the nose....
D3 said the water was 10 degrees. the air was defo a lot less than that!
No flatties seen again :-(

Yep that was a magpie masterpiece, I was very disappointed that there was no sequel this year.
 
Sorry to disappoint Foxfish but if we'd done a sequel this year it would have been a video of some tea coloured water and not a lot else!

That was the first vid I did Pav, there's a few others if you look in that Youtube users vids.

yes, I've just been browsing a few, .. but my broadband is so slow I have to wait for each to load before I view :head ... BT :vangry

I was suprised at how few Bass feature in the vids. Mostly flaties, ray and red mullet... and the squids / cuttle fish? Is this typical or is there more to see.

I've only done a few night dives in shallow waters but keen to get a few more in next season.
 
In my experience you see bass at night but no more than during the day. THAT SAID, at night I generally prefer to stick to the cleanish areas, weed beds at night give me the creeps!

Would be interested in OMD's input on this...
 
think i prefer the cleaner bottoms to! my first night was in chesil cove, diving into kelp covered rocks in the dark is no fun! plus it seams everything comes out to play on the sand at night
 
Anyone fancy a dive in the harbour on Christmas day? I'm not sure spearing's also allowed, nor that the vis will be any good, nor any fish around - plus I won't even be here!

Anyone done it before? Dave?
 
My brother tank dived the harbour last Christmas, I tried to persuade him to go down the end of the breakwater and get me some lead but he declined... He had a few scallops but not many.
 
My parents used to do it every year. Not a lot to see apparently.
 
A harbour dive on christmas morning was half a plan I had since I'm not skiing this christmas .... boo hoo (best early snow since 1932 apparently)

Will keep in touch nearer the time to see what the weather is doing.
 
I dont think it is a free for all this year - if you want to dive the harbour this Christmas day you need to contact the harbour master first - sure I read that in the press?
