I think all of this is connected. It's the bad vis that's causing the lack of flatties. Local angling boats working a couple of rods were averaging 6 brill/turbot a trip over the last many years. This year they're averaging nothing.

Ha, as an ex janner (14 yrs in Plymouth) i never did any spearfishing there, but found a few small bass on lures at lopwell dam & bigbury tho..
Went in for a swim this evening, just down the path from my house. Waaaahoooo!!!
What an amazing time, so much life in the water.. All the sandeels were there...
foxfish was recently telling me about swimming with a shoal of mackerel.. saw them today... wow, fast as .. just a close glimpse as they flashed past. impressive.
Then the bass.. dozens of them.
the first one came along and - after days of no real chances, i rushed the shot and missed. time to try to video, reload and try again.
whilst reloading the fish stayed with me, i sorted my breathing and dropped for a wait on the sand. didnt take long before the bass came to look.. i would guess there were 20 good size fish, just awesome. i took the best most reliable shot. dinner.
vis is ok, but not what it has was.. 3-4m at best.

Well done John. Good tides for evening dives this week but not so good forcast.
All the west looked blown out today, with a fairly big swell. looked in Fontenelle (sheltered north coast) and there was a band of brown water from the shore out several hundred yards with an estimated vis of six inches max. Beyond that was white waves.

I drove around today, spurred on by Jonnys report (well done Jonny!) looking for a good spot; Portelet, L'Eree, Perelle, Vazon, Cobo, Grandes Rocques, Albeq, Ladies Bay, Pembroke, Fontenelle, Petit Bot and Saints. They all looked like tea. At Saints you could see a great river of 'brown' being swept past the stacks.
The boys down at Saints were very vocal about the situation. :vangry Various theories, all dredging based, only the location differed. One mentioned that the Cormarants haven't bred well this year because they can't see to catch.
Off to Jersey on Saturday, if anyone wants anything (smallish) from Apnea that doesn't warrant the postage p.m. me.

My cousin mentioned the same thing (she is a 'twitcher'.. at least I think that is the right term) - a very poor season breeding wise for alot of seabirds - can't remember what she said exactly but at any rate not many eggs/chick out there.
Popped out in the kayak last night from low to mid rising and was surprised at how clear it was out the back of my local bay. Could see rocks under the surface crystal clear and also dropped a 10m line down and could make out the sand weed border and detail at 5m.
THought I'd go for a dive the next day (today) but the swell overnight / today put paid to those plans !
Oh, no fish on the rod/plug either (prob wrong one/wrong tide/wrong area ! Was using a Maria Chase BW and a Yozuri Crystal Minnow - water was about 1m to 2m over the reef)

There are fish out there....St Sampson's marina lunchtime yesterday. Have seen people with spearguns walking the pontoons ....so would this count for a fish of the month?
Taken up a new sport in my quest for fresh protein!!! Actually we shot them with .22 air rifle.

it has been pretty successful from the kayak, i think it waggles well at low speed!

What makes you think it was on the common? Besides which, yes its legal on public land in the right season, which I can't remember at the moment, because I shoot on a load of farms which I have permission for so I can hunt all year.
Why would it not be healthy? Its free range meat at its best, and bloney tasty too, though tbh I prefer woodies to rabbits.

It may look like the common, but its actually my lawn!!! Hence the reason for culling them.
At first my wife and the children thought they were cute but now even they realise they are a bloney nuisance and good to eat.
