One point of note was spotting a fish I have only seen twice before in over 40 years diving in Guernsey. It was a big stinger (common stingray), about 30lb I reckon. The 2 other stingers I've seen have been in shallow water sandy bays. This one however, was lying half buried on a shingle bank in 90 foot of water. The tail was uncovered and half way down its length, stark black against the yellow gravel, was a single 3 inch long barb.
I saw 3 sting ray in my years of spearfishing ,coincidentally the same number as Dave now has,so that's a fair indication of how common they are in local waters.As I was snorkelling my sightings were relatively inshore (Rocquaine,Port Grat and Herm).
They're certainly not as common locally as electric ray though the existence of both of these species off our shores is often greeted with great surprise by non-fisher folk.
Until diving down for closer inspection I assumed the first one I spotted was a dumped car wheel as they appear from a distance as round black objects.
A speartip tail-poke resulted in a gentle departure,the beast simply upped and flapped off...unlike the electric's habit when threatened of back-flipping, presumably in an attempt to 'shock'!
I'll put my gps in... ;-)
