I'm not from Guernsey, either. I'm from Arizona. And yes, this is what I'm asking.
I didn't ask if anyone *sensible* speared one. I'm not even limiting it to spears. Anything weapon in the water. Really, I'm not even limiting it to attacks. I'm getting at what makes them feel threatened, and how they move, when they are. A swimmer with no weapon could accidentally alarm them. (Maybe. That's part of what I'm asking,)
If it'll help you understand my situation, I'm this guy:

And just like neurologists rely on people who suffer from horrible brain injuries, some inflicted due to the bad choices of the victim, if someone did try to go after a basking shark or accidentally got one riled up, I could use the information of its resultant behavior.
I'm not technically sure if you find my question absurd because it would be so colossally dangerous to attempt (I assume so, based in my research), or because it is so obvious that they were hunted in the past for oil and still are in some regions for their fins. But those hunters are doing so from safe -- one hopes, for their sakes -- boats, as I understand it. Though even small boats were said to be under threat.
So what about congers, then? rofl
