Guernsey 2013

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
As Mart says, it's the base of kelp fronds, often has a big air filled globe, used to enjoy going around stamping on them as a child.

The skin on them isn't that thick so not sure they'd be very good for the purpose, though they may toughen up if dried out? Doubt they would sit like a bowl too well without some careful carving, scallop shells would make a better piss bowl allround.

Are these lion tails the same as oarweed, or is that different?

BTW, Foxfish, may I name a pub on Tane the Fishing Fox -- with a sign with a fox relaxing with a fishing pole over the door? It wouldn't be a major setting; most of the action on shore takes place in the Elizabeth Castle analogue, but it would be used recurring.

Might end up having them use stone bowls, anyway.

Sounds like that's a surer bet.

Guys if you have not signed up for the Guernsey deeper Blue meet in August please do because I need to book Herm tomorrow & i need numbers for the Friday social too!

Hello guys

Yesterday was my day off then i decided to do my first dive here (guernsey) but i had "little problems" xD

My gloves/boots didn't arrived yet (order from internet, seac make) and i went without it (not really good idea, after 35 - 40mint i really need to go out from the water.. already no feel the hands/ foot..) :duh The rest of the body was good, i have 5 mm gear.

8° C sea temperature is really pain for me xD Never been in water like that (cold) in Madeira is around 22° C in summer and 18° C in winter..

I went between 11:00 ~ 11:40 (low tide), visibility was bad. I was little bit confused first because i never went for freediving alone before and second without sunshine and with LOTS of plants sea looks very dark haha.

I must get more confidence and/or find a mate to go with me .

Now i need to wait for gloves/boots arrive and try again :)

"First time is always hard " haha :D:D:D

10/10 for effort. 8°C is often enough to put most people off WITH gloves and socks. :hmm Unfortunately the vis and weather sounds like an average kinda dive up north :D

Been diving Jersey and being well looked after here by some local spearos.. . Looking forward to experiencing Guernsey some time: -)

Thats some good kit you have there

Took new toys for a swim today, missed low tide by about an hour and a half but had a great swim. Went south west and despite the wind saw and missed plenty of fish, saw a dozen or so bass and loads of fat mullet really close in. Bagged a behemoth of a cuttlefish fish which has a date with tempura and sweet chili sauce tomorrow. A few lobsters around, collected a few, but after checking with the guage on the beach only kept 2.
Excellent dive, and a pleasure to be back under the water, a few minor issues though.
It is abundantly clear that I need at leas another 2 kg. Does anyone rate back weights?
My fins worked great but destroyed my feet, serious cramp.

My new mask fogged a lot, anyone have any tips for remedying this?

My gun handle isn't very grippy which makes following fish or moving the gun across my body difficult, anyone got any suggestions on what I might coat it with?

Nice work Jon.

Weights: Back weights are great, give you better posture, but harder to dump in an emergency.

Mask: New masks often need some chemical removing from the glass, toothpaste rubbed in usually sorts it, do a search, lots of threads.

Grip: Try sugru, search Internet for it, great stuff, can make it all pointy to provide grip.

Feet: What thickness socks you using? Try thinner. I got that bad too, dropping socks from 5mm to 3mm pretty much solved it. Different foot pockets suit different feet. Do your fins have removable pockets?

Cheers TJ, will order some 3mm socks as mine are 5. Was just astounded by how warm the suit was yesterday, can't believe I've roughed it in surfing suits all this time. Yesterday in the new suit felt like summer in the old one, amazed.

well done Fro! bet you had a good diner :)
nice to know i'm not the only one getting in the water here...
anyone else???
