I regularly catch them by hand. They are fairly passive when picked up, just flaring their tentacles in a threatening manner. As yet, none have quirted ink when I have picked them up, but a few have when released.

Hi Eric, are you still writing? its going to be an epic eh? :)
cuttlefish are fun to play with - they kind of scoot along and then sit in the sand to wait for you to catch up...
just a few weeks ago there were just loads of cuttlefish 'bones' washed up on the beach; i guess there's a time when they die off ?
i'm planning a night dive next week, i wonder if there's any around at the mo?

Here's my Banks board I bought from the States last year, quite large but Hot Mango colour helps keep the boats away ;)

Hi Jonny, good to see that u r back from ur hols. Today I had my first local dive since returning from two weeks diving in sunny Cuba. Despite the chill, me and JKS managed a short dive this morning. Beautiful sunshine and good vis but also a very cold 7c. We survived for an hour or so. Even with my 7mm suit and 2mm under vest, I found it a huge contrast to Cubas 27c waters! Today we were looking for the early run of plaice but none found. Not even any sign of them. I think things may be delayed a little this year due to the very cold winter and equally cold spring. That said, we found loads of small eyed rays, I stopped counting at 20+. Most were 1-2lb, biggest were only about 4-5lb. managed to pick up a couple of the bigger ones in my hands, but all left to grow bigger. Despite the chill, enjoyed the dive, sunshine and clear water and great to see a few fish. Might even have another go tomorrow morning at a different venue!

27c sounds pretty warm Mike, must have been a proper shock getting in at home afterwards.
i managed an hour this afternoon, saw a few mullet, but nothing i wanted to take home. well cold today, down to 7 degrees - was getting 8-9 on the d3 a couple of weeks ago.

Went again this morning. Sea was still ######## freezing, but vis was great . Had better luck today and found a plaice and a nice dover sole! Summers coming!

Hello :)

im new in this forum , I'm in guernsey less than 1 year. I did spearfishing In Madeira many times but in here no try yet. I would like to start but first i need to know the rules .

we need any type of licence? we are allowed to do freediving everywhere??

My gear is 5mm do you think is it enough for here? This water look "little bit cold" x)

thank you

Hi Miguel,
welcome to DeeperBlue - and also to Guernsey! :)
no rules to worry about, except minimum fish sizes. Try and choose your dives spots to avoid the boats, and/or use a float and flag.
5mm wetsuit will be fine for the summer, maybe you will want a vest whilst the water is not so warm.
look forward to your catch reports... :)

My new look for Guernsey this year! :girlie

whadda ya think? blue or green Willikini? :D

I'm not sure what the village does for one now I've left, but they've never asked me back?? :hmm

Miguel, as Jonny said a 5mm will be fine here from May right through to December. No license needed, just get in the water where ever you want, apart from the two main harbours in town and at the bridge.

We look forward to hearing how you get on. :)
