Guernsey 2017

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
We got to the beach last night and it was perfectly still.
Spoke to a guy on the beach who was fishing just to let him know what we were up to and off we went.
Viz was very good and within 1 min I found a nice lobster on the sand which came along for the ride. There were plenty of other smaller lobsters walking around which made for really good viewing. Worked our way out doing some drops and then made our way into the shallows. We stayed in for about 2.5 hrs and saw plenty of species. The highlights of the dive for me were seeing a nice sized sea trout and a topknot. The only bad point for me was I was under weighted!! Really nice getting up close and watching all the species and finally starting to relax abit now as I have a few night dives under my belt.
Hopefully Edd will post a few pics up at some point. Cheers to Ed and Edd for a enjoyable night. (y)

Good dive, nice company.
Saw quite a few squid and just watched this info about their skin:

A lot of sole around but all about hand size or smaller. Same with the red mullet.

A good range of species seen and left all the bass for the fisherman on the shore.

Didn't see the sea trout but remember how good they taste! Next time Kerin.

Topknot was quite a big one as far as they go I think. Fun times, but is is Augtober today ?!

Nice of you to leave the bass for the fisherman but he didn't a single bite during that session

Got in at Belgrave for the first day of the comp today. First half of my dive I had half decent viz and took a couple of bass, one of which was just under 6lb so happy with that. Second half not so great when the wind picked up. Saw a good few mullet but still can't bring myself to pull the trigger.
Well done to Edd and Pierre on a nice mixed bag and a couple of cracking bass.

Anyone been in this week?
Myself, Ed (portinfer) and the stranger otherwise known as Jonny went for a dip this afty. Headed North and we were greeted by surprisingly decent viz. First 2 hrs of my dive were pretty quiet but towards the end I saw a couple of bass around the 2lb mark which saw me first. I spent ages in the string weed but nothing seen in there at all. 15 mins before we got out I dropped down and saw a nice sized bass swimming towards me but he disappeared through the weed on the bottom, I moved forward and he appeared swimming away from me, took a quick shot before it was too late and manage to get him on the spear. Didn't weigh but defiantly between 4 and 5lb
Found a couple of really decent overhangs today which were almost forming small caves with weed hanging down over them, so I will defiantly take my torch along next time for a closer inspection.
Nice dive with good company.

Well done for getting in Brandon, it is a great idea to find different spots although I think it is fair to say the South coast is the least productive part of our island for spearfishing. Plenty of scallops though, best to look for those on a big spring tide at low water, lots of Red mullet in the Autumn but the commercial fishermen will be setting miles of nets for them at the same time.
Even in the hay days of flatfish & bass, the South coast was never a first choice.
I can remember when I was around 12-13 years old & going for a dive with my two brothers at Petit Bot. Dave caught a double figure angler fish & Derek caught a big conger with a hand spear (he did not use a speargun) We saw a net that was crammed with red mullet, wrasse & spider crabs.
I only had a shorty wetsuit at the time but I would still stay in for two hours, on that particular day, I mainly followed my brothers on the surface watching them dive down but I can remember Derek taking that conger like it was yesterday!
Of course in those days conger were everywhere & were a much loved eating fish for a lot of people. My mum would cook conger steaks in the oven with milk & onions... the whole house would stink for days!

Here's a question for someone.
Sitting at rousse stuffing my face with a beautiful cake and I can see a bloke down in the shallows with a rake! Any ideas what he would be doing? I practically grew up on the beach but can't seem to recall ever seeing someone doing this before. If I hadent just ridden my bike around the island I might of popped down for a chat.
Vis looks cracking in most places today, hope at least on of you guys has taken advantage and been in for a splash.

Yeah that seemed to be the best place around the boats there . I used to make a rake with my uncle by nailing 6 inch nails through a bit of wood to make the raking bits. . you can hear and feel the cockles as they hit the nails
Ah cheers Mr Shell. Do you get many down here?

That's a nice pic of your bro Dave and a cracking fish too! Tom really is Daves double.

A friend of mines dad was out by roque au nord today fishing and saw a 6ft porbeagle circling under his boat as he was pulling in fish, he said it was amazing to see.

Popped in yesterday to a little spot for a quick hour that turned into a couple of hours.
Loads and loads of small bass (min size) everywhere. All left as I was looking for a decent bass.
I saw three nice bass, one went under the gun so no shot, one was a long shot with loads of weed in between (missed) and the last one was a sitting duck that moved at the last minute.
Missed everything!
One of those days.
Lovely though and good to get some practice stalking in the shallows. Saw some large mullet at the end and have always ignored them, but this time I started looking for that tell tale golden spot - didn't see any but not sure how obvious it is as have never shot / seen a golden grey.
Good fun, good viz & seems to be flat calm & good conditions everywhere at the moment.
