Not in Castlegregory but I know a decent Bass spot just near Dingle if thats any good to you? can pm you the details if you fancy it.

I just spent 4 days in castleGregory vis wasn't great last week but should be massively improved now over the sand on the right for ray and flatfish . Up beyond the surfers beach in front of Spillanes there is a nice reef . And right at the very end is deep water for pollock. If ya wanna know exactly drop me a msg. In fota now just arrived . Found a new trigger spot too but it's near Kenmare.

Derek I met a guy in Kenmare who is on one of the angling sites and he said a guy recently caught one in Wicklow . So if you know somewhere that looks like the right habitat for them have a look. Anywhere round fota any good ? Found a great bass spot out west yesterday ain't got the pics you will put them up later.

I'm sure stranger things have been know to happen...there is a bit of talk about Black Bream being caught around Wicklow and Wexford of late. I haven't seen any myself, though I've recently seen Codling in an area that I've never seen them in before.

Thanks Neil. I chose a random spot. Saw one bass and settled for a mullet in the end. First video from the mounted gopro to follow.

Ha ha well done ! It's a combination of never having posted from my phone and Fota Islands hospitality ! How was the vis Johnny ? CastleGregory was my scariest experience underwater for a long time HUGE Stingray in shallow water and low vis never thought I would be afraid to pull the trigger on a fish that wasn't a conger in Irish water. Easily a meter across rising out of the sand in front of you in 1.5m depth .

Also seen two pipefish in CastleGregory amazing creatures I really need to get a camera you really have to watch for a long time to be sure it is one not just a piece of weed.

Had a lovely swim tonight with Arrowloopboy, even seen a few Bass. Some were small and just about legal size so I didn't take them and then I seen a lovely big Bass but I couldn't get to turn on him with all the bootlace weed wrapped around me...Arrow, on the other hand got a shot off at 12ft away from a 6.5lb Bass and put the spear right through his head, lovely shooting. I'll have to go out and redeem myself later this week... :)

Hi All,
long time I didn't read the forum
I have seen that you are starting to catch gilthead that's great
it is my favourite fish
Is end of october too late for spearfishing?

Cheers Derek, the new gun helps:inlove, that Jellyfish we saw was a lions maine !

I looked it up on Ecojel last night and you're right it was a Lions Mane, I'd seen one before and it had much longer tentacles...the one we seen had very stumpy tentacles, must have been in the wars :ko . There's a good pdf for Id'ing Jelly fish here: http://www.jellyfish.ie/downloads/IDCard.pdf

@Lulazz October is a bit late in the season though there is still some activity around, you will probably need a 7mm wetsuit if you want to stay in for any length of time. The weather is very unpredictable and with vis being quite low at times after storms it can be a bit hit and miss.

thanks for the info
what kind of fish could I find in late october in shallow water max 15mt?
I'll be staying in Carlow

have no problem with cold water (around 12 degree) or bad vis
in winter here the vis could be less than 1mt and water around 12, good for bass

This might give you some idea of what to look for as a very general guide but in my area the SE from late September onwards until April/May the Bass move off to deeper water.
