Ireland Spearing 2013

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
Think I was done last year around the 4th October after blanking 4 times in a row, very choppy and bad viz so gave up.
Although with the weather we have had this year you never know..

Lads I know the weekend are precious but if you have time tomorrow please try and get down to support this. The annual dolphin hunt starts on sept 1st in taji so get here if you can, and if you see a dolphinarium on your travels abroad throw a stone through its windows or register your disapproval in howsoever you see fit.

After a long day running around, selling a boat for my father, mowing the grass (until I ran out of petrol lol), I finally managed to get to the beach just after 7pm. The light was starting to go so I got in as quick as I could and seen very little other than wrasse and a dogfish for the first 20 minutes, then I started to see some mullet and then a couple of bass. My first shot was a bit of a flyer and I missed one around the 4lb mark, another few minutes later I spotted one moving slowly in the weed around 2m from the end of the spear and nailed him just behind the gill plate. I knew it was getting a bit dark and time to get out when I almost went head first in to a big rock :crutch .
He weighed in at just under 7lb...Bass for dinner tomorrow

Absolute cracker,well done.

Poped out first time in ages, maybe a few months.
Got in 2 hours after the sweet spot and shot one fish within 10mintes. I floated over him with the current and had a tough time firing back between my legs! Saw another another 5 minutes later but it was a kebab shot and I wasn't sure of the size when the fish was looking headon so I didnt take the shot.
It swam away and I saw it was actually a good size.
I swam for another 40 mintes but didnt see any bass... defo missed the boat there...

So I went looking for a few lobster. After about 10 minutes I spotted a beauty, but he was holes up pretty good! And I couldnt find his escape hole to do the old scare him from behind so he turns and grab his tail trick. Also I didnt have a torch so it was hard to make out the lay of the land... it was a very narrow little crack...

Well I spent a good hour with him and eventually I gave up. Marked his spot with an anchor and polyprop line. I'll be back soon....

Bit disappointed on two fronts 1) only one bass and 2) couldnt get a lobster.

I need a lot more practice and a lot less work

I was out myself early doors this morning as working night shift tonight so enough time for a and then a quick snooze this afternoon.

Tried a spot not to far from where you were Rob, normally suffers with viz here but today it was pretty good so paddled out on the kayak to the headland and swam back.

Got it bang on low tide so the was a good few Bass around, even saw a shoal of 6 or 7 all around 4 to 6lb.
In the end I got my two, one at 4lb and the other at just shy of 10lb , which I even went and bought some scales just to check the weight.

have pic's but having trouble uploading?

Nice fish there Bd...don't beat yourself up too much on only getting one, previous to my last catch I blanked 3 times. Twice when I actually had Bass to shoot at and missed them completely due to messing around with the sling tension on the new gun. I've also not even seen a lobster where I've been hunting...I must be looking in all the wrong holes (where have I heard that before rofl ).
I wouldn't mind finding a local pool that I could have to myself for an hour or two to play around with different settings and a fixed target at different ranges, I'm definitely going to join a pool for the winter months though, I find it takes me a few weeks to build the leg muscles back up again for long sessions after the winter pause.

Well done Chealy...love to see the pics.

Damn, was gonna send ya a message but truth be told I was too excited to have the place to myself...
When the kids go back to school its like a silence descends over the seafront
In and out and not a soul around
Planning a dip tomorrow again if you are about. I was planning to hit the same spot on the low and annihilate the lobster.... but I was very tempted to go for a few place aswell!
Am also looking to get a few night dives at the plaice spot

For photo's... I post to facebook, click on photo, press 'f5' to get smaller pic and right click in firefox and 'view image' to get the direct code to the image. I just pop that in here direct on the forums.

Derek, I garauntee you are swimming over millions of lobster... takes a while to get tuned into finding them, a good torch helps!

I found a guy in this hole 3 years ago. Then I tried to find the spot and couldnt until today... anchor dropped and positioned with landmarks. Hopefully, it will be a future lobster spot

I was really out of shape today allright, but I think the best conditioning is to continue swimming once per week throughout winter. Even if the viz is so bad you leave the gun behind. I didnt dive enough this winter and I am suffering for it this summer

I am on shift tonight 8 till 8 so will be to wrecked in the morning, was planning to head out again on Wednesday evening around 5:30 if your around.

Diving for Bass is not to good for the fitness that's for sure, have been diving some deeper spots lately and you start to notice the difference with your bottom times, way more interesting aswell.
Just ordered that batteries I need for my torch so should have them by the end of the week so will be up for some night dives before the weather kicks in, actually bought the torch last year and hav'nt used it yet.

In the link you posted, (I'll assume you use firefox) put the mouse over the image... right click... press 'view image' and then copy the text in the address bar.

Then press the little photo icon in the forum reply software and put that address bar text into the popup.

Heypresto...

Yep... viz is only ok at the minute with the wind, but on a night dive... should be good

Wed after 6 could be good if the conditions hold out!

PS... that shift sucks... howd you get landed with that?

updating my spearfishing results by somebody's request
last weekend went for a session to new place , more on current side of bay. all this catch between two of us . cod 7.5 and 5.5 kg , places biggest 3kg , smallest over a kilo looks loads , but everything goes in a freezer for a winters months .

That's a lovely cod Danas...the Plaice are a fine size too. Good eating on that, well done.

That's good shooting Danas,fair play,16.5lb Cod and a 6.6lb Plaice,great fish.

fab going Danas! living the dream

Poped out again today but the hole was empty the lobster was gone!

5 mins later I was on another hole, desperate to catch the little lobbie within.
But I kicked up a load of sediment and 10 mins later he shot out through it. After 3 mins looking I gave up and went off on a swim. I hadnt seen a bass so far so I strapped the gun to the kayak and decided to go for a snorkle... first time in about 4 years ;~)
after an hour I was coming home and I though I'd check the spot again and found him hiding in another crevice about 12inches off the sand... hole was so small I could only get my hand in unclenched. Spent a long time there but in the end decided to call it a day and head home and look for a new boat!

Ended up with a lovely flounder, 1 crab and one claw

There's some decent size Flounder around at the moment, actually got my first Plaice the other week but it was'nt very big.
