Hey guys. I went to Algarve for a week and brought my freediving gear. dive-wise, trip had its ups and downs. none of the commercial operators would touch me with a barge-pole, even though all the scuba sites are shallow as hell. info was non existent, so I just found places that looked ok and went for it. weather was not playing ball most times with high swells and on-shore winds. Once in the water, worries went away and I had a blast, seeing so many fish despite the seemingly barren sea floor. I stayed safe and well within my limits as I was on my own. still was doing one and a half minute dives on average, which for me is good. and they were very comfortable. Here is a little vid of my experiences. Enjoy.

Funny how the season ended in Cork at pretty much the same time last year:headwanted to try for a couple of lobster but guess it's just not meant to be.
I was down in Kerry last week and the viz looked good out on the end of the Dingle peninsula, I never dived but suppose if you were desperate.

Don't think its over craig... you just gotta pack your kit and leave it by the door. When an opportuinity comes up... take it.
You can still catch most fish till dec. then its scallops till march. then back to fish in april ;)

When I was a rod fisher,October used to be the most productive month of the year for big catches of Bass and Giltheads, yet, mates of mine that are fishing regularly can't catch a bass, very strange ??

Cork bois, in the Clarion this friday night for training at 7.30 if you have done a course with me or have a freedive qualification then your welcome cost is €20, then have a one day beginner course on the next day saturday at 9.30-5.00

Lads a heads up some gear was left behind in Mullaghmore a few weeks back, a speargun and fins and mask etc, the guy was just getting in to it and the gun was a present from his girlfriend if anyone hears of it please let me know. Guy landed home and realised he had left the gear on the bank drove straight back 20mins later and it was gone. Have asked locally.

I have my 7+7 farmer John's and jacket...should be good for an hour. Actually, the water is still relatively warm, bouy M5 is giving 12.5c....positively balmy :)

Got to dive site and there was still Ice around but how could you not feel the pull of the water with this view?
Was planning on tearing into plaice after a few dustbin lids were caught locally.

Hoped in and the plan was to swim around a nearby headland to sand... but when I got to the headland there was a little surf... only surf for miles (due to conditions) and the place was wall to wall mullet! And big mullet too!!

I dared to hope that there may be one or two bass in with them, but I couldn't find any. It was a decent shoal of about 25 mullet and I wondered if I'd see that shoal again. Almost immediately Clare shouted from about 100m away in deeper water and was waving frantically calling me over. As I swam to her I realised this was not going to be a normal day, as I was swimming through a nonstop wall of fish... never seen anything like it... literally hundreds or thousands of mullet from tiny size to massive! when I got to her she said there are lots of silver fish under her, I said come this way and she was blown away by the fish.

It got a little wild in the surf but as I was floating motionless at the entrance to one gulley watching the fish zipping a big mullet started to swim for me. I could see his wide mouth but then from behind I saw another silver fish, but this time with a smaller puckered mouth. I tried miserably to raise the gun quick enough and take a shot but it was rushed and I missed a nice 6+lb bass.

I was sure now there were bass so I kept going. as i moved to the other side of the headland I started seeing more and more, till I got to the complete opposite side and saw shoals of bass with only a few mullet in them. They were zooming so fast it was almost impossible to track them and they kept moving away from you so you had to keep moving which made it had to get close to shoot.
Also you'd spot a decent fish but not take the shot as you wait for bigger only to see smaller and not be able to find the bigger again :) great fun :)

Anyway, managed to get a smaller one of just under 4lbs but it was a bad shot.... hard to shoot these feckers.

I decided to try and dive and shoot. After a few dives one decent sized fish came in, I waited point blank..... and fired.... but the fish swam away///WTF!!! the spear was gone, must have snapped off the line... as the viz was great (bout 10m and more in places) I just went and picked it up.

Swapped over to the rob allen 90 but it was just a bit too heavy and big to track a shoal. The missus had been out for a while at that stage so I headed in.

Never made it to the plaice spot... but no doubt I'll be doing a bit more diving over the next few days :)

And.... maybe nights ;) :) :)

Here is my effort
