Just got word that the first day comp has been postponed for 24 hours due to the bottom plate being broken.
Just spoke to my girlfriend in Hurghada who was supposed to dive today and she confirms that the 1st day of comp has been postponed and maybe the second day will be postponed too.
The bottom plate broke for some reason (camera mess up or something) and the whole thing is a no - go :rcard . I am sure these things were properly tested before such a serious event
At least now everybody down there is laughing about this mess up for a competition and spirits are turning from serious competitive to Benny's lets have a holiday...
Unfortunately my worst fears about this thing are coming true and I am really sorry for the athletes down there.
I also got the information that an Italian girl got a black out at 20+ meters because the rope was set at 65m when she had asked for 55m... she was rescued by a team member acting as safety because there are no competition safety freedivers from the organisers on official training days...
I am sorry but this thing is past the point of being a badly organised joke...

PS. I am seriously pissed off with these guys now...
they had the same problem getting the rope measured correctly at the WC last year in Nice. I think it has something to do with the rope stretching in the water with an attached counterweight system. Although in that competition, they were out by a couple of metres and that was for the women's event only. It had been solved in time for the men's comp.

Dear Tbird...rope stretching due to weight is something AIDA has learned to correct for years ago - you wet the rope stretch it and measure it applying the same weight as the bottom weight you are going to use. If this isn't done properly it might cause the rope to be off by a couple of meters...If a rope is off by 10m at a length of 55m it means that the people preparing the rope: 1) do not know what they are doing 2) do not have any contact with current freediving practices 3) Do not realise/care that people's lives are at risk if they do not do their jobs properly.

Stavros. Yes you couldn't be more correct. I would go further and say that these competitions should be hosted by organisations that have done it before with success like CIPA in Nice or Massiliasub (coupe des Calanques) in Marseille or you guys in Greece who organise the Hellas Open every year. If the organisation can prove itself on a local scale then it is more likely to be able to handle a WC.

I repeat, these are just sums from the ANNOUNCED depths, not the actual results. Competition start was postponed till tomorrow. It seems it was not clever from me to put it here like this...

9.03 WOW, way to go herbert!! i remember 10 years ago when i was doing my divemaster course, chances of survival after 6 minutes was very slim, and 10 minutes is impossible, i think will (cant remember the last name, british guy)hit the 10 minute mark last year, thats defying science! way to go.

Just shaking shoulders definitely wont make things any better!
It's bout bloody time for the Head Staff down there to take command and start getting organized if you ask me.
In me world of free diving ......safety/security issues allways comes 1th , ......and not being able to measure ropes? I mean how hard can it be to inform the crew about the importance of measuring the ropes correctly in order to guarantee safety for the athlete's?

Hello from Egypt....
24 hour delay - after a 2 hour delay. I was on the beach ready to go out with Mark Harris as his coach, the other Brit boys were in the water warming up when they were told it was cancelled - something to do with the bottom plate collapsing and it seems, numerous other technical problems (but nothing to do with rope measuring!)
The whole thing is clearly very last minute and cancelling today was a good move - the guys have just got back from the barge and are saying everything should be in place for tomorrow so we'll try again.
Athletes are starting to get used to it all and dealing with it in their own ways... we've just done a half hour NLP session with the UK Team to calm them all down and everyone is now looking smiley again.
All the UK guys dive tomorrow - Mark Harris, Tim Money and Dave Morgan
UK Girls- Anne-Marie Kitchen-Wheeler and Liv Philip dive on Friday, Hannah Stacey dives on Saturday. I managed to perf my eardrum on the first day's training and so didn't hit my targets and am now being alternate/NLP counsellor/coach/sunbather.... Mr Crocs has just done his judge course...
weather is gorgeous, conditions are perfect... hopefully we will get to do some dives soon
