Need help. Building a gun.

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
This is some more progress. Now I'll be sanding it down to perfection and get rid of the block look from the back. Some tinkering to get my hands feel more comfortable and better grip.

Wow :) if the handle is any indication of your determination it's gunna be a cracker of a gun :). Looks good I reckon.

Im actually surprised with myself. Ive never worked with wood in my life and ive managed to make a half decent handle with only carving tools on my first try. Ill post some pics later on when I sand it down.

Thanks for your kind words mate, appreciate it!

Looking good. Do you wear gloves when you dive? Make sure you try it for size with your gloves on, you don't want to cramp your fingers.
Keep up the good work.

Almost there! Only a little refinements and sanding to do

Looks fantastic, would you consider gluing a 15mm contrasting, decretive piece of wood on the bottom?

Thanks. Actually, ill be placing a flat inox/stainless plate at the bottom. I tend to use my handle to tap on rocks to attract certain fish, and that would destory the wood

Great job lawstraljan!
You could glue a swivel with a ring to attach your float line to, into the handle - it's nice and interfere less if you have the float line attached to the handle... You can also tap with that :)
Just a suggestion...

Body glued. Hopefully glued well haha. Looks bulky but most of it will be gone after the forming. 9cm rear end 5cm muzzle end

Has anyone ever worked with graphite? I was thinking of using graphite for the rail guide and also for the rollertabs underneath the gun. Thoughts? And type of resin to use for this?

A few years ago graphite powder & epoxy mix was a standard way to construct a enclosed track.
Basically the method was to cut out an oversized track & pour in the graphite epoxy mix until full & then cut out the track out with a router.
The problems arising are... finding right size ball end router bit, & making that bit sacrificial as graphite will destroy tools in micro seconds!
In most cases you will have build a jig to cut the track unless you are building a square block American design gun in which case the track can be cut once the blank is squared up.
I guess it is a bit like building your own trigger unit... why would you do that when you can buy a perfectly good one.
The hard plastic self lubricating dove tail enclosed tracks available are really good & easy to fit, so if you want an enclosed track I would buy one. If you opt for an open track then they are very simple to cut & you can coat them with a graphite mix if you so wish.

I wont be doing an enclosed track, just deeper than the normal track guide, something like 2-3mm deep. Suggestions would be appreciated :)

The best performance tracks are shallow as the spear moves over a thin layer of water & has little contact with the actual track, so it is debatable if the track material in very important.
Anyway the same applies to building a graphite lined track... you cut a deep track, fill it with the mix & recut the track size you want.
It will be much easier to cut the track & coat with clear epoxy but graphite does sound really cool.

You make a good point. Ill just make a normal track then just in graphite as it'll give the gun a little more eye candy hehe.

Any idea what kind of graphite I might need? Resin type? Dry graphite, fine etc? Never worked with it so no idea which is better for a gun. Ive looked online but cant seem to find anything useful

I have no experience with graphite, but I would choose a very fine powder - this has the biggest surface.

Mix it with the epoxy resin you have used for gluing the laminate - you have to try with some different scales of mixture, so you can see how it works, how thick the mixture gets and how easy it can be applied.

Epoxy can take a lot of dry ingredients before it fails - up to 70% in volume - I think...
