North Wales, The Llyn and Anglesey 2016

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
What this thread needs is some proper fish :ROFLMAO: Hitting the Llyn tomorrow for some deep bass hunting off the Lintel - I'm feeling pretty confident it's going to be a good day.

Diving did not disappoint - the bass were not there in numbers but they were there in size - only 7 spotted in total, weirdly enough, I don't think we saw one under 6lbs which was pretty crazy for North Wales. One huge one came in right at the end of a breath hold as I was just about to head to the surface - I don't know how big it was but it was big, really big - way bigger than anything I've seen before - long and very pale silver, not like the others I'd seen that day which were dark and thick-set - it was left to swim another day - magnificent creature. Not many mullet about at all, would have expected a lot more. I've heard chatter around the fishing forums that the mullet haven't been showing well this year.

Was surrounded by a big school of garfish while breathing up, some of which took it upon themselves to bump my gun / spear - one came back about 4 or 5 times - I've seen mullet and bass rubbing themselves on the sand, I presume to remove parasites etc - maybe the gars were doing the same? I quite like the taste of garfish but was more than happy just to watch them, they stayed with me for a minute or more which was pretty special.

Came across some huge Echinus esculentus - the big, pink sea urchins about the size of grapefruit - at depth - had never really had a chance to see them up close before - really cool.

Two big bass

Great haul Ian! Can't wait to do it again.
All the best,
Duncan.

Good report but those photos look awful!

Agreed.

Hopefully Ian may post a full report of his recent adventures without any photoshopped pics.

.......... Enjoy that One Air Ian :)

Yeah, they are not the best but to be honest, they showed very clearly the exact place we were fishing - my interest in giving away the location of a hard won spot just so you can have a pretty background to look at is pretty minimal.

I'm just trying to add a half decent bit of content to the forum - not win a National Geographic prize :ROFLMAO:

Going to have to give that a go, there's a fair amount of meat there on a decent bass

Way more meat than expected - you need to have a good ferret around - the muscles that move the mouth and eyes was some of the best as well as the collar section, which I think was my favourite.

Make sure you eat your heads warm, don't let them go cold otherwise the set pretty tough - the quantity of gelatin that is released when they're cooked is crazy - once it's cold, it sets like glue! Found that out the hard way.

For reference, I cooked mine at 170 for 45 minutes in a glass dish with about a cup of water in the bottom, drizzled with lemon juice, olive oil and garlic powder, covered with brown paper to stop it drying - turned out great, definitely worth it!

You might have just put me off LOL
Thanks for the advice, can always go down the chippy if it doesn't work out

great fish! Been down pembroke this weekend big spiders and pollock but no Bass. Hows the vis on the lyn? I have a day off so was thinking about a trip tomorrow. SCYC cam off line so need a viz check.

Saw a spearo entering/exiting Porth Dafarch on west coast of Anglesey yesterday afternoon, they had a big dive hunter type float. Was it anyone on here? Conditions looked pretty savage really, bet there wasn't much viz.

All very quiet on this forum the wave and wind gods are not being kind. Desperate to get in during what I think is the best time of year but it's not been worth the drive yet...
