not sure about the lleyn getting the fish first. I always think they will be heading to their spawning grounds first. I remember reading a book saying the males will lie in wait for the females to arrive. I base my spots on that this early in the season, but to be honest no real proof of this.

that's a v good point .when bass have reproduction on there minds I would think most other things go out the window .theres a cracking video on the Ireland page where the bass I think are chasing females just waiting to cover her when she decides too lay her eggs if they do it like salmon .where do bass reproduce ?gravel ,sea grass ,kelp beds ,rocks sandy beeches .they are only coming back here to reproduce ?arent they?Think may is the month ! All so when the spider crabs arrive are they eating the fish eggs ?The video is good he's very close to a lot of bass which would normally be gone in an instant ,but they appear to be following a female possibly ?I will think about this and may change my choice of spots to try.

You tube "sea bass underwater.footage 2007 "by underwaterireland and "snorkeling in seabass kingdom .Watch in HD" Can't find it on the Ireland thread for some reason.

Hi All,

Been lurking for a while on the forum, sort of a time thing to actually do some spearfishing. Got all the kit and had a few successful trips out down south in Cornwall when visiting friends but nothing up here in North Wales. I live in Llysfaen, near Colwyn Bay.

Anyway, be really keen to meet up with anyone willing to take me out and impart some knowledge of local sites especially tides etc. Not looking for anyone to share knowledge of their best spots but just looking for some company! Feel free to pm me or message on here!

Evening all. Extremely productive scallop run today, they were everywhere. Thanks to Dylan for company and boat. Viz on s, not great, about 2m but fine for task. Tried your fave spot for park, wall and fish ian, but viz not great and not a fish to be seen. temperature out at sea wasnt at all bad in 7mm, could have kept going for ages but no need, got enough for the two of us v quickly. Temp ro und the corner fine on the body, but fresh water ingress felt like needles in the forehead..... And no fish, well, what can you do.... Even checked for your lobster at the end of the slip, ian, but he wasnt there, prob off on holidays skiing or something. That said, great day and brought it all back after some tips from Dyl.
New Guy,feel free to PM or get in touch with some of the guys on here. To be honest, theres no real secrets, if you can walk in and the car isnt too far, theres a good chance you will get lucky but happy to meet up if im down at the same time. spoke to some anglers btw, they had two bass and a 'pinky' last week (A good indicator I would have thought) but nothing at all this week, so suspect all were 'randoms' rather than any true 'early shows'. Good luck to all, wont be down for a couple of weeks but now ive started... GAME ON!

Well done foxy n dyllun the crazy scallop man like to see you pair in that little rib a least it was flat? Shame about the vis its like that on lows you get all the dregs so to speak on high it would probably be much better .Will try and get dyllun out in my little boat next weekend .get the sun cream out !.............um.....yer......LOL...........o I I looked up bass spawning breeding they supposedly meet in the channel do the biz then eggs fry drift swim to nursery grounds to grow up then come and go as they get bigger .Think that's why sea grass /bay/ river mouths are so important and should be protected .What do you lot think?.

I think they must spawn upstream in the estuary shallows/creeks marshes. Seeing as they can tolerate very brackish water, I think (again from the same book) as low as 5-10% salt. I can't imagine the spawn drifting up river, and this provides a reason for their ability to tolerate brackish water.
Makes sense that they wait in the channels for the females to arrive, ha in my mind anyway.

All these theories didn't help me last night got in at S4. Drift dived down the rocks. Lasted less than an hour, I was losing feeling in my hands and struggling to hold the gun. Saw velvets, very small fry bass/mullet, then one 1/4lb mullet in the shallows as I returned on they other side of the rocks. It all felt very fishy but nothing about, vis 3-4 in places.

After another google search male bass make a nest in gritty /sandy sea bed then gets a female to lay eggs in it then he fertilisers them in shallow water in river esturerys river mouths bay's etc !who knows .but I do know I won't be getting in this weekend as planed the quack has just signed me off for a week with a virus.with blood test for possible glandular fever !@#%*#!*

Nice view of the gravel bar at SX (will omit the spot code) - I remember getting really excited when I saw I it from the shore, swam out expecting a lovely shallow reef jammed with mullet and bass only to find a featureless lump of gravel under 1 foot of water - disappointing in the extreme rofl

Would love to know how many boats have hit it - really surprised that it's not marked.

As for the gill net... I couldn't advise ripping it up and burning it, as this is a public forum but... well... there have been worse ideas.

Very slow start to the year for me as I am completely jammed with work, have hardly left my desk since January, no joke, am working right now - have had 3 days off including weekends so far this year. Managed to use one of them to head to the coast with Daf and pillage the rare Macollock breeding grounds of the North of the Llyn - came away with a haul and a half of scallops which should last me a fair while.

Hopefully going to get down in about a month so will be playing armchair spearo until then.
