Project "Carbon strongback gun"

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
Well looks like the gun is coming back home!
My mate who lives Thailand came over to visit last summer & took the gun back with him but he used a spring steel spear that has apparently welded itself into the trigger mechanism!!
He left it stored with the spear in place & it seems to have rusted solid??
Anyway he is back this weekend so we will see how the gun looks after 6 months in the tropics!

Sounds like it was put away wet and left to sit. Time for a little 3+1 oil along with him buying you a pint.

Cheers, Don

I will try to get some decent pics up tomorrow but the MK2 gun is getting near completion!

man that is a wicked looking gun.
is that two 16mm rubbers? would have plenty of punch I'm guessing.
fantastic work. inspiration plus!
Is there any way of getting a high gloss finish on CF? am sort of considering an attempt at something in carbon. Bit wary of the skills needed to work with it.

Thanks guys, it is a big gun - 1.3mt.
In fact if the truth be known this gun has already been featured early on in the thread!
It was the first carbon strongback to come out of my mold & is the gun featured right up to post 29# but I messed up the cedar by getting black epoxy pigment over it, the dye sunk in so deep I couldn't sand it out so the gun went to the back of the shed & I started over!!! :head

So I decided to cover the gun in carbon & fit a neptonic tuna mech, with a 300mm forward trigger & handle.
I have put the gun together for my friend jonny (jonny 250) in exchange for some specialist work he has done me. :)

I have a few details to finish like balancing the gun, I actually need 70 grams of lead near the muzzle & a 20x30mm block of polystyrene near the butt.
Also trying to find a s/s spring to reset the line release.
i have fitted two 16mm bands for the time being but if jonny ever goes tuna huting there is scope for 3 x 20mm.

sweeeet :)

I just need to figure out if porgies are fair game...? Bit of chum... :):martial
Dinner for a year :)
Maybe I could call it my Irish bass gun, with enough range to shoot irish bass from guernsey waters... rofl
Seriously it will be good to have an option for those clear water days...

Just let me know when you need some more done on your project mart...

another bueatiful gun Mr Fox, how did you get the hand laid CF to shine like that?

right on Foxfish, that thing is one of a kind! I like how you reversed the pivot point for the remote trigger. Have you tried that before? Any reason other than trying something new?

Just to be different mate - I like to make the guns as unique as possible without being too outrageous or impractical :)
In fact I have another gun with a remote trigger that is just about finished, I am just using a ball end on the end of the trigger link pin.

Well a little feedback about this canon!

Bear in mind that I haven't used a 'real' gun like this before....

My initial reaction as I was walking down to the beach was kind of 'oh no' as it's huge and pretty jolly heavy! I was really unsure whether it would be even useable.
However, as soon as I got it in the water and the weight issue went, it became a whole new concept :)
The balance is (of course) very good, well done mart! And the forward trigger means that it feels like a long, but not mad long, gun, which is really quite manoeuvrable.
With just a single band it took me a bit of getting used to the lack of recoil and everything seemed to happen slowly. Another band will sort that out!!
Loading it is easier than loading my 90, just off the hip instead of off the chest.
I took 2 fish, both long shots by my standard.
All in all a super gun that works very well! A good addition to the armoury :)
Thanks foxfish!
