Sharm Individual World Champs - Info & Updates

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
Well since you're down there Jome, if you happen to see a bald Egyptian/armenian diver with an omer camo spearfishing wetsuit..(you cant miss him), tell him hi for me, thats Ashod Papazian the egyptian freediving champ and that omer wetsuit is actually MINE (but thats a whole other funny story)

That is so funny you should mention that. Ashod is sitting right next to me! I read this message and there's a bunch of swedes, finns and danes around and one "bald guy", so I ask him "are you Ashod by any chance" and he is. Sheesh!

Anyway, he sends his regards but told me to tell you he's not using your suit because the water is 28 degrees warm

The wind is currently 14 knots and not really slowing down it seems. And tomorrow is supposed to be even stronger wind.

Have to say the sea is not at it's most tempting right now

Great updates Simo, Dave, Stavros et al. Sorry to hear the weather is closing in a bit but it is a competition which is best on the day, and if anything it'll bring a bit more uncertainty and excitement into the results.

Being here at work and not there is driving me completely nuts, though work = money = trips away freediving/ trips to appease the wife. Still doesn't make it fair though. Half of the fun of these comps is socialising with everyone. And yes the Fins left an impression on me too - great bunch of lads.

Looking forward to hearing of Natalia's dive this afternoon, if it is successful then that's a huge jump in the WR. And let's face it, she hasn't been lazy this year!

Cheers,
Ben

Aye, keep information flow up! Great stuff!
I'm here, though not at work at least, just longing to be there and mingle.. :inlove
I will go diving tomorrow, but it will be closer to 28°F than to 28°C :t

Best wishes to everyone down there!!!

Sanso

P.S.: BennyB, how about we found the Freediving Expats in Europe Society?

Hya - another update from the front.

As you heard the weather is bad (really) - we are talking 1m waves here and is does not seem to have any intention of dying down...

Women's CWT is supposed to start at 13:00 (not 13:15) but there has been no improvement in the weather so it is not unlikely that the event will be postponed for tomorrow - in that case it will be women and men diving together (this is going to be really crowded with 105 athletes diving)

On of the main problems with the waves (which jome did not encounter) is that as the competition lines are supported on floating platforms the lines are flying up and down by as much as 2m ... this means that the (stainless steel) bottom plates are flying up and down by as much as 2m with the lines and there have been training dives where the plate "attacked the diver" (I think lotta got hit by the plate a couple of days ago)

So all in all it looks ... a lot of nervous women walking around or stretching in their rooms and a constant annoying wind .

I am off to see if the womens CWT will go ahead or get postponed - I'll try and get you the info later on

Cheers Stavros

We'll try to put the results online in almost real time in here
http://jome.homelinux.net/results/index.php?op=divers&event_id=186

But please don't refresh it every second, because the server is really really crappy (it's just an old pc on my living room behind an adsl connection) and we cannot access it for updates if it is all clogged up. Refreshing the page every few minutes should be ok.

The plan is that Timo will supervise from the shore where he can get a good connection going and I will be in the water hand signalling the results to him Let's see how it goes.

Of course all the results will be preliminary, not official. So you can see white, red, yellow, but we'll have no idea how many points the penalty was etc so by default we put -1 penalty for a yellow card and update it later.

It might also happen that the connection here totally dies, so be patient

Competition cancelled for today

Well I have to agree that the waves are a bit rough. Hopefully better tomorrow!

ahhh, i was getting already glued to the chair waiting for the first day of comp. it will have to wait till tomorrow, double the fun, double the excitement! Thanks, Jome for all the updates.

Bugger! Oh well, safety first. Glad the organisers are putting that as a priority. In big comps there's always pressure to get the dives done even if conditions are a bit dodgy.

There is word going around that one of the competition lines has somehow got cut.

The judges and organizer are now working very hard on getting new ropes, but of course there is all the stretching and measuring etc that need to be re-done. Sure don't envy them right now. Hope they find a good rope though...

This is all hearsay and rumors though - waiting for the official word.

good stuff, i wont put all this in the news as we must just stick to facts and not speculation of what may have happened. i;ll put in that there is a delay. pray for no wind!

cheers

Well hardly a scandal. By the way, sea is now (at 17 pm) completely calm and a lot of people have gone out to train. Very tricky weather...

On a brighter note, peole say there was a big swordfish (or some such similar fish) swimming close to the competition area today. Damn I would've liked to have seen that.
