South Devon 2013

As Matt (Spiderman) said, we hit the devon coast last night to a spot that is new to me. Despite the cold (7-8 degrees on the D4) we spent a couple of hours in lovely terrain that I guess in warmer water will be alive with fish but sadly only very small pollock were seen. I picked up a couple of just legal edible crabs but decided to put them back to live another day. Roll on the warmer weather!!!

My friend Jan had some good fish there too! How deep is it?

Myself and Alix went for a dive in the sunshine yesterday afternoon. The water was a lot warmer than it has been, and the viz was around 7m. We swam around for a couple of hours, on the lookout for tasty things, but saw very little. We were just about to swim back in when a large head appeared next to us. That explained the lack of fish! The next 15 minutes were spent playing hide and seek in amongst the kelp with a large bull seal. He was much better at it than we were, putting on a great display of underwater acrobatics, and reminding us, despite what we think, that we are really just chimps in rubber suits.

Hi All

Sorry in advance if you see this posted on various threads.

I have not been diving in the UK for a while but want to get back into the water in the UK and I have a few days off work from 17th of May to 23rd and was looking to do some spearfishing on the South coast (poss Dorset or Cornwall). I used to be in the LIC and have just rejoined. I would like to be diving with a buddy. I have wheels and a 3.2m inflatable that should plane well (It's new so I am hoping) with a 10hp on the back so don't mind driving to wherever if the diving is worth it. I am reasonably competent and like bass so if anyone has some spare time during the above dates and wants to go hunting then please let me know.

Thanks

Thurlestone dive this afternoon, rewarded with great vis of 5+ meters, water really clear. Only fish seen were wrasse and small pollock, but these were a welcome site after a good few dives with no life at all seen. Was able to take a good look around the Louis Shied while out taking advantage of good vis and no scuba types. Very calm water, verging on still.
On way back to shore saw a couple of small groups of bait fish which was encouraging but I was starting to get cold after a couple of hours and had to come out.
Hope some of you are able to enjoy similar conditions.:D

Hey all just popped in to see how things are a bit further down the coast sounds like your having better vis than us here in Dorset. Anyone happen to have ventured further up the coast and know what vis is like in the Sidmouth/Branscombe area? Dive safe

I haven't looked but given recent wind and swell direction and knowledge of that area I can pretty much predict vis in the 0-1m range.

Went in after work last night in the water 23:30 - 02:00 South hams. Water felt ok with 3mm gloves & socks. Took 1 bass nothing huge but did spear big mullet around 6lb mark. No photos as already filleted on return home. Small bait fish & a few small flatties, was hoping for a couple of flatties to come my way but sadly no. I did have a nice sea trout around the 4 lb mark swim with me for a couple of minutes, but taste buds were kicking in so I quickly scared him off!!!
Last thing sorry to the couple in the back of your car, think I spoilt the moment. Should have checked your national trust car pass as your window was down!!
Second thoughts best not!!

Crossed the border today- and went to Looe very nice conditions ,sunny with good vis ,5 metres, covered a lot of ground with kayak , diving at several locations , nice topography underwater , very few fish seen , none taken ! No sign of spider crabs yet though ? New suit ( cressi tracina ) was plenty warm enough and comfy , I rather like the high waist trousers , never had them before . Terry....

I got in Saturday afternoon near to Rame Head. Lots of Pollack. I saw a lone Mackerel and picked up a brown crab but released it again. I got cold quickly but nice to get in.
