South Devon 2013

I was in the tackle shope earlier and thought the chap was taking the piss at first but apparently not. 340lb yellowfin i think caught in a gill net off babbacombe somewhere or at least that's what he told me. I've been online and there is a photo by a chap I know who works in the fish market. Said to be worth around £2K!

There is a bit more info on this link: Must be heating up ! | SouthDevonFishing

There is another chap claiming to have caught one of 150lb but I don't know if its a piss take...

Has anyone been in in Torbay over the weekend? After a viz report.

I was fishing (rod & line ) Hopes Nose , plenty of Mackerel about ,good size as well !! not 340lb though !!!! vis looked pretty good by torbay standards 3 metres perhaps ,but water much calmer at Meadfoot and vis looked pretty good at high tide , very quiet though ,no boats ,people, cars and probably no fish either !!

Nope... But they'll all be in next weekend... with 120's and slip tips.

rumour has it that scottwilson is already out in the bay dressed up in tinsel and tin foil trying to attract as many baitfish as humanly possible.

Not that any of us would want to shoot a tuna that is. After last years uproar ! Dead fish pictures on a spearfishing forum... Disgusting

Nothing seen mate not even a cuttlefish which is what I was after. North westerly winds all week which is great for that area. Torbay is always a bit slow to get going just waiting for the bass to turn up now. Im suprized u didnt take the kayak out to the nose and fish flat rock

Scott, cuttlefish are around our way and the bloom.
Just lacking the bass. Give it time.

A good 4m vis in Torbay today. 10 degrees now at last but still no silver fish. Saw a cuttle but it was stuck in a gill net so I did the sporting thing and freed it rather than spearing it.

Good vis last night in the south hams ~ 4m

lots seen inlcuding this years first bass, although out of range and skittish.

Other highlights were several cuttlefish, loads of pollack, spider crabs and single flounder.

Only fish taken was the flounder.

Good to see the small fry and sandeels in large numbers, wont be long until the bass are on the hunt again!

Out of curiosity , what kinda shark is that? If it is a shark. It looks pretty big too.

Gotta be a basking shark really, looks a good 10-12 ft. There was one that size just off the beach in exmouth last year scaring people lol

Does anyone know if the Spiders are in yet? Read a couple of posts mentioning a few, I'm guessing the south coast is not carpeted with them quite yet?

I'm hoping to get in on Sat or Sun, prob at Budleigh, but wind is high until early Sat morning, any one got any idea if it will be clearish on Sun perhaps? Trying to work out if its worth bringing the gun down for the weekend.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated, used to be local but been living away for a while, so forgetting when is good to go! Couple of spiders would keep me happy though

K, so is just a big fella going slowly around eating plancton? :)

Yea their totally harmless filter feeders, second biggest fish in the sea though so they are an impressive sight. One of the Cornish spearo's (Padaxes I think) posted a really cool video of himself swimming with one or two of them last year, and another swimming with a very friendly seal. Worth a look if you can find them

Nice 2 hour dive, much more life around but no silvers. Came away with a cuttlefish, my first so also had my first messy experience of preparing it. Different but worth it. Generally good vis, good 3-4 meters but a little milky in parts.
Had quick chat with 2 others spearos after who had dived shag rock, hi if you're reading this.:D

Had a couple of hours in at meadfoot yesterday at high water where the vis has cleared quite a bit since last week. Still a bit of bloom in the water though but also loads of baitfish around. One bass seen while I was in the shallows but couldn't get a shot off as I was wallowing in the wash of a boat once I had settled down he was off. Don't think I have ever seen so many dogfish. Nice to get in though but jacket spuds for tea again.
