Hi All

I am heading down to Dartmouth this Friday for a long weekend. Any suggestions of good places to go spearing (I have an inflatable with me so can get along the coast a little)?
Cheers
Nick

Hi Nick
If you can get along the coast a little I hear Dorset is good!!!!!

Failing that, exit the mouth of the Dart a take a right (West). You will see a large rocky outcrop separated from the land after a short while. I have not dived the ground myself but the pictures on the 3D sounder looked amazing. Troughs, weed, drop offs, cracks and mixed fish shoals were all showing.

Good luck

The further you can get from the mouth of the river the better the viz will generally be. There is a big alge bloom here at the moment, so all areas are pretty poor at the moment.
You can go left to the Shag Stone, and a little further out to Eastern Black Rock for a bit deeper diving. Left will take you to Inner Coombe Rocks.

I love Dorset and used to spend all my spare time in Portland but was hoping the water might be a bit warmer and the Bass a bit more plentiful further West.
Will take a look at those rocks if I can, looks great from google earth.

Thanks for the advice,
As long as the water is flat enough it should all be possible with my little inflatable so I can have some fun exploring. Sounds like the only problem is the bloom. How long does it normally last?

Hi All

Just back from the briny and I can report that the viz is ... Ridiculous! For a moment today I thought I'd lost my hand as I couldn't see it in front of my face! Shocking and then an East swell rocked up! Good for the lungs though. Surfed in on my dive hunter.

Two hoods was a good trick but blindly has it rubbed my neck raw. Good sinuses though. Scissors to it and modify me thinks!!!

Not sure where you can launch and park in Dartmouth ? If your boat is easy to carry then try Kingswear marina, other than that there is no where else for quite a way in either direction !! Terry....

Hi
That's an easy one, we are going to drop it in at Dart marina then we can leave it in the water overnight.
If the bloom is still going to be so bad at the weekend though, I will leave the guns and take rods instead!!

The vis in dartmouth is zero at the moment mate very brown. I was at the castle over the weekend and it was the colour of chocolate.

Took the kayak out to thatchers rock today after work and the viz is around 3 meter with patches of bloom. Zero fish caught but always vood to be out on the yak

Scott,
Do you reckon its worth my while going for a dive in Torbay tomorrow evening from a vis point of view?
Cheers,
Dave.

Hi dave. I launched from the middle steps at meadfoot there was zero vis close in but it did clear up the further out i went So I would say go for it. Bear in mind we have massive tides at the moment which tends to hinder the viz a bit on low.

Im back down there tomorrow around 4pm so can give you a vis update if thats any good

Yes, that would be great thanks. Am not likely to be able to get in the water until about 8, so a heads up beforehand would be appreciated. I'll PM my mobile if you don't mind sending a text?

Will do Dave txt will be easier for me aswell. Northerlies for the rest of the week so that area should improve

Just got out from a dip at meadfoot where the vis is about two metres at best near the surface but on the bottom nearer a metre. Thick with bloom. No fish seen other than a shoal of sand eels. I went in an hour after high water. If you do venture in I wish you better luck than I had.

Thanks Coastie for the grim update.
We are heading down to Dartmouth early tomorrow, don't suppose there is much chance that the bloom with miraculously disappear overnight!
Oh well, looks like I will buy some rag worms on the way down.

Snap!! Didn't find much more vis but came down upon 3 fish in close proximity but couldn't identify due to conditions, wouldn't have been takers size wise anyway.

Scott, thanks for info earlier. Bloom a bit too strong at mo, could have spent more time hunting for better vis but got in water later than expected and ran out of time.

Cheers.

Scott and I took the kayaks out of Meadfoot this afternoon. No fish seen, but then Scott taunted me by saying he had found a scallop. Turned out he was joking as it was empty, so I got my own back by finding three nice big scallops in one dive, and poor Scott went home hungry.
Very poor viz with the bloom, but the wind was warm and the sea is heating up nicely.

Good to meet you last weekend. What depth did you get the scallops?
Dave.

At least my kayak didnt fall off that cheap arse trolley of yours lol couldnt help but laugh as I watched you struggle even that cop car had a chuckle as they drove past rofl

Hopefully my sinuses will clear for the weekend and will actualy make it to the bottom more than once......

Dave the scallops were shallow maybe 4 meters

Thanks for the vis info I was planning on an early tomorrow ! probably go on a kayak exploration out of Dartmouth instead now . Terry....
