Terry I had 3 meters on hightide today in the bay. Dived spots from meadfoot to hopesnose. Plenty bait fish about and bloom but far better than yesterday.

Has anyone dived thurleston recently?

Has anyone dived thurleston recently?

Not that its much use now, but dived Thurlestone last Sat eve. Vis effected by bloom but got a couple of milky meters mostly. Nothing in the way of fish seen, seemed to be followed the entire dive by a solitary small pollock. Everytime I dived down and started to look around the only thing I saw was 1 small pollock seemingly every time. And a dogfish.

Poor little bugger was probably trying to work out what hell this thing was swimming around his reef. Plenty of northerly winds since last saturday so I reckon worth a go in the nect couple days. Cherrs for that Dave

Anyone able to offer a vis report for today? May get in early evening if there's a hope of seeing anything. Ideally Thurlestone / Plymouth areas.
Cheers.

Went out on kayak today from Dartmouth towards Blackpool sands , vis was dreadful , 1 metre ,maybe a little more ,shame as it has potential around here , bloody plankton !!!! Terry ....

You've helped me make my mind up...I'll give it a miss. Shame as painting walls will be the evening I've got ahead of me now!! Thanks for the update.

Dave.

Dai you did the right thing I went in this evening after work in Torbay and it was like swimming in porridge. Managed to get a cuttlefish out of it so not a complete waste of time. Vis on the bottom was down to 1 m. Still good to get in the water though.

Well I took the Paddleboard out at Budleigh as the sea was flat calm. Initial foray out had hideous vis near shore but got better and better as i went out further to an easy 4m out by the furthest lobster pots I could see.

I went back and concocted a plan to paddle out and then dive from the paddleboard towing my float behind me. One problem the string on my anchor was too short so I had to head in to slightly shallower water. The current was just pulling my whole set up about a foot eastwards every wave as the anchor line was vertical so only managed a few proper dives before heading back in.

Vis was about 4m on the surface, fading slightly as you went down and then got a lot worse for the final 1.5m as the bloom got bad.

I bought some pure evolution fins from fins4u about a month ago this was their first outing, they feel amazing so much lighter and more life than my old ones, they look great but I'm sure I'll scratch them to buggery soon!
Don't know if it was just new toys but swimming felt faster both on the surface and underwater and very comfortable.

Rather late on the update I'm afraid but went out on Friday PM from Wembury with kayaks. I dived near the beach, south of the river mouth on the point, a mile east, and on the east side of the Mewstone. In all locations I could barely see past the end of my fins or about 2.5 meters :(

Guys I'm new to this diving lark so does this bloom eventually disappear and if so when?

CR

Hey Cave_raver,

Yeh this bad visibility is due to a bloom in phytoplankton (small algae) as the days are getting longer and there is more sunlight to photosynthesize. This begins to clear when the zooplankton (small animals) bloom a few weeks after as some species feed on the algae, this then has a knock on effect up the food chain, providing more food for bigger organisms that in turn provide food for even bigger organism and thus it is good fishing!

Panhandle how far out are lobster pots you are referring to?swimming distance? I was planning on diving Budleigh today, but went kayaking off Sidmouth yesterday and most of it was green slush.

About 150-200m I reckon. Terrible vis for the first 50m, improving after that for a while and then 1m+ increase in quite a short space of time once you got out a bit further. All of this was out from the Salting hill Cross.

East wind for the next week. Torbay vis down the pan again. Back to you tube. Just like the winter.

Guys can anyone advise if there is any viz thurlestone side of the south hams. All this side blown out or the dreaded bloom.thinking salcombe area or bigbury.
Don't want to drive all the way to find 0 viz.

Cheers guys
Lee

Thick bloom down that way mate I dived yesterday afternoon high tide and it was less than a meter. Spent an hour in and saw nothing. Is mesdfoot not doable or maybe the orestone? The easterlies werent strong enough to blow that out surely

Cheers scotty couldn't make the meet up bank hols but must get together for a few dives mate. Just hold off for some cracking viz - beer glass half full!!!

last Friday Plymouth side of bigbury ( just) was pretty terrible. could see the end of the gun but not much more. north cornwall seems ok, might be a longer drive but maybe worth it?!

Hi All,
