South Devon 2013

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
On channel 5 tonight, 8 pm is a programme about Gibraltar and it includes spearfishing !!

Was indeed treated to 6-7 meters vis at Thurlestone, great dive because of it but no silvers seen. Lots of other life around, plenty of spider crabs but didn't see any of tempting enough size.
Things went pear shaped afterwards when I had to smash open my waterproof egg for being too tightly sealed, seeing my car keys flying and losing immobiliser in process. Ended up being towed home. Rubbish.:waterwork
Thanks to the kindly kayak fishermen who offered me torches and even lifts home!! Good people.
However, I got my first ever flattie, 1.5kg exactly flounder. Chuffed with that. Worth all the hassle.:D

Thats the strangest flounder I've ever seen! Try Dover sole (not that I've ever speared one) Rep given!

That's even better then!! Checked image with a book and it looked closer to the flounder pic, but had hoped it was a sole. Even more chuffed. Looks like my fish identification needs some work.
Cheers.

Cracking dover mate. My favourite of the flatfish for sure. Bad luck on the immobiliser I thought forgetting my towel and losing a sock was bad until I read your post... I dived the last hour of light yesterday and saw another spearo getting ready in the bottom carpark on the grass was that you? Came home empty handed as once again my sinuses packed up.

Lol.....great tasting your in for a treat, how's you're filleting skills? And would defo recommend pan fried:)

Yep - that was me. As you passed at the junction in South Milton I wondered if it was you as it looked like spearo gear in the back and (having already had someone wonder if I was you at the Devon and Cornwall meet in May) saw a similarity in appearance. As this was only a vague thought I just cracked on with getting ready!! Next time I see a green punto I'll come and say hi - if you see a stranded zafira rescue me!!

Never filleted a flattie before - will find out how good I am or not as soon as I've finished this post! Cheers for cooking tip - will give it a go. Have eaten a fair bit of sole so looking forward to the even better taste of having caught it myself. Nice.

That looks like a nice Sole! FOM entry?

Cheers and good idea - done.:D

Thanks for reps people and big thanks to Dave L for your contact regarding my key nonsense - good man, rep to follow.
Going back tomorrow after work to take advantage of the vis and have a bit more time to splash about in the water.
Cheers.

Jim and I headed for the south hams yesterday dived a couple of spots. First found the thornback ray weighing in at 11lb 2oz, about 8m depth not great viz but better than of late. Jim took his pollock just under 3lb mark. Moved on to our next spot with quite a few spearos in the water, don't think the guys are on here but not much seen other than the odd small bass and usual spiders. We swam out to some outer reefs, where jim saw but couldn't get in range nice 5lb bass. I took a mullet out of a small shoal, some fantastic viz with some excellent deep gullies screaming bass but where were they? I didn't see a bass all day. Time to head in crusing over the sand was this John Dory 1lb 4oz. Picked up a few spiders for a mate, who expected bigger so he took two and I returned the other two last night off of ness beach.
