Hi all,

Id thought I would introduce myself as I have only just joined this site! I have recently moved down to Exmouth and in addition to a few other water sports, I thought that I would give spear fishing a crack. Seems like it could be good fun and a great way to eat some more fish! I've got most of the kit I would need, yet to get a spear gun though (key some might say!), but I would be interested in meeting some local people who might be able to show me the ropes.

Till then, cheers,

Matt

Don't worry Matt, it had been such a poor start to the season you would've only shot a couple less fish than most of us with spear guns! :D

Plenty of hard or spiky things to catch in the meantime. I quite like putting the spear gun away and searching for things with both hands free or my trusty crab/lobster hook.

Matt, just got back from a dive and saw your post. Went in at a local mark here in Exmouth. Poor viz but quite fishy. brought home a couple of mullet.
Went down to Budleigh in the afternoon and saw a spearo going in at low tide. Anyone on here?
Spider crabs seem to be in, but quite small.
If you fancy going in around Exmouth, let me know. There are a few of us who dive regularly.

Having been a member of this forum for a long time, and learned lots from both the guernsey and more recently this thread, i finally have something worth shouting about! Went groccle dodging at bantham on todays low tide, viz was superb, a real pleasure just to be in the water. I saw nothing fishy in the shallows, so swam out to deeper water hoping for a large pollack or a flatie but instead found the biggest (male) lobster i've ever seen. Brought it ashore thinking maybe the aquarium or lobster hatchery would be interested, it was that big! But with no way to transport it, the lifeguards took me out on their rib to put him back. We found a suitable spot, placed him in the water, then watched as he fell 8 meters and lay on his back not moving! I had to re-suit up and dive in without a mask to right him again! I'm sure i'll feel the warm glow of knowing he lived to see another tide, but sausage and spuds for tea felt dissapointing!

That was probably me. Haven't really dived Budleigh much so went straight out from the cross on Salting Hill. Don't know if that is the best area.

Wasn't very fishy, saw only wrasse and small pollack but got a decent sized lobster to bbq for tea. Plenty of decent sized spiders (but I was told no crustaceans) and took a look at a big pot that must have had 30 big brown crabs in. That fisherman will be happy when he pulls that.

Found a few patches of weird black seafloor (the size of your living room). Looked like ash left over from a fire which would be impressive as it was 6m down! Left it well alone

Jim and I took to the boat and hit three spots off Torbay on Friday morning.

The weather was pretty unsettled and the easterly had got up and knackered quite a bit of the stunning viz.

We anchored in a massive current in a spot out of the swell and got in to find a milky 3-4m.

About an hour and a half later we had three bass and two mullet on the stringers.

We moved over to check out another spot which was nice and deep with a really cold current running on the bottom over some pretty featureless rocks. I didn't take any more shots but Jim bagged another bass and a mullet.

After that we moved back to Thatcher rock and had a good dive in better viz as the tide dropped. I considered a monster pollack but let him go because I'm not keen on eating them.

The day would have been pretty perfect if it wasn't for the outboard going wrong on the way back to the harbour and having to use the spare.

Getting beaten 5 - 2 by Jim meant that I got the pleasure of filleting all the fish into 6 and a half pounds of fillets. Biggest bass was 3lb 8oz, biggest Mullet 4lb 9oz.

All in all a pretty good day out!

Couple of night dives nice to be able to stay local.
1st night - 2 bass each 4.5lb + 2 others around 2.5lb
Speared and lost 2 bass in 4 to 5 lb mark, gutted for fish and my freezer learning quickly my thought process to find, aim, spear, restrain and despatch. Especially after losing decent bass not once but twice.

2nd night not so good conditions but 5 bass taken biggest just shy of 3lb, first time properly stoned 2 of these bass. Have to say 'A great feeling, knowing you've despatch them instantly. Nothing huge but happily distributed and fed all our friends. Gives you a buzz giving to mates who could never normally buy local caught bass due to cost.

Easterlies looking like there heading this way so might have to look south hams, love diving when minutes from home.

Hi All,

Couple of late reports from Monday and Tuesday. Went out with North1 Monday night and had a night scratching in the holes. Very little swimming about on these small tides this way. Two decent mullet taken and i had about twenty dives at a lobster but he was in a super tricky spot and i couldnt quite reach him even with the speargun. Ditched the gym last night when asked if I wanted to go spearing off a mates kayak and a good night looking at new ground and picked up two more 3lb mullet. Mackerel about in the thousands, rd mullet shoaling and bait fish galore. looking good for the next few weeks spearing. A bass taken near Ladram too.

Good fishing Lee! The forum is on new software, so probably a bug - i will let stephan know...

Actually not new software just a new server :)

Scrumpy I can't replicate the issue - photos upload fine for me. Can you let me know exactly the steps you are going through and any error messages reported when completing those steps.

Hi mate

Manage attachments
Look up and load files - think I have a max of 5 files
Load
If I try to load 2 or more photos ( just tried again ) both say they're loading but only 1 shows up as an attachment.
Have plenty of memory.
If I try to load another it overwrites the previous, happened a few times now.

Sorry not trying to show off my fish honest gov!!!! Tried loading attachments and forgot to delete before submitting.

Night dives are certainly getting the fish recently ..... but in this weather it is not for me !!! Good catches though Scrumpy !! I have found mullet scarcer than normal , but prefer most other fish anyway !!! Terry

Just back home from 3rd night dive to finish my rest days. New spot strong current running, close to home. Very close in fact could have walked it!
2 bass taken biggest approx 3.5lb, missed nice size flounder. Couldn't decide whether to take it or not, in the end it made the decision for me!
Sorry poor photo past midnight and up in 4 hours, will be tired but a happy chap. Top bass in photo is from previous night.

Cheers all

Does anyone know of any restrictions on spearfishing in the Bantham / Bigbury area at all? Couple of pals of mine have heard something along these lines but unsure. I'm not aware of any but though best to check it out. Thanks.
