Nice haul there Dave , great haul of lobsters !!! I was in at Torbay on Sunday as well (probably the same area ) and had a couple of nice Pollack biggest nearly 4 lbs , also a big spider crab and a small brown one as well !! I also saw a John Dory as well but left it alone . Today I was at another spot (miles away ) and had a couple of nice sole ,about 2 lbs each , they are really awkward bast$%&* to fillet , they slide in one direction but grip in the other !!! saw a few bass and mullet but no chance of a shot though , and took another spider crab as well . Great weather and vis but not very fishy , happy days though !!!! Terry.....

I agree foxy. I usually leave them gutted in the fridge over night. I think most fish are better after resting a while in there. Plus you have the added bonus of them being easier to fillet the next day. I've eaten bass in the past that has almost been tough it was so fresh. If the truth were known I had a bit of a gathering for the tennis etc at home and was keen to fill the table with a nice assortment so everything was cooked at lunchtime. I've been eating a lot of spider crab lately and would go as far to say that I find it the most superior of all the crustaceans. A bit tedious and messy to deal with. And no way would I go for one on a restaurant menu. I'd be throwing it all over the place. I eat them in the garden after a few pints so by then I don't really care what I look like or how much of it I'm wearing.

Spiders are very popular over here, big ones around the 5lb mark will cost you £10 in the fishmonger & a lot more in a restaurant...I love them too.
I make a great sharing dish in my giant wok, just loads of cracked spider legs & cut up Legs socket portions, pre boiled & re cooked in the wok with the usual Thai ingredients .. chilli ginger coconut milk & coriander.. sticky fingers & lots of fun all around the table.

That's what it's all about mate. I was gobsmaked when travelling through Brittany as a kid and watching the whole family feasting on frutti di mare. Little children as young as 5/6 picking whelks and cracking crabs at the table. It's a bit of theatre I suppose. Totally the norm in that part of the world but so eating mullet and we don't even want to start on that.......

The only place I have seen spider crabs dished up in a restaurant in England (whole ) is at the Hive Cafe in Burton Bradstock they sit on top of a sea food platter ( frutti di mare style ) £60 for 2 people !! I am sure spider crab meat has been used in crab sandwiches and salads at many places for a long time though !! I take a good few each year and find it freezes OK as well, for a couple of months . Terry.....

Hi All,

Just got in from Budleigh after a window of opportunity came up from work. Bass about none taken, very skittish. Picked up a great lobster only to discover she was in berry. vis mixed from 2m to 4m. No mullet though, strange.

Dived Hope Cove area today , covered a lot of ground , one big shoal of small bass seen, but very little else , great conditions 6-8 metres vis , took home 4 very large spider crabs . Terry....

Hi all, went in a coupe of times this week just west of there at my normal spot. Couple of schools of small bass and a few good sized ones too in the gullies. More further out, lots of big spiders and a few big mullet, I took a sizeable mullet and and a few bass and a small bag of crabs for my local restaurant who now owe me a free meal for two! Missed a huge bass and a good 6 pounder too... Gutted! Seems the silver fish are making a show now!

Shame the illegal netters have been back three times already this year...

Alaistair B , you have done well to get Bass this week, I have been in a lot all over the place this week and seen very few Bass and those I have seen have kept their distance ! , had a few nice Pollack in deeper water, some plaice , and a couple of nice Sole as well , and have plenty of crab meat in the freezer. . Conditions have been great , excellent weather and vis and have explored some very nice spots ( by kayak ) and dived many new places as well , just not very fishy though . Terry...

Terry, sent you a message but not sure if it made it through?

Down in Salcombe / East Portlemouth over the weekend. Does anyone have any vis predictions or areas I should go and have a look? Not really been down that way before, but a glance at charts make me thing Prawle Point looks interesting? Any suggestions of good country for a dip? Cheers.

It's all good around that area but currents around Prawle point itself can be very strong.

Thanks Spiderman. Do you reckon I'd be safer / better off going to the east or west of Prawle on a rising tide?

Prawle is a great dive. Park at the NT car park and just walk downhill until you fall in the water. Or you can take a right turn at the bottom of the car park, walk over to Prawle Point and dive the wreck of the Dimitrios, the Heye-P and the Yvonne.

Easterly winds have made Torbay a bit choppy , so vis has gone down from a few days ago , but may be better further offshore ! Terry...
