South Devon 2013

Hi there, I'm pretty new to spear fishing but have done a bit up here in the North Sea and some whilst holidaying in Brittany. I haven't been in since November up here due to viz/time off during daylight etc.

Anyway in a couple of weeks time I'm down in Plymouth doing a RIB course. I've a couple of days off either side and was wondering if anyone has any safe/generally well know spots in the Plymouth/South devon area suitable for shore dives. I don't want/need to know any secret spots, just somewhere I can get in and maybe see a fish. Any advice on current vs tide for the spots would be welcome.

If the conditions aren't great I'll just head for a surf on the boards or a spot of rod fishing from the yak.

Cheers,

Tim

Welcome Tim.
I am in east Devon and I'm afraid it isn't good this way at the moment. You could try Torbay. Depending on the weather nearer the time, it may be worth looking at Meadfoot Beach, Babacombe or Brixham.
Maybe someone from down Plymouth way could advise on that area?
Good luck and be careful if you are going in alone.

No vis in torbay chap it is brown everywhere. Weve lost 2 fisherman in Torbay due to the rough conditions this week so anyone planning a trip down this way is better off saving there pennies :(

Thanks for the above, I'll be down anyway so just looking to do a bit on the off chance. I'll have a look at conditions nearer the time, it looks like the surfing is more likely!

hi all,

belated happy new year to you all,

I am having a (sort of personal) clear out of some kit - got some new goodies coming this year with my name on :)

I will post it in the for sale section as well but thought i would mention it here as most of you are local :

e "Cressi Geronimo 95 pro (closed muzzle model) - had new bands line bungee last year had little use, you can convert this is open muzzle if preffered for about £10 - £80
Apnea legend black suit (L) - used once if memory serves me right! - £70
Cressi Gara Pro fins 8/9 - normal scuffs as you would expect, also damage to one of thtips" where it rubbed on the floor after falling off my trolley at the airport. It has shamfered (sp!) about 1cm of plastic off the corner of the fin!! - £30

lets hope the weather this year is better than last...................

Cant be all that hard can it!

cheers all,

anthony

all now sold, cheers guys

Looked in the water at Torquay today - looks like there maybe some vis for anyone still diving.
Am going to get in tomorrow afternoon so will post how it turns out.
Cheers.

Great post up as cams show calm conditions but difficult to say exactly on viz. might try after work sat, so wait on your update mate. I'll be in Torquay somwhere sheltered I expect

Cheers

Hi Lee,

Went in at Paignton in the end to try a new spot, quite milky but not disappointed to have gotten in. Found it better going further out from the shore and a couple of meters vis on the bottom. Did not see a single fish but was still pleasant and now know where to go for mussels.;)

Been calm for a few days now so I reckon you'd be ok getting in tomorrow - hope you have a good dive.:)

Cheers,

Dave.

Cheers mate for update.
Just got that urge to get wet.
Had to amend post as I read it back to myself and it said 'just got the urge to get wet together'!!!!rofl

As fish are few and far between at this time of year ,are crabs and lobsters still around ?

Ha ha - I think we're all glad you cleared that one up!! Enjoy the purge of your urge.

Mirror, didn't see any crabs about today despite checking plenty of nooks and crannies. But did come across a nice brown crab last month in Torquay, good size but no joy in coaxing him out.

I've just got back in from a night dive near Plymouth. It was not as bad as we were expecting on the temperature front, nudging 7 degrees in the air and probably about the same in the water. Viz was non existent near the beach, but cleared to 2m deeper out. Nothing of note seen, just some small turbot and plaice in the surf zone.

Took a quick walk along Brixham breakwater at lunch today and looked ok in the water, good enough for me to make my mind up that I'll give it a shot on Friday afternoon. Otherwise Torbay was in a bit of a state today. I'll keep my fingers crossed that things remain ok at Brixham until Friday and post a quick report - which will no doubt contain the following 4 words.....nothing caught, nothing seen!!:D
If anyone has a better suggestion for location on Friday afternoon (anywhere from Torbay round to Plymouth) I'd appreciate a heads up - seems to look a bit grim along the coast but I may have missed something. ;)
Cheers.

hi anthony can you get speargun barrels i,m after a 130 and a 140 cheers mate will be after another one of those suits, me and dad bought last year thanks

Hi Neale,

apologies for the delay. We can not get anything quite that long i'm afraid - about 110 and 115 is the longest we can get,

no problem on the suits - just remind me which size you need?

cheers,

anthony

After being fed up with getting changed in the dark on night dives, or using the torches and wasting power, I got round to fitting a light bar to the tailgate on the Mondeo.
It operates on the internal switch so turns on and off automatically as the boot opens and closes. It's like having a personal mini sun.
