Nothing caught, nothing seen. Vis was ok at Brixham, didn't go in at Breakwater but a little further out. Met a couple of guys on kayaks while out who had bought spearguns last year but not got into it yet, they hope to try more this summer. Took the time to promote DB!! Far from a wasted trip as came away with plenty of scallops which were delicious and am now comfortably diving deeper which has been a goal of year round training/practice.

Nice to see people getting out and not going home empty handed as I do every time! hopefully the fish are around by the time I get some new socks and gloves, mine are a little holy for this weather as I found out a few weeks ago!
What depth did you find the scallops at? Yet to see any myself.
Cheers

Oh yeah, water was 12 degrees.

Surprised to see this. My reading was 11°C in December. I've not seen anything sizeable in Brixham all winter. The only fish seen were small mullet, pollack and wrasse around the breakwater. I saw a sizeable crab there last time at Berry Head but couldn't get him out of the hole. Going to have to stop losing my crab hooks!

After being fed up with getting changed in the dark on night dives, or using the torches and wasting power, I got round to fitting a light bar to the tailgate on the Mondeo.
It operates on the internal switch so turns on and off automatically as the boot opens and closes. It's like having a personal mini sun.

I have two rear facing halogen spots fitted in the back go my Hilux surf, brilliant idea, especially as we keep the boat on the beach and can load and unload in the dark easily. That light bar looks tres smart. I have a Mondeo too and the boot is immense, swallow a horse in there! ( or a Tesco burger)

Me to dive last sunday d4i was 9°c from 11°c in jan no fish seen just few scallops

Does anyone know whether Spearfishing and shellfish collecting will be permissible when they turn Torbay into a marine conservation zone?

I fitted the LED bar rather than halogen spots as it takes up no space and it draws a tenth of the power from the battery compared to the little internal light; this means I don't have to run the engine when getting changed and packing kit away.
It's a marine light, so it is waterproof and kicks out 600lm per bar.

Evening all!

Just a short post to say happy new year, I've been off the scene due to a messy divorce and stuff and just starting to get my life back together.

When are the spiders due to start marching back in? I need some free food in skint!

Anyone seen any fish yet!???

Lol! Hope so Nick! Would be great to get out on the boat this year... Shame we didn't manage a Plymouth get together at the end of last season as planned...!

Just got to quit smoking again so I can dove properly again, eeeek! Too much stress at the mo!

So when are the crabs marching lol! March April time?

More like May/June in my experience. This bucket of 3lb+ males was collected on June 20th last year from my East Devon spider crab place.

Can't wait! Lets hope the warm weather stays to get them marching in early!

Oooh just remembered my lobster hole I found at the end of last season too...! Getting excited again!

Im sure we can meet up for a dive soon weather permitting. The boats out of the water at the moment so will have to be a shore dive. Its got to have a repair job on it before i use it again. Took a bit of damage in the bass fishing wars.
I plan to do more diving this year. Last years diving was very limited to once every couple of weeks.

Sounds good Nick!

If you need any contacts for your boat let me know, I have a number of friends who do everything from glass fibre boats to out board and main engines. They are cheap too!

Planning on going for a dive tomorrow afternoon - probably around Thurlestone / Hope Cove area. Not sure what to expect vis wise but have normally been able to get a couple of meters.
Will post a report tomorrow eve sometime.

Dai , before you set off I would recommend you look at the webcam of the Cottage Hotel at Hope Cove it gives an excellent panoramic view of this area. It will not help with vis though !!!
