Vis in Bigbury Bay this evening was a good 5m, lets hope it holds

I was also around that area. Took two Mullet home, missed an Bass (6lb at least!) and missed a perfect opportunity with another tasty Mullet by leaving the safety on... Doh! School boy error.

Still it was a fun dive and as Spadeyo said, vis 5 to 6 meters in places.

Had some time out Spearing with the Shiny1 for the 1st time in a while. At one spot he says, "good Pollock here boy" I got my PB 9lb. I also had a 9lb Ray. Nicky got in first and had a good bass on his first dive, he also had a nice Trigger, a Dover sole, Pollack and Ray. My best bass was just over 2kilo. I saw a John Dory but it was too small. A great day out. I need to get one of those top of the range suits you have Nick, I get cold too quick.

Great fish there Mr Bishop !!!! 2 superb specimens in one session !! obviously you won't say where , ( or Shiny will probably fillet you !!) but was it an early dive ? low or high tide ? shallow -deep ? I hope you enjoy the rest of the bank holiday peeling all the spuds needed to go with all that fish !!! Terry....

Great fishing gents, good to hear about it and encouraging that it was a shore dive. Tells me I need to explore more spots!!
All the best, D.

Terry it was deeper diving for me on the incoming tide. I won't be taking any more Ray. I didn't feel great about taking it as they are so docile but I will be eating it so he'll be part of me and the amount of slime coming from it. I had no idea it was that bad. No wonder Shiny wasn't filleting it for me.
All the best.

I had a great weekend camping at the beach and two nice bass Sunday but none seen today. I did take a big flat tie for the bbq on the beach. The viz was poor. It looks like a good week ahead so I am looking forward to getting in again.

Last minute dive last night, 1st area a sea of thick weed bumped into good 6lb mullet lying on the bottom, no chance to get a shot off. Viz zero to 0.5m
Moved to next area couple miles away, 1st minute picked up the lobby walking over the sand. Had taken my goody bag off my float due to drag, 1/2 mile walk back to the car, happy with that as now in my dive box. Back in the water very quiet but found both mullet holed up in a reef, took the bass on the way in. Viz 3m but dirty to zero in places, expected better but just had lobster Thermidor with the family for lunch. yum yum.

Nice catch there Scrumpy !! Good looking lobster , how heavy was it ? I still have seen hardly any Bass in the Bay especially anything over a couple of pound , but hopefully they should start showing more soon . I have got the next 2 weeks off so should be getting a lot more soon Terry....

Weighed just over 4 lb, only dives of late have been at night. There are good fish to be had local to us, but the viz is the main problem. Happy to share my not so secret spots!!!! if you fancy staying local on your time off, PM or phone me mate.
I'm going to upgrade my torch to cut through the gloom, xtar d06 is on my list. Chucks out 860 lumens compared to my 260 at present. Whilst taking fish local I'm struggling to get myself down to the south hams.

Yes there probably is good fish to be had , but as you say the vis is poor , so they may be all around but I just can't see them !!! I may try a quick night dive but I just like diving in great locations with good vis , fish being secondary , but I usually get something edible . I may also be getting a dinghy or small RIB soon . Terry ...

Vis in Bigbury Bay continues to be good. Had 6-7m this evening and beautifully calm conditions. Trouble is all I ever see are pollack! Did see a tiny John Dory but still waiting to spot a bass or mullet underwater, let alone get the chance to go for one!

Hi All,
Well back from Tampa Bay Florida to Budleigh Bay Devon. Bit different after a month of heat. Took some will power to obey the 5:51am alarm but duly dragged myself and my newly added American belly down to the beach. Straight in and fish everywhere but sadly the mullet were small and the bass smaller. Pushed out of the shallows and out to the kelp and very slow. Mullet increased in size but not worth the shot. Pushed further into the tide and the holes only had monster wrasse. Beautiful fish of about 7lb nearly kissed me as I entered one cave, all rainbow coloured! Nothing out there so came into the inshore jungle and the fish were still there but nothing of size even as the tide began to push. As the cramp set in and a chill I called it a day and swam along the sand/shingle join. Two fishing weights, a new Dexter lure and an Animal watch was a good little haul.
Back in soon I hope

Spent the bank hols weekend around the Torbay area, dived various spots that were new locations for spearing for me. None of them were holding fish, other than wrasse and some pollock. I'm working on the basis of discounting them for future dives if they prove to be poor (could be plenty of other factors though, this is no science!). Basically going to give ansteys cove and meadfoot a miss in the future, and drive the extra distance to south hams. Did get some good practice in though with my wife providing an escort service in the kayak, and she enjoyed the paddle about, and possibly tempt her in for a spearfish in the near future.
Does anyone know if there is any real evidence behind fishing on different states of tide? I tend to think its better a few hours before high tide through to high, but a mate of mine swears on a few hours before low to low being best!?

hi, good to hear you had a good break. Going to that spot in the morning to fish the rising tide. May fish the bay side. How was the viz?
Dave
