South Devon 2013

It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
Good haul of silver there Scrumpy ! your getting good success during night dives . I might try myself before too long . I have been getting mostly Pollack recently ( mainly due to location !) not seeing large fish of any type ( except wrasse !) but eating well !! Terry....

I caught my first Pollock the other day. A spearfishing book I have, says you should gut them immediately. Does this mean as soon as you've killed it or once your out of the water. I didn't realise this until I had driven home but ate it anyway.

Hi, I used to post occasionally on the cornwall board but been quiet on there for a while, moved to devon this year, i've been in at Anstey Cove and Sidmouth, was looking for some nice fairly relaxed/quiet spots if anyone could pm me some hints. I did get a lobster down in Torbay but otherwise haven't really put the hours in tso far, Cornwall has been good on the Bass and mullet front. Also tried to get hold of Exe Spearfishing club but got no reply, is this club functioning? Are they worth contacting? was just really after some local info.

MrCoombe,

I've tried to get hold of them also. They have a Facebook page which seems to get a few posts each day. I moved to Exeter a few months ago and have tried to get involved and find a dive buddy but to no avail! I've heard off Burleigh Salterton beach is alright though.

Good luck!

Matt

I gut most fish soon after killing , not sure why ,I always have done , sometimes I will fillet them if the weather is hot and put the fillets in a (small ) cool box with ice , also saves having smelly fish remains in the bin for a week or so in hot weather ! Terry..

If your in the water for a while, are you gutting them on your dive. Imagine this could be quite tricky?

Gutting in the water takes about ten seconds. Knife in the arse up to the head hand in pull and rip. I never gut fish when diving anymore. From experience you'll only attract the unwanted attention of Seals and sharks. Sharks are not going to bother you theoretically but they will make you jump. Seals can be a different story. I do mine in 4 foot of water when getting out. Plus a whole fish makes a better picture ;)

Morning folks. Getting into the water somewhere around Paignton on Saturday if anyone fancies a partner. Promised the Mother in Law fresh fish. (with a trip to the fishmongers as a potential backup plan)

Was good on Sunday, unfortunately have been away for the week with no updates. Had a good 3 to 4 meters in some places with a fair bit of activity.

I was in during the day on Tuesday. A sheltered spot near Torquay. Vis was really good, could see the bottom at 4m.

Well that settles it, come hell or highwater, I am going to be out on Saturday morning. (unless the wife instructs otherwise). Was very impressed with the Watcombe area. Anyone else diving that around there?

Do you spearos tend to dive on your own?

Having only been freediving for the last year or so I'd really like to see what spearfishing is like. If any of you are in the Plymouth area would you mind if I came along?

Have kayak will travel :)

Popped in today, up to 4m in Ansteys near the bottom. Brown crab and couple scallops in the bag, got a spider to but he had a slightly soft shell and no meat to speak of, has anyone had this before? There were hundreds down there all male

roflroflroflrofl that will be the clipboard brigade checking our catch bags for out of season scallops again

Adz the lyme bay scallops season has been going for years now . No scallops from july to october. There used to be signs at brixham and torquay showing the season aswell as minimum size. Last year they seemed hell bent on catching and fining someone for out of season scallops. This year its quiet so who knows.

If you feel the undying urge to take them it might be a good idea to keep it off the forum ;)

Hi, anyone know about the current visibility down in South Devon (eg Thurlestone, Prawle, etc.)? I went in today at Teignmouth and it was pretty awful (about 1.5m), and I'm keen to get in again somewhere better tomorrow.
