South Devon 2013

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
Dai , before you set off I would recommend you look at the webcam of the Cottage Hotel at Hope Cove it gives an excellent panoramic view of this area. It will not help with vis though !!!

Thanks for the tip Mirror, will do!

I've been checking all the web cams over last week looking for somewhere to dive but to no avail. Exmouth to start point looks rough with SE, Hope cove has been choppy so would not think there would be any viz. Haven't checked Plymouth but would think that might be your only chance. That is unless you head to north devon / cornwall. Checked quite a few places around the bay but no where that looked worth a go.

Took a trip out yesterday. Plymouth was okay with about 3m visibility. The water was about 9°C. Didn't see too much apart from some small wrasse and some bicycle tyres. A strong Easterly made the east side undiveable. There was absolutely loads of surf, though.

The viz on the North coast is awful. I dived there on Sunday, and even offshore, the viz was no more than a metre and a half at the surface. 15 meteres down it was very gloomy and at 25m it was like night diving with 50cm viz. I didn't actually see the sea bed until I hit it.

Thanks for the input lads, Torbay is def out as was rare surf conditions as I drove out late yesterday. Will narrow it down from Hope to Plymouth, anywhere further I haven't got time to get there and back. On Arrons post Is be tempted by Plymouth. Cheers for the heads up!

We went in at the Mt Batten area. Lovely area for old bicycles, gloves, pipes and frisbees! Let me know how it goes.

Well, having finished work 2 hours later than expected I ran out of time to be able to do a Plymouth dive. Which is a massive shame as I headed to South Milton Sands whereby I was treated to vis the same described by Trelawney in North Devon a few posts ago.
In and out within 15 mins - swam to stack and back purely for exercise (and a bit of stubborness). I was at this spot a few times last year in seemingly worse conditions with much better vis - which I suppose raised unrealistic optimism.

Arron - I could have been surrounded by bikes / tyres etc as you were at Mt Batten and wouldn't have had a clue!!

Terrible.:duh

There's always next time eh lads?!!!!

If you need any contacts for your boat let me know, I have a number of friends who do everything from glass fibre boats to out board and main engines. They are cheap too!

Thanks Alastair, its going to be done through my insurance. Got to do a few other things to it before the season kicks off so will let you know if i need any of your contacts. Cheers

Inspired from my trip to Venturesports this morning to collect my FOY Trophy and prize (Beuchat Guardian Float) I decided on a shore dive even if it was a bitter cold day. This was the time to try out my new PoloSub MTM suit i purchased at the end of last season.
From the car park i could see the dark shape of the reef stretching out to sea,a good sign of some viz. I got the strange looks we all get for getting changed in a car park on a bitter cold chilly day. Today i seemed to get more than normal then remembered i have a pissette fitted on my new suit. A fantastic bit of kit once you get used to using it. Must cover it up next time though when i enter and exit the water!!
The water was cold but i only felt it on the face to start with and soon got over that. Viz was good, probably 3 to 4m even better at depths.
I was only in looking for flatties today and didnt even try for anything else. Flatfish seem a good bet for this time of year.
The first flattie i found was a plaice,no monster but good eating size. The next dive down i come across a ray 6lb 2oz, again no monster but good eating so on the stringer he went. Another hour searching with nothing seen was enough for my first shore dive of the season.
I was well happy with the new suit in the cold conditions. The only thing that got cold today was my hands and that was down to old gloves.

If anyone is passing Salcombe / Thurlestone way can they give me a viz report please.
Looking to go Friday I have checked web cams etc, Hope cove/Bigbury showing calm conditions but need viz/colour of sea.
Oddicombe landslide again at the weekend, check out south devon fishing forum for latest photos of the area. Red slick out to sea.

Lee,
If conditions stay calm over next couple of days I may well be around there on Thurs, if so you've got yourself a vis report.

Better, i have a periscope fitted now!! Left a couple of dustbin lid size flatties for you.
