Cheers all, sounds like i over cook spider crab as well. The talk of thai/garlic spiders and lobster is making serously hungry... Im getting back in as soon as possible!

Thanks Dai Asbo, I think we actually met last summer around the time I moved down, it was at the living coasts car park
Indeed we did, I had wondered if you'd made the move so good to hear that you have. Hope you're able to get some quality spearing in now!

Lobsters are the most difficult to get just right as the difference between, a minute more or less, really makes a difference!
I am a foodie, I love lobster but it is so easy to get it...... "not quite perfect"
There is a problem trying to quote cooking times due to a few things like ... the volume of water in the pot, the temperature of water, the temperature of the lobster & your heat source. The key for consistency is based around how long the water goes off the boil.
Ideally the water will keep boiling, that is why I prefer to cook the smaller ones of around 2lb.
Lobster Thermedor is a classic & rightly so in my mind! Lobster, cheese, cream, butter, brandy ......
We have a couple of great French restaurants in town that serve superb lobster Thermedor if you have £100 to spare.

We had a day spearing around Plymouth sound last week. Most of the day was spent diving and playing with dolphins! We did manage to catch some fish. The pollock went to 4.5lb, but we didn't weight the garfish. Shame really as it was a monster.

Nice! Plymouth... thinking of Plymouth takes me back to 1993 in an instance. :D Not so much diving back then...

Morning all, any vis across Plymouth or South Hams? Considering dive Sunday early eve but not convinced. A couple of meters in Torquay I hear.

Any experience of the bloom yet? Seems to have hit Dorset just wondered if was present closer to home or not?

Plymouth viz is not bad at the moment, at least 4m in places, especially around Bovisand. We had 2m ish in Start Bay on Thursday, as there was a lot of sediment in the water.

Watcombe today, viz about 2m - second dive there and yet again nothing to see fish wise. Only just started spearfishing so guessing bad spot at this time of year?

Plymouth dive this evening, excellent vis just as Trelawney advised. Was much better than I expected, loads of bass about but all young and undersized, apart from one lone bass that I came across a few minutes into the dive but couldn't get gun round to it in time. Only a few mullet seen but nothing to take. No fish this time but thrilled to see the silvers out and ready to resume spearfishing on an obsessional level.

Torquay dive this afternoon, barely 2m vis and strong drift in the water. Nothing seen save for one group of mullet that I missed with a poor shot fired, the sort of shot you kick yourself over (which I have done). Starting to see jellyfish about, but otherwise little to report. Damn good exercise though!

Hi peeps,

I am based in Exeter and have been spearing for a couple of years now. I wanted to meet some people to dive with.

I have been reading about people going to Exmouth. Sounds interesting because I've never had any fish there, just a really huge brown crab. I normally end up in Torbay or right down in Looe when I have the time.

Anyway. Let me know if you're off anywhere local. Cheers.

Hi Badger, I'm in Exeter too but have only just starting out after a year of toying with the idea. Was hoping to get out while camping near Blackpool Sands this weekend but annoyingly I don't think there's enough room for all the kit so may just try to get wetsuit and mask in for a recce.

We dived a nice rocky spot yesterday as the sun was out and the reef was in the lee of a headland (which we had to climb down). No fish about, though not surprising as it was 8m viz with a low tide. I managed to tease out this lobster after 30min of playing hide and seek with it all over a reef.
The walk back up "Cardiac Hill" was horrible as it's almost vertical in places, and is an actual pony track!

I had a a great bank holiday dive this afternoon. SE winds, so I hit my favourite Devon lobster mark. The viz was a bit milky close in, but once 50m or so from shore, it cleared up brilliantly, probably 10m+ viz at slack water. I only saw one big bass and pollock for the first two hours, as I was being shadowed from the limit of the viz by a seal. It never came close for a play, so I was probably in its territory.
The last hour was spent hunting bugs, and I pretty much kept tripping over them. Only one was a bit tricky to get out, as he was in a deep, long hole. The rest weren't too bad, and came out with a bit of persuasion. I called it a day when I ran out of bags and hands, as I had a steep climb up the path to the car.
*Edit* I was opening a gate on the way back up. My other hand was full of kit so I had to use the hand I had the lobster in. As I reached over, the claw brushed my arm and he got a clawful of my forearm and wetsuit. Painful it certainly was! I had to pin the other claw out of the way and use my knife to lever him off me. No-one saw, so it was OK!

Got up early last Saturday morning to try new spot in South Hams but got there and conditions not good, drove to the other side of the headland to find calmer water but not ideal. Did 2 hours nonetheless in 1m vis, saw a few silvers but gone in the blink of an eye. Will return to other spot another day.

Got in after work today in Torquay and was greeted with some great vis in parts. Cloudy in many places but a consistent 2-3 meters and sometimes better. Generally not a lot about but did get 2 mullet on one shot which was satisfying as a start. Hadn't realised what had happened at first so was a pleasant surprise to discover the second fish.

First catches of the year at last.

Is there likely to be a any visit in Torbay next week? Staying down mon-wed, worried it has been quite windy recently and that the bloom is probably due?
