Dived meadfoot early this morning but blanked, viz was bad with a thick green cloud around the outer reefs. Saw dolphins on the otherside of shag rock and loads of wrasse but no bass or mullet.

Hi all,

Been diving today and caught 10 abalone, one monster one which I am holding in my hand. I will bring back the shell Scott, so I can show you. Going to dive Monday again or Tuesday for more and see if the spidercrabs have arrived down here.

Killien, where are you diving? What country? Abalone?

Just re read your old posts. France? Those look like our ormers (local Channel Island name for "abalone"). Can you legally dive for them?

Hi Dave,
Are you from the Channel Islands? I'm from france and dive in france/uk. As a far as I know it is not a problem to dive for these as long as you don't have air tanks. You cannot fish or collect any shellfish with air tanks. For the scallops in France, there is a season for collecting them. I have never seen abalone in UK waters.

The "abalone" you have are indeed "ormers". That's or-mer from the french for ear (their shells are ear shaped) and sea (where they live). This species are only found in the Channel Islands and a small section of the adjacent french coast.

In the Channel Islands you cannot dive or use any diving equipment (mask, wet suit etc) to collect them. There is also a closed season (8 months of the year closed). There are also limits on the number of days you can fish (only allowed 6 per month) and a strict minimum size limit. Actually as you collect them in winter by turning stones on very low spring tides only a very few days can you expect to catch any.

They are an endangered species and numbers caught are small.

I am not sure of the french position. I thought only a few licenced divers could collect them but not really sure. Any way enjoy them as they are delicious but you need to check the legal position before you do it again, just in case.

Happy hunting.

Dave

Hi Killien,

Can only take ormers on foot, can't dive free or with tanks. Take care or les flick will take care of you !

Merci Rob,
Yeah don't really want to have to deal with les flics, especially French ones, not always very nice...!

First fish of the year today.
3 mullet, also saw one bass which was too small to shoot.
Good news fish are back, bad news looks like the plankton is starting to bloom as the water is turning greenyish.

Weldone mate. Was that down Babbacombe? The fish forums are starting to report big catches of mackeral in and around the bay so hopefully they will hang around for a bit. How was the viz, I checked Meadfoot but it looked brown and decided not to go in,

viz was about 1/2 meters, the very low tide didnt help the viz but once it came in it cleared up a little.

Dived today covered loads of ground but no fish to be seen. Started at Meadfoot dived all around thachers to flat rock area then from hopes nose to longquarry and eventually ending at Oddicome almost dead.
Fish seen a wrasse a conger and some tiny pollock. Viz in some areas was 5 meters. OH i saw a pod of Dolphins which was nice:). Water was a little bit warmer 11c today but didnt fell it with my cool new suit:t.
The weather is looking good for next week.

This sounds sad but i'm reading the thread from Florida and i'm quite jealous of you guys being in at home. Viz is great out here in the lagoons but one of the neighbours popped in for a dip after dinner last year, near the inlet, and soon became an entree!
Soon be back to Budleigh though!
Keep us all informed.

South Devon Accomodation?

Hi, a friend has been offered a job in the Torbay area and is wondering what the accomodation situation is like (it being a holiday destination)? He's a professional looking to stay down there during the week (M/T/W/Th) but return home at weekends. Spearo-friendly accomodation would be handy but not essential. I wondered if any forum members might know of somewhere or be able to provide some general info. (you can PM me).

Thinking of going in at Meadfoot tomorrow, weather permiting. Haven't been in the water for 8 months so will have to take it easy. Anybody been in at meadfoot lately?

Dived babbacombe on thursday. Vis was at least 5m in places. Saw a family of cuttles, lay next to a placid doggie for a bit and saw loads of little bait fish. Nothing for tea though!
Spearheads. What new suit have you got??

I got a new elios its like smooth camo on the outside already put a few tears in it already. I dived on wednesday and friday morning saw 2 bass but couldnt get a shot in.

smooth skin? Brave!

Just out of interest, what state of the tide did you embark on your trip from meadfoot to oddicombe? Does the current work in your favor heading in that direction? I have alway thought it was a bit dangerous around there. Or are you just mad?:crutch
