Chris. Should not have laughed at you for not tying down your gun properly. I managed to lose my stringer complete with fat mullet this morning must be karma. If any one is in at sandy bay and finds it they are welcome to the fish. (home made stainless with black yellow cord). A needle in a hay stack i know but with the likes of steptoe tribs about you never know.

Hi All,
Nice fish Nick.
Just back from the blue. Met up with North1 for a shore dive and was rewarded with questionable viz and lots of tide. We perservered, Dave pushed to the reef's tip whilst I went out to one side. After an hour I had seen quite a few bass shoals move pass and managed to get one at range with the 90 Gabianno. I had one come at me three times presenting me with the classic kebab shot on. Three times he came a each time I bottled it, thinking "He'll turn broadside". Well i'm home and he's still swimming is the answer to that. Missed a sitter after that. I put it down to shear frustration at the previous fish miss. Saw Dave heading in, he'd seen nothing on the point and by that time i'd lost my float weight so we headed back with the one bass between us. Roll on the weekend.

Ps - No Steptoe results thus far - 2 guns and a stringer still out there!!!!!!!!!

hi all haven,t been on for sometime. been spearing a lot been getting some nice fish had problems with camera hope all sorted now. managed to get in today with these nasty south winds got these 2. biggest 5 lb 3 and other 3lb on the dot . should of had 2 more bigones not quick enough nice fish nick. happy hunting lads

Hi All,
Out today and what has happened to the viz? southerlies have ruined it around Exmouth. Went with North1, tried various spots but all were struggling with poor viz and pushing tide. Lots of pollack but only glimpses of bass twice in the day. The sea roughed up and we came home fishless. Good to stretch the lungs though and I managed to get down to 7.1m which is the furthest this season! The ears are improving and my eyes aren't closing involuntarily -haaaarahhh!

Hey Shiny1 - What type of ground did the Trigger come from? I've caught them on the rod but they seem to come from various ground. Broken reef, heavy reef and shingle onto mixed margins. Hard to work out a definitive ambush plan as they can be anywhere in any depth.

Triggers are an interesting fish. I think they still may not be classed as a native fish to the UK as they are not thought to breed here due to the water being too cold.
Having said that it is the increasing water temperature that is causing these fish along with others like the gilthead bream to be found off the south coast. I used to catch them in my pots over 30 years ago but overall numbers are increasing annually.
They seem to live at all depths including very shallow ie less than 2 metres. Often seen on the edge of rocks near or over sand they will enter cracks and holes in reefs very much like wrasse. Once in a hole they use the trigger spine on their dorsal fin to wedge themselves tight. A couple of years ago I shot a nice one in a hole and can tell you that the spine thing works. Really, really hard to pull out.
A couple of years ago DB member Andy Round from Guernsey was surrounded by a shoal of triggers in less than 10 feet of water and shot several before they left/he gave up. DB-ers Scottie 3030 and James T were making big catches of triggers down west somewhere for several seasons.
The one thing I definitely know about triggers is they bite - I have the scars to prove it. They will chew on you big style given a tenth of a chance. You have been warned.

i got my triggers from wales normally in big shoals they should in by end of july if there not there already! all in about 5m or less! very good eatin but like OMD said they will take chunks out of u so put ur stringer on ur float or u have a wetsuit with holes in the ass like jamesT
1st time I've been able to get in since the Norway trip. The winds have not been good and and as its northerly just for today I asked the Shiny oracle to suggest somewhere before it goes southerly again tmw. I got in about 7:15am loads of fish around. I took whatever was in range and edible. I saw bigger fish then I shot but I dont wait around I just shoot whats in line with the spear. Missed a few, but also was nailing them head on. The Beauchat Mundials are great in my opinion and the 75 has been brilliant in the stringweed.
