Just a quick update, watched Daniels you tube clips seems to go fairly deep. Is that maybe my problem I know they are often in close but as a rule are they usually in deeper areas.

Whoa there, don't go heading out for deep water because you think that's where the fish are.
First and most importantly learn to hunt quietly.
It's a common mistake when learning that you need to have a huge breath-hold and be able to dive deep to catch fish.
It's easy to assume there are no fish in the shallows because you don't see any.
Learn stealthy hunting, then you'll see plenty.
Practice silent fining and breathing on the surface, every time a fin splashes that's another 20m between you and the fish.
Learn to duck-dive spearo style, using only one leg, it's much quieter, every splash or ripple is another 20m.
Take out the snorkel before diving to stop bubble noises under water.
Land on the seabed silently, not like a ton of bricks.
You get the picture, predators are silent and stealthy and sneaky you are a predator and the fish know it.
Become sneaky and you will find fish in the most unexpected places.
