Hey all, I see a lot of you posting mullet on here. Shot one by accident last week (end of breath silver flash),have eaten them before but I don't really like em. But any suggestions for recipes? Otherwise I'll end up giving it away. (Matt Barlow)

Make sure you clean all the black 'fascia' out, with sand in the water is easiest, I usually scale and gut fish on the way back in on my back, then there's no messing around save for cleaning the blue black 'lining' all spinal column nervous and vertebral blood out..I've been served up a foul mullet from a suposedly reputable pub restaurant in Cockwood cos they didn't do this...Thats the best way, and FRESH is best, why catch more than you can eat, especially as I've no freezer!

Try the search button as there are pages of mullet recipes & cooking - preparation methods.

However there are certain ways to help you enjoy your catch - first is to bleed the fish as soon as you have it in your hands. You do this by cutting the gills, this kills the fish very quickly & releases a lot of blood at the same time.

Next up is to gut the fish asap, when you have your fish on dry land I would always suggest taking of the two fillets, skin the fillets & then remove the red lateral line.

This will leave only white meat in the best possible condition but unfortunately thick lipped grey mullet can be very unpredictable in flavour - some are mild & great tasting & some are very strong in taste!!
Bass are a favored fish with chefs & customers alike but not necessarily because they taste so good but because unlike TLG mullet they are consistent in flavour.
Big bass, small bass, deep water, shallow water they all taste the same = very good & very mild.
I would say that golden grey mullet are far more predictable in flavour & are in most cases superior to bass.....

I am in the market for a new torch (mine got smashed up recently when it fell onto road) I had a UK C8 rechargable. I want something better but I don't want to spend more than £155

Any suggestions - I know there is a thread on this but I can't find it - anyone point me in the right direction? Thanks a bunch,
James

Cheers guys lots of useful info there. The fish was dispatched pretty quickly with a knife to the brain. I always gut and scale my fish at the beach - the wife hates it when I do it in the kitchen and it makes the bin stink! Also I think it's nice to feed the crabs. Soon I as I got home it was frozen, will it be ok to remove the black fascia when I defrost it or is it already likely to to taste pretty bad?

In terms of torches I don't think you can beat a Princeton tec shockwave led for value for money.

Cheers

Matt

The black stuff is stomach lining, and yes remove it!! this is what stops the flesh from getting infected as mullet like to have their heads stuck up sewer pipes!

Would say mullet is one of my least favourite fish, a good sized wrasse tastes a lot better

Hmmmm here we go again with the big catches......

This crops up pretty much every year and every year its the same heads butting each other.

No ones breaking the law here. The UK has no bag limit but then again is it really necessary to purposely wind people up???????

Im no stranger to taking a few fish but I dont post the pictures up on an open forum for the whole world to see, instead I keep it to Facebook :)

Now we all love a healthy, civil debate so lets keep it like that

Fair enough but i dont happen to use facebook and dont know everybodys name to see the pics if i did? Why cant people celebrate their achievments with the rest of us??
will i have to ask everyone to pm me pics??

thought this was the place to share our experiences!

maybe only site supporters could access photos posted that being the case i would gladly pay!
just an idea!

I Never said people couldn't celebrate there achievements or that they couldn't post pictures, this site is packed full of pictures and dive experiences hundereds of pages, posts and threads of exactly that so you've lost me a bit there.....

Like I said this crops up every year, and its always the same load of bollocks which most of us are growing tired of.

On a more cheerful note!

Slipped out for a late one locally as my boy fell asleep unusually early for him after his bath, giving daddy a surprise window of opportunity!

IN response to your reply on catches,
He's got an interesting philosophy, if only we had such plentiful, untained by trawler fisherman waters and the unscrupulous river netters, we could all enjoy our waters as he in the video does..Other clips show the inexperienced bagging 10 kilo ones..Who over here would dare hold back on stoning one of them..
My rubbers went on first dive the other day and as I was out there later and on the wrong side of the tide than I would have prefered, I just went about business as usual for nearly two hours, but (fortunately) didn't see a thing. 7th outing in the last 2 months that nothing seen or got. Same sort of thing happened last year which ended up me shooting two undersized bass with one spear, as size wasn't familiar, everything looks large when you've not seen fish for a while.
Waste not two stoners, who were double the size of those godawful farmed size restaurant fish! I apologised to Neptune whilst tucking into to them, but accidents do happen..Doubt whether the fisheries folk would have the same opinion!
Nice catch Tribs...off to get some rubbers...to get in later
