Thanks mate, once i've fed the twins in the morning (about 0430) ill grab the new gear and head to the beach - can't wait, even if there are no fish it will be good to get in and have a nosey about!

Hi All,

Been flat out busy of late but have just had OfSted in so have got a huge monkey off my back in time for the new season!!! Glad to see the brave few leading the early path. Think I'll stick to the rods for a little while longer until the frosts have passed! Bloody cold outside my back door tonight 1'c on the Temp gauge.

F*ck me, there's no need for that. I knew you weren't referring to me, I was trying to be mildy amusing.

So was I (although, as I've clearly demonstrated, it doesn't always work for me in print).

No offence, or rudeness, intended :)

In early this morning, didn't go too far out but in the sheltered areas when the sun was out visibility was up to 5-6 m, saw a small school of very large mullet that i forgot to shoot :naughty i was so shocked to see them! Lots of crabs and a cormorant, other than that no other fish seen. If i had gone further out there may have been a few more but even the local wrasse were hiding today.

Well done for getting in

Couldn't agree more.
If you have something better to do than sit in your garden on a sunny afternoon with a glass of something whilst picking over spider crabs with friends, then you have a pretty good life!
Roll on the spider season.

Had a stroke of luck on Friday morning. Got in at 9am by 9.10 I had 2 lobsters then spent a further 40 mins looking but blanked totally. both lobbies were about 3m deep right off the beach and half out of their holes. Probably the first time and the last time this'll happen

Got in again yestarday morning in the same spot. water was 7*c. No crabs or lobster but did see my first Mullet and a Cuttle.

Tom I take the legs and claws off and steam them for ten minutes before placing them on the BBQ.

First time I tried them was at the Dorset BBQ a few years CRACKING STUFF!!!!!

Nope, straight out the steamer onto the BBQ. Im not a fan of reheating shellfish and avoid it if I can. :)

OK even more confused then!
Why do you cook the crab with two methods? what is the benefit of putting the already cooked crab on the BBQ?
Anyway I love spider crab too :)

The crab is only half cooked from the steamer so the BBQ finishes it off. Ive always done it his way to ensure its cooked.

I cook large spider crab claws and legs on the bbq. I don't boil or steam first. The only thing to be careful of is overcooking. The meat shrinks and when you open the claw it seems almost empty. Make sure the bbq is hot. I use hard wood logs.
My favourite is lobster split down the middle and then put cut side down onto the grill. Ginger and Chilli butter goes well.

Now we talking. Do you cook the claws separately or keep them attached to the 2 halves? Im just thinking about cooking times here...

Mart is sounds like ive gone a bit OTT with the cooking of the spiders. Will have a go with just cooking on the BBQ next time to see if its better :)

Scott,
If the claws aren't too big I keep them on the lobster. If they are big then I take them off and cook them on the grill separately. It is easy enough to put them on ahead of the lobster body so that the cooking time is adjusted.
Cooking shellfish in the shells is IMHO always better as the shell adds a fantastic flavour. Something to do with the complex make up fo the shells. Ask the Frenchman, he will explain all.
I will try and dig out some pictures of lobster on the bbq. Real food porn!
