spear fishing in pembrokeshire

Have been hearing reports of people catching decent sized bass in the haven too. So far this winter and spring vis has been sketchy. The forecast is perfect for awhile now though, just have to see if the fish have turned up yet. Will be trying out strumble head this weekend. Heard it's good for lobsters and has lots of seals so presumably lots of fish

weather is lush, i may try on monday to thurday at some places i recce over the winter ( on foot )

sorry this is late.
I tried all over north pembrokshire last weekend and the weather was perfect, however the viz was rubbish and you could see it from the cliffs, like vegatable soup. The north coast of st brides bay, facing south, had a huge swell to boot. So my kit went home dry.
the tides were big last week but are a bit tamer this weekend. maybe better this weekend.

regards to everyone

Piratesteve

Told you!!! No vis no fish! Not for a few weeks anyway! May go for an explore this weekend but without gun!

yeah I know.
But I was down there with the in laws anyway so it was not a wasted trip and I earned spearo tokens with the wife.

Hi folks, may i just offer a reminder that this year in addition to the Fish of the Month competition and Fish of the Year comp', there is also the species [speccie] hunt happening over the year. The discussion is here:
http://forums.deeperblue.com/uk-ireland/94073-f-o-m-f-o-y-discussion-thread-2012-a-2.html
and the few additional rules are given on each FoM entry page [basically enter the speccie hunt as you would for the fom - simple eh!].

I now realise that not everyone was aware of the speccie hunt, which is hopefully going to add some extra fun to the years fishing - there's no prizes - but it will be interesting to see who brings in the greatest variety of fish...

good luck!

went to the coast near abereiddy on saturday 31st. Visibility was very good, could see deep into the water and it was very overcast. other than that have not seen any good vis for ages. Hope it is still clear after this rain and wind

I was kayaking at Port Eynon head on the 1st and the water was very clear. Drifted right close to a very relaxed and curious seal too.

Definitely time to dust the kit off from the shed.

If anyone here is from around this end (Gower) let me know, maybe we can hook up. Our viz is often no good, but when it is there's some lovely spots here.

Hi Draenog,
I'll be up for that, I'm based in Cardiff so the Gower is a bit closer to me than pembrokeshire. maybe some weekday evenings too, when the days get really long and the tide is right.
regards,
PirateSteve.

I'll be up in st.davids next week from sunday, and if the vis is good enough the area i dive usually has a few bass aand mullet. My dad is not as fit as he used to be and whilst he can paddle around on top with the kayak he would much rather there be someone else in the water with me. If there's anone around solva/caerfai area drop me a pm.

went for a last minute rummage around st brides bay as it was a beautiful evening. Vis was quite good in patches, 5-6M. not very fishy, saw one wrasse flash by and one small pollack. nothing for the table. did see some sand eels and crabs on the move though so must be some predators about soon. Nice to be in again

Hi All
I got in last Sunday on the North coast of St Brides bay, near St Davids. the conditions were good for the time of year with good vis and no swell, bloody cold though!!! so I kept it short, about hour and half. I was in about 2 hours before high water. Very little fish action to begin with just the odd school of very small pollack however I was in about 6 metres when a shoal of plate size coal fish (2lb approx swam over the top of me. I took a shot but missed, which was a shame cos I think they taste better than Pollack. I didn't see any Bass. That didn't matter cos it was good to get in after a long winter and warm up for the season, proper.
Then the weather went pear shaped!!! everywhere on the north peninsular got blown out. even the most sheltered lee shores were rough with zero vis. This low pressure seems with us for a while so I think this weekend is out of the question. I hope it settles down in May.

Regards to you all

PirateSteve.

Good effort Steve, better luck with the coalfish next time.

hi mate,
i think i met you as i you were coming out and i was going in. i was the one with the same suit as you just about to do a write up but you've beat me to it. i saw a few small pollack whilst i was out but you were right the viz is rubbish and it's pretty nippy. I went fishing off the kayak later in the week as the viz turned to soup with the high winds coming in and i think i found the shoal you were talking about. had about 5 coalies in the space of 15 minutes, all good 2lb size over the reef in the middle left of the bay opposite the climbing wall, where there is usually a lobster pot.

vis has been pretty rubbish everywhere i've been recently, mostly south pembs. The mullet have arrived though, caught first one yesterday, unfortunately not with spear gun. Spider crabs have started to appear along North Pembs cost too, got one big male worth eating. So the summer species have appeared even if we can't actually see them yet.

Hi Aaron
I remember you,
Well done with the haul of coalies, good skills, must of been the camo wetsuit. maybe mine's faulty!!! Fillets of them taste bloody marvelous pan fried in olive oil and a bit of garlic and chilli. Hope you left some for me!. did you have bass sign???

regards
Steve.

nope, but spoke to a few anglers down at newgale and they said they caught a few schoolies in the last couple of weeks or so right up behind the breakers in 3-4ft of water. i didnt see or catch any fish that week other than those five coalies and a couple of lobster in a pot. i'm sure it will liven up a bit as we enter may. we got a load of alexanders which grow like a weed down near st.davids and chucked them on the bbq underneath the fish, sort of smoking them. tasted gorgeous.

Ha ha ha, You're not still blaming your wetsuit are you Steve? Anyway how are things? I'm moving up to bristol soon so a hop over the bridge will be in order. Even if daf isn't around in Cardiff any more I really should head over your way for some more diving this summer.
