spear fishing in pembrokeshire

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
Can't spell plaice
Can't tell the difference betweeen a plaice and a flounder
doesn't know the basic rules

And.... has been doing this for five years!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This kind of ignorance makes my blood boil i'm afraid!

Do i want to buddy up to go spearing.....
....erm .....NO

Geeez... calm down ben!

The guy didn't know the rules and made a typo. I would be great if rules for spearing were everywhere for people to see but the fact is that they're not.

A lot of people don't know the difference between plaice and flounder, I only found out this year. It's a flatty, it's tastes great - you don't need to know the full latin name to enjoy it ;)

Look Bluesheppy, at the very least use your time on the forum ( now you're here ) to learn the rules, learn your fish (your fishmonger is almost certainly wrong btw) and make some friends. You won't have many of us in Wales wanting to join you for a fishing trip if you can't show understanding of the basic ethics and principles.

Just so you know, most of us here are quite discrete about the places we fish and what we catch, spearfishers are not the only people who watch the forums. There are pleanty of anglers and commercial guys (legal and unlicenced) who either want to gather info on hotspots or gather ammunition to use against us .

Please be discrete- use PM function for discussions regarding specific catches or spots and please please stop fishing to "stock the freezer" or to SELL.

Any links to rules?
Just had a browse and couldn't see any referring to selling fish.
Many fishermen sell to pubs and restaurants along the coast, is this also illegal?

Going out soon so will just freeze them all

Many anglers who fish for bass recreationally, return most of their catches whilst some retain enough for their personal consumption. Rod and line fishing is however a method used to take bass within both the licenced and unlicenced commercial bass fishery. The only licences ever made available were issued to motorised fishing vessels for which the owners were able to provide evidence of having sold fish captured from that vessel. So currently, bass caught from an unlicenced motor vessel can not legally be sold.

However, bass caught from a vessel that is not motorised or caught from the shore, can be legally sold even though the activities are not currently licenced (no licences having been made available for such activities)

Bluesheppy,
spearing shellfish (lobsters crabs included), trout, salmon, seatrout etc, is illegal in the UK, as is selling of speared fish.
It's a grey area if spearing in bass nursery areas is illegal- but to my mind it shouldn't be done, neither would i spear in a marine reserve.....

Check the local size limits too- dont wan't you selling undersized plaice now do we! ;-)

from surfnspear's cefas report page 103

There was a 20% increase in the number of recreational sea bass anglers over the 1987-1992 period,
though numbers of shore anglers actually decreased (boat anglers increased). The popularity of
recreational sea bass angling also appeared to increase over the period in line with the improved status
of the species as a preferred target species. The estimates of recreational catches were remarkably
similar in 1987 and 1992, at 415 and 412 t respectively, and the 1992 survey reported that some
recreational anglers sold sea bass (illegally) for profit – possibly a total of 20-25 t each year.

So Cefas seems to say that selling and recreationally caught rod and line fish is illegal

I spoke to theerson who would buy it and they didn't realise either. Selling is no more.
Thanks for all the info. As for the over the top response earlier, it's a typical forum response to a disagreement so no hard feelings.

Back on topic -
Has anyone speared around the jetties in Pembs?
We usually stick to two beaches which provide a good supply of bass, flounder and the odd plaice ;-)
The jetties are popular by fishermen so may give them a try

Were you fishing an unknown beach on Thursday just gone? with a woman in a bikini?

Welcome to the forum bluesheppy!
The spearfishing rules do seem a bit bazaar, I live in the channel islands & it is quite legal to sell any fish caught from the shore or any fish caught from a licensed boat.
The method of capture is irrelevant but there are size limits & rules regarding nets & areas you are allowed to set them.

I was once told the English rules that prevent spearfishermen selling their catch stems from some ancient law based around poachers using spears to catch game fish!
