Got in today for a few hours and had a red letter day. Viz was great and there was loads for fish about ended the day with seven bass and one lobster the biggest bass went to about 7lb.
Put two straight on the barbi when I got home "food of the gods"
Best day spearfishing Ive had since I started.
Short vid of one of one of the bass in the kelp , the gopro wide always makes the gun look long and the fish small.

Got in for a day spearing on Friday . Viz was down to about 5m, spent
about a hour and a half at low water looking for lobsters and for the
life of me couldn't find any. Found lots of promising looking holes but
no lobsters , I don't know if this is down to over fishing or it I'm
just crap at finding them :head
Spent the next couple of hours hunting bass which were thin on the
ground today but had the privilege of watch the pollack smash into the
shoals of sandeel over the reef.
Only saw two bass on the whole swim and managed to bag this one.

hey all, new to this site and also new to spearing, just aquired a mares instinct pro 90, and looking for any advice , tips , tecniques.
im from st.davids hundreds of good spearing places locally for sure, anyone from over my way?? happy hunting...

Good to see you found the site instinctpro90! There are loads of posts hiding in the dark corners of these forums that are really useful for when you are first starting out.
During this summer I told myself that I will try to get in the sea at least once a week but that soon went out of the window after a mammoth workload and various commitments (i.e. being under the thumb). Having between a 4-5 round trip from Cardiff is also abit off putting but spotted an opportunity for a very quick dip last night.
As I was with the girlfriend, I was on the 9foot inflatable kayak which is not even stable when parked on dry land so it was rather fun paddling the mile to the destination.
The surface viz was started out at around 5metres but was reduced to 2metres the closer I got the rocks that were protecting the bay from the swell but after hitting the bottom at 11 metres vis was back up to 5metres or so. Saw a few nice schools of bass on the first 3-4 dives but didn't take any as I was reckoning on a lunker of a pollock after recent reports. It was slightly strange though as there were not even any small pollock about which I have never seen before at this spot.
On the 7th dive, I was down an dirty in the kelp as per norm when out of the distance a nice bass ghosted in. My bottom times have been pretty decent this year and as I felt good I pushed the dive time out just waiting for the bass to come close enough for the shot. The steal went just behind the gil plate, beneath the spine but unfortunately not a stone. Needless to say, it went ape and holed up in the kelp. It was abit of a ballache retrieving the fish as my RA only has about 8-9 metres of line on the reel which meant the gun was still a few metres below the surface...Keeping an eye on the gun with the reduced vis and the swell was a nerve racking experience! A dive later, the fish was safely flapping around in the kayak with the girlfriend which she promptly dispatched. Was happy with the result so headed in after 8 dives total for a nice bbq on the beach!

You seemed to have developed the same "girl in kayak, man in water" tactic that I have going on! Works pretty well doesn't it!
Sounds like you're fishing comfortably at some good depths now, impressive stuff! I was in about ~9m yesterday and wishing it was a little shallower, although hopefully with a few more dives I'll get a little better!
Looking forward to the end of the Summer when you're back up my way, I've ear-marked a few "interesting" looking spots for us to check out as well as the new 'Spot X' I told you about - hopefully going to dive that for the first time this coming weekend (fingers crossed on the weather!!!)
Checked out a little island about 500m offshore yesterday in the yak that had some scary-ass currents ripping round it, scared the willies out of me although it could make an epic dive at slack water, could do with your fish finder to check the depth!

Hah, I have adopted a new Crocs and Scrubs look! The lilac has now been tarnished with cuttlefish ink though! My dive times are approaching 1min20 on average after the dive reflec has kicked in but was pushing 1min40 a few weeks ago. At the end of last season they were around 1min50 (D4 - best buy EVER (second to the crocs)). Dive fitness and water time seems such a key point as I won't be able to get in anywhere near as much as last year 
My depth has come on as my confidence has grown but I don't set out to go deep, just dive to where the fish are.
Can't wait mate! Is that the little island out of the bay from where you were almost sick last year?? Looks epic!

Ha ha, yes mate, that's the one! The water really rips up and down the coast once the tide gets going but I recon if we timed it right we could get 30-45 mins of good diving in - would NOT want to be there when the tide was on though!!!
Would love a D4, have no idea what my times are - I would guess between 1:15 - 1:25
I'm never aiming to dive deep just for the sake of it, it's just nice to be able to have the ability to dive in all conditions, within reason! Really starting to feel more relaxed and confident in the water, hopefully I'll get a few more decent sessions in before the Summer's over!

i'm 14 and have been snorkelling with my dad for a while in pembs. i've been fishing wiuth rod and line since i was tiny so already know a lot about size limits on different fish speices. i've done a lot of research on the spearo website and have been on a 4 day snorkelling course which covered all the basic techniques on how to hold your breath and mask clearing ect. i've only ever snorkelled in carfai bay, st.davids and have seen a lot doggies, mackerel, huss, small pollack and wrasse there but suprisingly little bass. i've only ever seen 2 very contrasting bass. once when i swam round a big boulder and spooked a massive bass, and one tiny little schoolie of around 1lb or so. is carfai bay or anywhere around carfai bay a good place for spearfishing and if not, cxan anyone reccomend some good spots for beginners around st davids. im willing to travle outside of st.davids for any very good spots.

hey aaron , im at stdavids too, i would be interested to hear were u went on that snorkeling course if it was local??
i go spearing down carfai a fair bit gimme a shout if u need any info on the spot...
