Speargun Help!!

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
Why so Stranglove? [I've always thought carbon would be a good idea for a long gun - 120cm plus, where it should offer a significant weight/inertia advantage (esp. out of the water). On the other hand more mass would reduce recoil.]

Yes Mr. X less recoil was what I had in mind, longer gun , longer shots on smaller guns may be the recoil is less of a factor since the shoots are closer but you guys are better on giving advice them me (I think). But just like you one can get avantages with both carbon or Aluminum and I not recoment one or the other but what I had in mind when I've picked the HF is perhaps because of the shape of the barrel here is a longer gun that is easy to move arround !

I hope this is taken the right way, I certainly mean nothing by it.

The fact that theykilledkenny had to ask the question suggests that he hasn't all that much experience otherwise he would know what would be the gun of choice. Going on that as well as knowing what others use I think that would be the most sensible choice for its versatility and also being a little more user friendly and one that will help him progress faster. Admittedly that's a big assumption on my part but the fact that Marwan and Spaghetti agree (both being med hunters) makes me feel a little better about it.

I thought you were in Alaska BTW

Pastor, I was just trying to get your point of view on a longer gun, but the I also think the 100 is a very good lengh but I've never fish the med.

I am in Anchorage Alaska, but I am from Rio de Janeiro/Brazil, I go back every year for 4 weeks of spear fishing !

Sorry I meant that as to not offend tkk but he happily admits to being a beginner so no worries.
From Rio? Bummer, I'm sorry to hear that, lucky bugger rofl Surely there is some good hunting in the Anchorage area too?

Pastor no Problem thanks for the rep, the spear fishing here (AK) is OK, we don't have a lot of fish variety, so far it has being Rock Fish, Salmon and lingcod, the last one I just spot them in the water did not shot them because the area I was, killing them was illegal. The season is short and the water is often murky.

still wondering, if the 100 has a range of about 4 m, does that mean i can still penetrate larger fish even at a distance of 4 m??

Just live and see...
Of course you must try to get the closest you can to the fish, no matter how long is you gun. If you refer to larger mediterranean predators like amberjack, leerfish, bonitos and bluefish, shooting from a "borderline" distance is a bad idea. Don't shoot the big fish if they are at the edge of your gun range. Just watch the bait, take a correct position and tickle their curiosity: the big ones will come close to you (or simply ignore you).

sounds good, thanks... one last thing: id like to know what everyone here uses and for which conditions: which gun do you use most, what setup is on that gun, and what kind of fish you usually go after with it...also from what range do you usually shoot fish. ????????????????????????????????? another 'last' thing: some people mentioned choosing the 100 because it would be better for holes... i close to never shoot fish in holes, so should i still stick with the 100?? i just want to make sure, because those guns are not cheap and i want to get something that will last, and not making me regret not buying the 110 with more power and range to start with....so which would you buy (lets forget my inexperience for a moment)??

kenny you wont regret getting the 100, i believe it will suit more than 90% of your needs and honestly, if you feel that the fish you target CONSTANTLY are very big amberjacks, bonito, mackerel etc..., then your next gun wont be a 110, probably a 120...i mentioned the holes part...the 100 is not by any means a gun for hunting in holes, but in MY conditions i have used it in holes on some occasions but not regularly, the 75 or a 60 is more of a hole gun...

i have a double banded 110, twin 16mm bands and 6.75mm spear...its a very specialized gun, i use for a certain type of snaper we have here...to hunt them i have to lay down on the bottom (aspetto) for some time until they get close and then you shoot...from experience they tend to be just out of my range, hence i got the 110 for that specific use...

Marwan is right 100%.
Now you ask for some concepts. Here they roll:
110 or longer is the gun for "aspetto": shooting shy, distant fish from a static position.
75 to 90 are the common guns for "agguato", the dynamic action looking for fish in low visibility, shallow messy bottoms (for messy bottom I mean where it changes from high and low rocks, bits of flat sands, a kelp bed here and a rock there...you know it).
50/70 (band or pneumatic, with trident or 5 pronger) are the guns for holes or thick weed.
As you see a 100 is specialized for nothing, but "good" for everything.

Double wrap makes it more likely for tangling and more messy to reload: single wrap (3x shaft length) and a reel is the way to go.
Double wrap would be good for powered up longer guns with double bands, but this is not the case, is it?

..also from what range do you usually shoot fish. ?????????????????????????????????
A good spearo will often wait for the fish to come close. Sometimes they can come too close , between you and your spear tip. Sounds silly I know but it happens often for me with Bass when they come from behind, I have to wait for them to swim away a little before I can take the shot. A smaller gun is sometimes better. A 100cm gun will penetrate a decent Bass at 4m if the tip is sharp no problem.

another 'last' thing: some people mentioned choosing the 100 because it would be better for holes... i close to never shoot fish in holes, so should i still stick with the 100??
You already have a 75cm gun, that is perfect for holes. Trust what Marwan and Spaghetti are telling you, they have much experience :)

Ha ha, I was very slow with my answer to that rofl Hindsight is a wonderful thing (sometimes).Anyway, the sign of a true spearo, any thing that smells like a fish and he'll take a shot at it rofl

i just came up with another question that spaghetti can shake his head about:

what are all the band setups can i use with a 100 euro gun?? how do they compare??

if i use more than one band, how will the 2 wishbones (the metal ones)fit into the notches? one in the first, the other in second??

you have been asking many questions :), now its our turn :)
who killed kenny? and who's kenny ?

I like to use 110cm band gun with double 16mm bands. Two wraps... and carry 80cm gun on the float. All aspects covered:)

If the conditions are suitable for aspetto i use 110cm double band gun for all other types of fishing i use 80cm. I can shoot even small sargo with double banded 110cm speargun the problem is you don't want to use it much on rocky areas if you have expensive shaft on it.
