Speaking of wetsuits. What thickness are you guys wearing?
I'm looking at buying a 7mm Bare Elastek from Sharky's because they've got them for a pretty good price right now. They've also got the matching vest with hood so I'm considering that as well. Is 7mm the right thickness? Is buying the hooded vest overkill?
My idea is to use both pieces in the spring (along with gloves and socks) and then use one or the other (with or without gloves and socks) as the water temperature rises.

I use an old one piece 3mm (back zipper) with 3mm gloves, hood and socks in the summer months and i use a two piece open cell 5mm with 3mm boots over the 3mm socks and 5mm gloves for the colder months... keeps me warm enough. It all depends on your fat percentage. I have a buddy that trains at the pool with me that's ripped and physically fit and wears a 2mm shorty but starts shaking from cold after an hour. Where I go with just shorts and last an hour and a half before starting to shiver. So it really depends on your physiology... just remember the thicker u go the more weights you'll need and something else to keep in mind is zippers leak!

What do you mean by "zippers leak"? I mean, I guess the statement is pretty self-explanatory, but what are you trying to tell me? Is there a certain kind of suit I should look for/avoid that has leaky zippers? Should I take leaky zippers into account when figuring out how warm I want to be?

I just got a new Mako 5mm, made with the yamamoto rubber, SWEET suit, 3mm gloves and boots, I'm going to invest in a 3mm suit though as well, likely the gatku, cause I love the camo pattern 
and Schlergs, likely a suit with zero zippers would be best for no leaking.
last summer, ( I was not diving) the river here reached 79f....crazy stuff.

yeah, seems real good, it is the brand new model with the reef camo, apparently I was the first Canuck to get one 
I had never had an open cell suit, it was interesting to say the least to get it on!
the suit slip I got with it was a godsend.
Mako has great service, after much looking, I'm going to get a predator 2g railgun , 90cm, made by them, seems like a great gun for a good price.

just be careful on the length... I say this because i grew up hunting in high visibility with long spearguns in europe and when it came time to buy my first gun here in canada i never took in account the not always ideal visibility factor that we have. I instantly bought a 95cm cause that was the best of both worlds where i came from only to realize that i could only use it on the clearest days and then had to purchase a second gun (60cm) which became my primary one. Depending on the day i sometimes cant see the end of my 60cm speargun which makes my 95cm completely useless in those conditions... something to keep in mind.

At Freedive Toronto we use Aqualand wetsuits and have no complaints. Custom made for less that $250!
Scuba shops are not really that helpful, I went to some around here and in ottawa, they basically cater to bubblers only
Call Mako, or email them, ask for Brad, he set me up with my suit, and I'm a tricky fit because my job as a treeclimbing arborist has me small in some places, like my waist, over developed other places, like my back.
he told me to go a size up from what the chart said would fit, I'm glad he did
plus the suits are made from some of the best rubber out there, Yamamoto.

We have a Greek member that talked to the owner and we've been getting these suits ever since!
I think it's also the quickest you can get a custom suit. Sometimes in as little as 2 weeks!

I'm now leaning towards a custom-made wetsuit. Definitely seems like the only way to go to get a good fit. Plus, it doesn't seem much more expensive (if at all). I am seriously considering the Aqualand suit that Apneaddict recommended (I actually sent you a PM to get some advice) because for that price you'd be crazy to buy an off-the-rack wetsuit.
I've sent Aqualand one email so far. They were very quick to respond and provided the exact info I wanted. So far, so good. I'll keep you guys posted.

Still haven't ordered my wetsuit (or anything else for that matter) yet so it looks like I won't be getting in the water until closer to June. My girlfriend and I just can't seem to find the time to measure ourselves properly. Hoping to do it this week and have our suits in 2-3 weeks. The rest of the gear will come fairly quickly once I order it.
