"starfins" hyper

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
Degrees fahrenheid, Kelvin, Celcius? or maybe the number of Freemason degrees? ;)

Could you get a WW blade with Rocketfins or starfins pockets?

Why would you want to do that? Starfins blades are in a class of their own. I had a WW glide and after two starfins I must say that I like starfin blades much more.

Starfins blades are excellent - best I've used. Alex tests each fin thoroughly - and makes changes or builds a completely new fin sometimes if he is not satisfied.

Just wondering thats all. My favorite fin was a WW which i loved the feel of the fin and some friends have some Rocketfins which i love the build quality and the pockets but not realy the blade feel. Would it be wrong to ask a manufacturer to use different blades as far as i know most of them know each other.
Nat..

Yes Watts ,
we really all know each other ! We're doing one thing ;-) Many years later I can say that it is important not only glass and not just quality materials, and much more important than right made calculations! + a lot of small nuances, and then fins will work right!

Given the successful fins Alex made, maybe you could give Alex your detailed description of the blade you got and love. On the other hand I must say that the footpocket itself has also a big influence how the fin feels.

For instance I got a soft rubber footpocket on a medium stiffness blade (not a Starfins fin btw) , resulting in smooth action and a soft feeling fin.

I will just say that the more I use my latest fin - with the 28 degree angle - the more I love it! I can do 25m in 3 kicks with full lungs - two if half empty. The action of the fin is very efficient and, as I have mentioned, very well tuned for my body. We have several different fins to play with here and these new Starfins definitely have the best performance. More than this is the very consistent and precise tuning and fit - as well as quality of materials and workmanship.

Thanks for the replys. Alex have you any experience with wider fins or longer fins and how they would effect a slower kick with long glide. Has anyone experimented with this for freediving not finswimming? The angle of the pockets is not an issue for me as ive got flexable ankles from nofins stretches.
I dont know what your blades feel like but the whole fin looks the same as my friends rocketfins and i find those blades not as smooth as waterways.
Would you make me a monofin with a waterway blade? :inlove

Cheers Nat.

Yes, of course we did different versions and sizes blades ! Now we do best option ! Dimensions and shape are not always the same ! The size depends on many parameters of the customer, although the picture may look alike, but it is not so !
Yes, of course, we can use WW blades - we use them from time to time. We find and use the best materials in our fins and generally for our products !

Hi Alex,

Thanks again for the monofin you just build for me, used it 3 times now and it is really SPOT ON! First time on my feet in 20 minutes before i had to take it off.. PERFECT fit :)

Power and glide is better then what i hawe ever tryed before so i'm sure to find new PB in the near future.

WERY happy with the fin, GOOD JOB ALEX :)

Best Regards

Hi Alex soory for buggin you but i was just on your site and saw that many of the monofins have very different blade variations. Some with horizontal, zig zag and various sorts of thinning of the blade whats up with that? http://starfins.com/eng/products/15/ Cool site by the way.

Hi Watts,
Indeed we have a few types of fiberglass. They are all originally made the factory, only some of them were pre-calculated and ready to use (horizontal stripes), and others we are doing on their own sketch - our creativity (vertical edge or oth.)! First made by overlaying layer upon layer of pressure, the latter on the contrary - by removing layers from the base.

4 of us in Freedive Toronto ordered Starfins hypers. Here is my review: (My baseline for comparison is a basic Waterways model 2, medium stiffness)

Fit: the back-strap on the footpocket is too big. The foot fits ok, but there is extra length in the strap.

I had asked for :45 mins of comfortable wearing. It is loose, so that I could wear it forever. The looseness causes rubbing on my feet and a loss of power, as the fin moves around and needs to be addressed somehow.

A 3mm sock fills things in, but makes the footbed a bit tight. Maybe 2mm will be fine. I have emailed Alex re: fit and to see if the heel-strap can be shortened. I had wanted it sized for no socks, as it is better hydrodynamics for DYN and less compression for depth / CWT.

Another new Starfins owner was at the pool too an his heel-strap fit a lot tighter than mine. I was jealous.

Buoyancy: I ordered a bit positively buoyant - and it is.

Fin blade action: extremely organic. It looks like an aquatic mammals fin with more bend in the middle and less near the wings.

It loads up really well and almost "springs" to unload. Nice and progressive.

Left / right foot / leg imbalance is really magnified, as compared to the waterways.

Glide: I got 10 more ft of glide on a 2-kick input. I still have to flex my calves to get a good glide, but it is worth it. My speed after 2 kicks is significantly faster.

Because the fin has a 30* angle, I am no longer being "cantilevered" during the glide. With the waterways model 2, I the fin (with legs extended) or my thighs (with legs slightly bent) would pitch my upper body down slightly during the glide. With perfect weighting, I would drift towards the pool bottom in the shallow end. To compensate, I took .5 lbs off of my neckweight. This is no longer needed with the angled Starfins.

Push-off: it is more difficult to push off hard from the wall with the 30* footpocket angle. Any imbalance in the push-off is magnified with more slip-angle, as there is less of a blade-angle to slow you down and straighten you out.

# of kicks:
My previous best (25m) with the Waterways fin was a push off and 3 hard double kicks with a glide to stop. With the Starfins, I was able to do a push off and 2 hard double kicks gliding to a stop.

I was also able to push off and do 4 single kicks easily.

For a "normal" pace, I was previously able to do 25m with a push off and 3.5 double kicks.

With the Starfins, I was able to do 3 double kicks.

Interesting that you see better performance even with the fin being loose.

Mine also is quite loose (asked for it that way) and I can report almost identical performance. Except I don't really push off - just dive and bring the fin up smartly.

I am able to do 25s on 3 kicks (not double) with full lungs and no weights - or on one if I go FRC to be neutral. (when the pool is quiet and I have a center lane - i.e.; no current and do everything perfectly :) ) Of course this last is a very slow 25 - usually 40+ seconds. I'm also doing Yards rather than meters.

I agree with your evaluation of the blade as well.

To clarify - I saw better performance when I stuffed my 3mm socked feet in to take up the slack.

One of my dive buddies had is sized for socks. I think Alex sent along a pair of 2 mil fin socks. Seems to work quite well for him.

That's a good idea to freedivers ordered for a fin and a pair of neopren socks after thought to use them or not ! After all, they are like two hamburgers ;)

By the way. This year ends and I would like to highlight some of the results freedivers who have purchased our Starfins hyper shortly before the competition.

Andrey Matveenko performed at the World Championships in Spain (Tenerife).
5th place - making the final 212 meters DYN

Two freedivers from Poland :
Emilia Biala was second in DYN. She did 203 m on last World Championship !

Mateush Mallina 2nd place-106M FIM
And a few weeks ago he made a 225 DYN - Poland NR!!!
Congratulations!!!!!!!!!!
