When I first saw this poll, I thought to myself that I should ask anyone who have a 7+ static to post, so everyone could "jump on him" with a ton of questions.

Now when I see your 8+ (higher than world record), I don't even know where to begin with the questions...

Make it wasy on all of us Karl, start spilling....... :)

Congratulations Karl. That's a big number. When you respond, will you please include height, weight and lung volume?
Aloha
Bill

What now

hi

8:12 wet what the hell is goin on. Out of all the guys Eric mentioned I think Martins 8:06 is the wr. If you were to do your times in front of judges it would be New WR. Bill before Karl answers I want to have a go at his dimensions height : 178cm, weight 68 Kilos, lung volume : 6.8L.

cheers

ps Karl you da man

normal guy

Hi all,
He's my brother, and his dimensions aren't that:
Weight= 65 kgs
Height= 168 mts
Vital Capacity=6.8 L (different from total pulmonary capacity)

That performance (8' 12") was wet.
He's not so good writing in english, so I'll tell if he wants that I translate the answers

!Outstanding! Congrats amigo....Karl, we are behind you to go for the WR. I hope you can get in front of a judge and take the title.
Buena suerta,
Erik Y.

This thread reminds of me of an idea I had last year (2001) when I started training for my first competition. I lived in inland Canada with no training partner, so I started a thread about my training which I would update every few days. I had 2 reasons: the first, because some people were interested, and the second, to help inspire me in a competitive manner. It worked, and though I had no training partner for any event, I did manage to tie Eric F's Canadian static record.
What I'm getting at is that maybe we could use this thread (or another) as a competitive "banner" whereby we can inspire each other to new hights by posting any new PB's in static....this is not boasting: those of us that are interested in achieving new limits are usually very supportive of other competitors achievements.....as anyone that has been to a freediving competition will agree. Eric F was not intimidated by my performance; in fact after that we became good friends and he shared tons of personal research with me that has improved my diving immensely.
So, I hereby throw down the glove, and challenge all of us to a static duel, which will never end!
I still don't have a training partner, and I need all of you, so step up.
Cheers,
Erik Young

18 AND UNDER CATEGORY

can there be an 18 and under category for those of us that cant compete yet?

i like erik's idea, i think a little friendly competition would do no harm, as long as everyone did everything safely

Thanks Frank
All these young divers with 8 liter lungs and less than 70 kilo of body mass, I think I can see my problem. I'm working on the rules for a new contest that I can win. Let's see;
constant in meters+static in deci-minutes+dynamic/2+age should give me a chance. Too bad for Thin-air but heck, you didn't expect me to play fair did you Vince?
Aloha
Bill

AS THEY SAY....

if its a fair fight you did something wrong :naughty

but what is a deci-minute? (im guessing it means a tenth of a minute or 6 seconds...but i have never heard of it)

and bill, i think you still got me beat im all three :head

ps. i'm now at 72kg and my lung volume (at my last "measurement" - which isnt very precise - was 5.5l + residual)

Body mass

Hi

72kg geez, I seem to be total light weight around here at 180cm, 60kg and still getting lighter, lung volume 4.? litres. In the last few months I loose weight by just doin nothing.

cheers

ps when I get a stop watch I will be able to time statics again

Erik , your static challenge is a great idea :king
Perhaps this way I can finally find the motivation to train again . Gotta do SOMETHING before the dreaded 40's set in .
Perhaps you could start a new thread for it and try to drum up more participants .
I will officially start posting results from 1st Dec. if we get this going , need a week to get the smoke out of my lungs ...:yack
I hope this takes off , at least being in such poor condition means I can only improve .

BTW ; felicitaciones Karl , que bueno !

Here is the results of a lung volume test that was done on me about 2 weeks ago by a group of specialist (Labman) here in Hawaii. These are averaged from people my age 38 and weight 78kg and height 182cm.

Spirometry Pred. Actual
FVC = 5.78 6.93
FEF = 8.47 10.84

Lung Volume Pred. Actual Actual w/Packing
SVC = 5.61 6.98 9.05
TLC = 7.58 9.04 13.24

LUNG CAPACITY

Thing is, my brain capacity is too limited to hold all those abbreviations.

DSV - I know what THAT means, but could you spell out and
explain the others.

Some of those numbers look very big ! Let's see:

very big . . . .very big . . . ver 'big . .. verbig . ... (Am I getting warm ?)

hi DSV

Same here I don't really understand what all those letters mean but from the numbers it seems that you have a very good set of lungs, lots better than me. The biggest lungs ive heard of were Hubert Mairs (spelling) which were 10L without packing. Abri from deeperblue did have 8.3L without packing.

cheers

Lung Stuff

Sorry guys,

I have a whole list of numbers and abbr. that I'm not sure of. What I do know is:

FVC: Forced Vital Capacity, the amount of air you can forcefully blow out. 6.93

SVC: Is the same as VC, Vital Capacity, the max amount of air that can be inhale after a full exhalation. 6.98

TLC: Total Lung Capacity, is the max volume of air in the lungs at the end of a max inhalation. 9.04

The numbers are litres.

Under the Lung Volume I wrote 2 lines of number with 3 columns.

First is the predicted amount for normal individuals, my age, my height and my weight.

Second is my actual capacity in litres.

Third is my actual capacity after packing in litres.

Remember I'm not a doctor so please forgive me if I have some info wrong.

I was very amazed to see these numbers and during the tests the doctor told me that I kept breaking his machine.:duh

Anyway it's cool stuff to know. I can't believe it.

Amazing !

I'm still not certain I get the difference between SVC and TLC.

If SVC is the volume you can inhale after a full exhalation, and TLC
is total lung capacity, then it must be that:

Amazing !

I'm still not certain I get the difference between SVC and TLC.

If SVC is the volume you can inhale after a full exhalation, and TLC is Total Lung Capacity, then it must be that:

TLC = SVC + RESIDUAL VOLUME

..where Residual Volume is the air left in the lungs after the
"full" exhalation, in other words,

RESIDUAL VOLUME = TLC - SVC

Right ? So it must be that Residual Volume is estimated with
some formula or other, right ?

I used to know this stuff cold ! Is this more or less right ?

The SVC just measures the amount of air exhaled.
TLC measures the SVC + the RLV Residual Lung Volume to get the sum.

Beyond this explaination please confer a doctor.:D

DSV

And what are you doing up so late Paul?;)

TLC

What AM I doing up so late ? Scribble, scribble, scribble, another great fat book, Deron.

With respect to those airbags of yours, I think we should call you
Deron Verybig. I mean, there's enough there for 2 regular guys.
