Good news! New static PB!

6 mins 0 sec.
(08/07/2004)

My goal was to get to 6+ by the end of the year but it came a bit yearlier..
This time I stopped on 6 mins for a clean PB, not like a couple of months ago when I scared my wife when I lost control of time and blacked out.
I feel there's more room for improvements though.
Will start training the static tables to see if it helps.
All the best to everyone!

Congratulations Fabio!

It's great to hear of your progress. Let us know if the tables help.

Lucia

Hi, i just got my PB with a static time of 1:36... i know it's nothing to brag about, my previous best was about 1:10. I haven't done any training though, besides doing a few dives here and there. I was still happy with the improvement though. I just need to work on keeping my bottom times. I'm usually a little timid once i reach 30 ft. because i want to make sure i can reach the surface fine, so i usually just go down and up. I don't have a weightbelt though, so i usually just let the air in my lungs float me to the surface from 30 ft. which is kind of a fun ride

New PB! (After 10 days of my previous one)
6 min 10 sec.
It was interesting how the body reacts to different times of the day and situations..
Earlier on the day I had a nap and after I woke up I thought... perfect to try as I'm quite relaxed. Result: just getting past 5 mins was a strugle.
I forgot about it doing everything normal during the day including a run in the park with my wife and now just before going to sleep I tried again.
On the 4th trial I broke my PB doing 6:10. And by this trial I felt there's a lot of room for improvement. I did not push to a samba or anything like that. But instead I had a clear vision of my own face as my wife put a mirror in front of my face and said.. "have a look at your face... does it look a healthy thing to you? )"
In the near future I'll try to monitor blood pressure, body temperature... just the basics because for now I don't have money to invest on capnographs, oximeters, spirometers..
Will try to find a physiological pattern for good and bad performances.
Will go to sleep now.
All the best to everyone!

Fortunately nobody has ever done that to me - putting a mirror in front of me so I can see my exhausted, blue face after a max static!

Anyway, great times!

Yes fabio that's normal--

but the danger is when we have Bitterness in our heart

Mc Millen says" The minute we beging hating someone,we become his salve. Hatred holds us captive

According to medical researcher verbal expression of animosity toward other call forth certain hormones from the pituitary adrenal, thyroid and other glands, an excess of wich cause disease

If I had the mirror in front of my face after my max static it would've been ok, but it was during my contractions, which did not help too much my concentration.
I wanted to laugh but at the same time was struggling with the contractions.

I finally decided to look at myself in the mirror during a static - it wasn't a PB, or even close to one, but I wanted to know how awful it looks! It didn't actually look that bad - even when it started getting really difficult, there was nothing about my face that showed the effort, except the blue lips.

Now I understand why my buddies have sometimes said that a static/dynamic I did looked really easy, as if I could have done a lot more, when in fact it was very difficult for me.

Hello everyone,

I'm a new member but I've been lurking here for quite some time and got lots of valuable info.

I'm really new to freediving and I started doing those static tables this week, my PB went from 2:30 to 3:50. I think the sudden jump probably has alot to do with how relaxed I was.

This site rocks!

All this talk of mirrors in front of faces reminds me of my recent "performance" in the Canadian Nationals. Afterwards, I enjoyed the singular pleasure of watching a video of myself blow all the air out of my lungs and black out after only 4:34, a time I had been doing regularly in training. Never having been very photogenic to begin with, in the video I possessed all the charm of a cold, wet noodle, draped in the disappointed (yet understanding) arms of the safeties and judges, halfway out of the pool, jaw open and listing awkwardly to one side. As if it hadn't been glorious enough already, I opened my eyes a few seconds later and proudly flashed the okay signal with aplomb, only to wonder why my mask is off and people are holding onto me. Not a pretty sight; am glad there are no mirrors available while I'm doing statics.

Can't wait for the next competition!

Alein, that's the funniest thing I've read on DeeperBlue in a long time!

That's the trouble with competitions, you get to see yourself afterwards!

I did something similar, fortunately not on video. After a dramatic samba, I recovered for a few seconds, then passed out again on my buddy. When he was sure that I had finished the whole thing, he told me that I had just had a bit of a samba. I asked "What did I do?" and he said "You entertained us!"

Although I sometimes laugh at accidents, I'm really very careful.

Funny, the turning blue thing is what ended my PB dry static.
I ran in the room my wife was sleeping in and frantically showed
her my watch. She started crying and thought I was choking,
so I had to talk to tell her I was OK. Now she knows the OK sign.

dry vs wet

Dry vs wet statics:

I was wondering if right after doing heavy weights, because your body is exhausted your static would be better or worse than when your body is relaxed. The reason I’m asking that is because I didn’t have access to the swimming pool until a while ago and could only practice dry statics.
Well, I’ve been improving a lot and my new PB is on 6:10 and I feel I can improve that. (the conditions I explained in the previous tread.. . Wife with a mirror in front of my face…
So I thought.. can I reproduce these times in the pool? I know I’m putting more variables in the equation but that was the only time I had to try. Right after the gym workout. Trained shoulders, legs and abs to exhaustion (1.5 hours in total). 5 mins after this workout I went to the pool and tried some statics. I did 4:30 in the third trial but know it would be really hard to get to 5 mins.
I felt I had one advantage which was being able to switch off my mind better due to the tiredness and one disadvantage which was the tiredness of my body itself.
My question is:
In these conditions, should I be able to do good times or bad times were really expected? I was wondering if my statics in the pool would match my dry ones. One thing I felt easier was to hold the contractions. Feel more comfortable in the water. I’m not sure if in the same conditions I’d be able to do a 4:30 to 5 dry (with my body aching from the training of 2 days ago and just after my training session)…or maybe my wet static is really better than my dry one considering the conditions I mentioned above…
Well, no point in just wondering. I have more access to the pool now. I will try and let you know afterwards..
You must be thinking.. All this story to tell us he’s going to try and see if his dry times matches his wet ones?
It must be the effect of hypoxia in my brain
Any ideas and comments are welcome.
All the best to everyone

Fabio,
in my experience, I do better statics when I have not done too much exercising. I have tried doing static after strenuous activity and a have not been able to even come close to what I know I'm capable of doing.
As far as wet vs dry. I found that wet statics are better and easier to do but give yourself some time to get used to doing wet statics.
I was doing 7min dry statics and would only be able to do 5:30 wet statics when I first started. Now, I much preffer wet statics as my contractions are delayed considerably and have no desire to do them dry. Beside, it's wet statics that count in competitions.

6:10, way to go!

Cheers,

Luc

Thanks for your reply.
Just another thing..
Does it make a lot of difference wearing a wetsuit?
I feel really hot, even sweat when doing dry statics when having my contractions but comfortable whilst ventilating whereas in the pool I was feeling cold (almost shivering) when ventilating but more comfortable whilst having contractions with my body being cooled down. The temperature of the water was about 20Celsius.
I’m wondering if one stage compensates the other..
Wetsuit on: comfortable ventilation + start of breath hold but feeling hot when having contractions
Without wetsuit: feeling cold when ventilating and start of breath hold but feeling more comfortable when having contractions.
I’d would still stick to the first option but don’t really know because I don’t have a wetsuit yet.
All the best

Fabio,
I think you will have to find out what works best for you. Personaly, I find that the moment I start to get cold, my statics start to fall. If I'm shivering at all, I can pretty much expect that it will take 1 minute off of my static.
Unlike other top athletes here in Vancouver, I don't have a problem with overheating. I used to do dry statics in the comfort of my bed with a very warm duvet cover and was just comfotable.
I wear a 5mm suit in the pool and at the moment it is still ok. But last year when I did my P.B. of 7:48 I had to add hot water in my suit to keep from shivering.
Also, I try to fast for 6 to 8 hours prior to doing a static. It seems to work for me.
I don't do more than 30 seconds of purging during my last breath-up.
Again, find out what works best for you. You seem to be doing very well. Keep a log of every static you do including when your contractions start.

Cheers,

Luc
