Sussex report 2008

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
If anyone wants to meet members of the Sussex spearfishing club and get to know other spearfishermen in the area, we are having a meeting next week, likely to be in either Brighton or Shoreham. The Sussex spearfishing club is celebrating forty years in existence this year. PM me for more details.

regards Kev

Looking forward to a good season. Spent most of the Winter shooting woodies! Water is flat today but still looks very dull!

i know its so annoying the sea has been very calm now for several days but is still murky.
has anyone had a look at the marina, dont know what the vis will be like over there, probably not much better.
one good thing though the winds are either supposed to stay down or stay northerly so it will stay calm and hopefully clear, eventually!

how long does it usually take for the sea to clear after a storm i dont remember it taking this long last year especially with all the calm weather we have been having. maybe its because the weather has been so rough these last few monthes its mixed the sea up a lot, rofl

Out last night for my first dive of the season, went a fished a local mark with Eric Aqua. Conditions were good with a water temperature of 8oc, viz not bad approximately 4-5m. There was not a lot to be seen except some huge Wrasse and some even bigger Congers, not a bass or any thing else edible in-sight. Still it was a good dive and went well for the first of the season. Things can only get better, I hear that local fishermen have had some bream in there nets. Thanks to Eric for the ride out, the boat went very well.

Yes I cought bream, red mullet, sole, plaice, cuttle, skate, bass and cod last Thursday Kev. The bass have been a nice size too (not with a speargun i'm sorry to say)

Water on the east side of the marina is looking good today. Nice and clear. Gonna wait till I get my new camo Elios before going in, or maybe wait till the fish arrive.

Noticed that the lobster pots have been put out this week too.

i finally went out today around the east arm of the marina, vis was ok about 2 - 3 meters, but dropped the further i went out.
i was suprised to come across an ok sized sole, bit early for themi know but when i got it up i noticed that someting had taken a clean bit out of its tail, anyone have any ideas what it could be, a tope maybe? will have that for dinner!
hoping to try the palace pier tommorow as the vis was not very good there today, thats why i went to the marina, anyway a really good day.
i also noticed that the lobster pots have been put out for a while captain j, i am gonna have a proper look for them tommorow.

how big where the congers kev, how far out did you go?

captain j i remember you saying at the beggining of last winter that you brought a elios black shadow wetsuit, how come you buying a new wetsuit already?

josh

Hi jwells, It was probably a cuttle fish that took a bite out of your sole. Glad to see you finally got out there, well done.

Yep, I did buy an Elios Black Shadow, its 6mm and was really bought more for Scuba than Spearo. Awesome suit!

The new cammo from Elios looks like it'll work really well around the Marina/Rottingdean area, I'm going for a 5mm open cell.

You can see it here if you scroll to the bottom of the page to new camo : News

Its probably been asked before but i will ask again :p

If i want a suit that doesnt require lubing to get on, but will keep me warm and is durable what am i loooking for?

ie: open cell?
lined?
nylon?

Any help is appreciated and sry for hijacking thread :p

The Elios Black Shadow has a coating on the inside that makes it very easy to get on and off compared to an open cell suit.

The lining itself is quite durable. The outside of the suit is lined and very durable.

I think the Black Shadow comes into its own in thicker material i,e 6mm is obviously less flexible than 5mm or 3mm.

hey captain j yeah i went again today at the marina again, vis was good 3 -4 meters in places but dropped further out to about 2 meters. caught nothing and saw nothing apart from a shoal of smelt and a small shoal of whitebait. was a nice day though and enjoyed it,
i am thinking of getting up super early tommorow morning and going in for a bit before the wind picks up if its possible.

oh and captain j your new suit looks really nice,
josh

Well, I couldn't wait any longer to get my new gear wet so i went in. Vis was crap, no fish seen, couldn't see the end of my gun most of the time. Only a shore dive but i'm glad i went. 9degrees C and i didn't feel the water through the suit at all thanks to Elios :D

haha i told you spear4food, my omer suit was sooo warm today i did not even get any water in it haha. well done for getting in though spear4food, still a bit early but keep going and you will start to see the fish!
winds picking up for a couple of days tommorow thats why i am going early hopefully.
but its calming down again next tuesday/wednesday so thats good, lets just hope these few days of wind dont stir the sea up to much!

It was only a suit and weight test off Worthing beach Josh, however, I didn't expect the water to be that mucky and hoped to bring back my tea in the bargin. Next time it'll be different i'm sure.
