Sussex Spearing 2012

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 90 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.

Yep, no big fish today, exept of couple of Eels.
But at least some exercise, after 2 weeks of weather.
I liked that spot Nick, generaly clearer than around Pier.
Lets hope, that upcoming bad weather want lats too long ;)

Not sure Foxfish,
Just seen it passing by ... I'd say Silver Eel around 2ft.
They are bright silver/gold collor, with small head and narrow mouth.
I'm seeing them often in Brighton.

I dived the west pier last summer one day and there were hundreds of silver eels everywhere you looked. I didn't think there was much sport associated with taking one because they don't mind you going right up to them with a spear although I have occasionally eaten eel and it's pretty tasty.

That day I came home with a nice lobster having seen mullet, bream, mackerel and bass so I couldn't complain!

Just goes to show as soon as you can see the end of the spear Sussex spearing is ready to rival anywhere else!

Bass off Scotland? Interesting. I'd read they were getting further north but thought they were rarely seen there (perhaps just a rumour spread by fishermen in Scotland :D).

The status of eel remains critical and urgent action is needed. ICES reiterates its previous advice that all anthropogenic mortality (e.g. recreational and commercial fishing, hydropower, pollution) affecting production and escapement of eels should be reduced to as close to zero as possible until there is clear evidence that both recruitment and the adult stock are increasing.
Given the current record-low abundance of glass eels, ICES reiterates its concern that glass eel stocking programmes are unlikely to contribute to the recovery of the European eel stock in a substantial manner.

Hmmmm, that's what I thought. Along with the fact that you'd clearly have a fight on your hands if you put a spear through one and they are very snakey which I don't much like! It was pretty odd with so many in the water, I kept turning round and finding them sat on my back and sweeping past my head. Disconcerting when you aren't expecting it!

I know they've been tagging the bigger eels to find where in their migration path to be sargasso sea they are getting killed because their numbers have declined a lot.
However, that decline is not evident on the Sussex coast in summer!

Here's hoping the good weather clears some viz for the weekend.

I'll be there! Can't wait. My Dad was a Guernseyman and I used to spend every summer down at Vazon and Cobo, so I am really really looking forward to getting back on the island again. Woohoo!

yes mr x, theres heaps of them up there, the guys i went with are all anglers and they go spinning for them every year about this sort of time and have good luck, i jumped in the water and was surrounded by bass everyday once i got the spots worked out. il be heading back up there in September hopefully better equipped with another underwater housing, (mine flooded on this trip!!) and to hunt out the double figure bass that kept hovering just out of reach!!

iv managed to get photos on facebook, but my comp skills dont stetch far enough to getting pics up on here!!

as for guernsey im seriously thinking about it, but costs are looking pretty high to get out there, plus i only have a van and i read somewhere that makes my life even harder to get there??

Liam I just had a look at the Condor time table for the fast ferry from Pool to Guernsey.
On the fish in weekend dates they are offering ... Saturday the 4th of August leaving pool at 5am, arriving in Guernsey at 8am, then leaving Guernsey the next day at 9.45pm price £65 return.
That would mean two full days in Guernsey, with just one nights accommodation to find.
If folk are prepared to rough it a bit - there is plenty of room to camp on my lawn!

really? thanks foxfish, il have a proper look into it over the next couple of days, if i can make it il be coming on the friday and probally head home on the sun. as for accomodation, i have my swag bag so i can kip anywhere!!

I'm afraid, that Sussex coast is hopeless this season

* Tue 26/06 High tide @ 3:30am-5:30am: Brighton Palace pier + west off Marina
- flat sea, vis. 1ft on surface /2ft in middle /4inch at bottom in 2-7m

* Thu 28/06 High tide @ 6:00am-10:00am: Brighton West pier + west off Marina
- low swell, vis. 5ft on surface /4ft in middle /2ft at bottom in 4-8m

* Toady the WEATHER is back again !

... Am I just wasting my time and energy down there?
... Should I just sit on my *** in London and keep dreaming about freediving & spearfishing on-line?
