The Outlet 2008

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
No promises on how well this will turn out as it's my first attempt at putting together a video and posting it on You tube.

I had a fun time making it, but my wife is already sick of the song- because I work so darn slow and had to play it over and over again to try and make any sense of it. rofl

For your first video - OUTSTANDING! :fridayFlippin Fantastic! Good Job! I love the song choice (by Mephiskapheles?) - Nice ;)

Careful now- making videos can be addicting- Good video.

:head NO MORE BUMBLEBEES! Im just joking. Good movie. Music could use a little work. I guess I should have assumed it, but I didnt think that carp would be that sedate during the winter. You just grabbed one by the tail right? I dont kill things that dont want/have a chance to elude me. My native american heritage also says I shouldnt kill things I dont eat, however because carp are invasive, and I use them for fertilizer on the corn which I eat, I guess I can technically get away with it, but not during winter. They just seem so lazy. I couldnt bring myself to do it. Now the panfish on the other hand... Looked great! :inlove

I should mention that I used video form a few different outings to put that together.

On days when the pipe is on the water temps can climb as high as 64F degrees and the fish are active- which is why we need the guns, although I've been playing around with a sling to make it more sporting.

On the days when the pipe is not on the water temp is 34F and I don't even bother bringing a gun into the water- which is why I could hand catch those carp- and then let them go.

Small carp can be smoked and are pretty good to eat- I have eaten them. Panfish are always good to eat and my kids love them.

As far as the song goes, I decided a little bit of SKA would be a nice change from all the head banging rock and roll that Unirdna and Whopperhead seem to always put in their movies. roflrofl ;)

The first thing my wife asked me when I was finished was if she ever had to hear that song again- definitely not a fan.

ha ha. would anyone be able to get away saturday, sunday or monday? Some guys around here are interested. And Im trying to see what the logistics are at the least. open cell would deffinatly be preferred but could one rent a thick wetsuit? alright.

nevermind, one guy pulled out. were not going to do it anymore

Went to the OUTLET on Sunday 2-24-08. The pipe was NOT on and the water temp was 36-37 degrees. There were about a dozen or so Carp hanging out and quickly got the 'heck out of dodge' after i started shooting. I ended up getting 2 of them. There were about 30-40 Bluegills hanging out and a few Largemouth Bass. The water was only open for about 50feet. i tried breaking up some of the ice to cover more area- but it wasn't worth the effort. JON got to try out some different camera equipment. Jon was even able to catch a bluegill with his hand. It was a slippery little bugger and got away. We stayed in the water for about an hour - hour and a half. But still had a good time.

Scott,

I know I got a couple of great shots of you with the camera, but am still waiting to get the photos emailed to me. I'm not sure how the video turned out.

Water was cold (36F) but there were a bunch of fish when we first got there. I hand caught two- one carp and one bluegill. I was going to try and hand feed some musky, but they took off pretty much as soon as we arrived.

I also got to try out a couple of camera systems that my father-in-law owns. The first was a new Sea&sea DX-1G. I was VERY impressed with the photos it shot and the video wasn't half bad either. Since it's lees than a third of the price of a DSLR setup it just might be my next rig.:) I also got to use his 3-chip JVC video camera and decided that it was just to big to try and muscle around while freediving.:head

I'll post pics as soon as I get them- we had problems uploading them for some reason yesterday and I still don't know why.

Hit the OUTLET again today for about an hour and a half. Water temp was about 32-36 degrees f. I'm not good with the Metric system or any other foreign language but in Celsius I would have to guess it is about -1000 degrees and that's a FACT! rofl Basically we broke ice to get around. I ended up shooting 2 carp and about 5 Bluegill for friend of JONs looking for a meal. Total he ended up taking home about 12 Bluegills. Jon also ended up getting 2 carp and dotey got 1 carp and claims he missed a Record size Carp. My toes froze and it hurt to walk- But IT WAS STILL FUN!!!!

It certainly seemed colder than last weekend- even though the outlet was on full blast yesterday morning when I checked. Temps range from 32F all the way up to 36F.rofl

My wife noticed a red mark on my forehead from all of the ice sheets i swam into headfirst. I even got a video clip of dotey doing the same thing- I attached a still frame from the moment of impact.:head

We broke away quite a bit of ice to out to the weed beds- enough of a workout for anyone in a day. I ended up with a couple of carp and the guy I knew was VERY happy with his fish dinner. He's a die-hard bow hunter who's pretty excited to give it a try once the water warms up. Seems to me that's the same way Whopperhead and Taz got into this sport. ;)

A couple more pics of the big muskies, because that never gets old, and Scott breaking through some of Wisconsin's finest. :friday

yeah defintely a workout just put one arm on top of the water and break and break and sudden stop as your head hit another piece of ice you broke off before but hey it was fun and is finally good to be in the water with you cold feet and all it was still a blast

Man...You guys make me jealous! :head

I wish I could be there....Oh well, there's always next winter...

See you guys soon I hope! :)

Nice pics as always!

BTW - The Madison lakes chain holds some super sized bluegills...I've caught 11 inchers icefishing on Mendota, Monona, & Kegonsa lakes. Bigger ones were down the hole just lookin' at my bait though! :blackeye

I'll have to get up there early this spring hopefully...I'll try to hit Kegonsa. Thats where I saw the REALLY, really big ones.

Jon...Have you ever dove in Kegonsa before? Was there good vis at all if so? How 'bout them bluegills in Madison hey...You can't find 'em much bigger anywhere!

Dan,

I dove Kegonsa a few years ago as part of a lake clean up dive. I was not impressed with the lake. Many lakes have a green tinge to them because of the algae- this lake was brown.:yack I dove it during the clearest time of year and the vis was still crap- check out the pictures for yourself. I didn't even see that many fish in there so I didn't feel cheated by not having my gun along. I think that I read someone's dog died after swimming in there a couple of summers ago because of the problems they have with blue green algae- the poisonous stuff.:rcard

The lake to dive, during the two weeks a year that you can actually see anything, is Waubesa! She has more fish per cubic foot of water than any other lake in this part of the state. Even on her clear days you can't use more than a 75cm gun, but the pay off is big- more fish than I've ever seen.

For bluegills, like that 10.5" I just got, you've got to hit Mendota. That lake has schools of them in the hundreds. The lake gets busy, but not Lake Geneva busy, and the pay off is worth it. For some reason it has way more fish than anything I've seen in Waukesha county. You have to hit it early season or late, because once you get into June she's shot until October with all of the algae in there.

Jon,

Thanks for the tips....Awesome! :)

:naughty Blue-Green Algae......:yack.......:hungover

I'll stay away from Kegonsa!

Yeah, it's pretty nasty.

Those pictures actually make it look better than it was because I used a INON dome port wide angle lens and only had to be two feet away from the divers to get their whole bodies in the frame. I couldn't get those shots with the rig I use now.

Hey Jon, the video was nicely done, it has interesting transitions. Do you have a pet Muskie?

I just drove by the outlet but couldn't dive- busy watching my son.

I did see Dusten cleaning up on the carp- the water is so clear that we got to watch him shoot two from up by the street! Pipe is on and the warm water is flowing. I don't know what the temp is but Dusten said he was sweating! I can hardly wait to see what he posts- I'm sure he'll be a lot closer to winning that speargun by time he's done today.:martial

Jon

I should have drove up there this morning. I went out to the local lake to check it out. I expected a little ice, maybe a film. It was 2" thick next to shore with a few patches of water around. It's probally going to be the end of April to mid March. I want to go one time before Florida, but my wife is probably not going to let that happen :(
