The Outlet 2008

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
Today was interesting- I saw lots of Big Carp. But After I shot the 1st shot off my HammerHead- I couldn't get the spear to lock back in. So, I went with my JBL Woody which is down to 2 bands. I had a couple not go all the way through and ended up ripping out :head I did see a vast number of different fish out in the weed beds. No Pans with any size- but they are getting there. I probably could of stayed out all day- But i guess I have to sleep.

Wow...That carp looks HUGE!!! What did you weigh it on? It looks bigger than 36 pounds - But pictures can be a bit deceiving...But your're not even 'thrusting" the fish toward the camera...That thing looks HUGE!!! I hope you are using a good scale!

Yesterday I went out and bought a scale "just" for weighing carp...I just did'nt trust my bathroom scale anymore...It now seems to be OFF by 10 pounds???...Never-the-less....You guys put my 21 pounder to shame...Even if it was 31 pounds! :crutch

Jon, Is that a "Common" or a "Buffallo" ? Buffallo Carp tend to get a bit larger than the "Common" Carp...If It's a common...Holy cow man!!! :blackeye

Sorry about taking the lead in the Crappie AND Bluegill categorie's...NOT! But this dang JBL needs to be replaced with a new gun more suitable for panfish! It'll hafta do for now! :t

I can pretty much hit whatever I aim at now! But it HAS to be close, or I have to get close...If only I had a little more range!!!

I was planning on hitting the outlet today- but this cold that I have is kicking my butt. I'm not going today (monday 5/12/08)- Sorry. dotey - here's your chance to 'catch-up'.

Ok- after being outside and seeing how nice it is- I'm going. dotey and myself should be there around noon-ish if anyone cares to join us- We should be there till about 3pm -

oh yeah we are going to slay some carp fo sure :martial just hope old whopps HH holds up and can keep up with my AMI 2 LOL but Bgill if you decide to get a new gun let me know cause this AMI 2 is a good gun fo sure well for the price that is

The Pipe was On. About 66 degrees. The Vis outside the pipe was great! About 20 feet! There were Carp everywhere. So, I decided to be picky. We only had about 2.5 hours of spearing to do. I put on a little show for some guys watching from the OUTLOOK- they seemed to enjoy that. I did see a fairly large Sturgeon- -that was cool. Alot of Bass have moved in and there were panfish all over in the weeds. The water Temp outside the Pipe flow was about 61.

One of the carp i shot did not have an eye- I mean it was NEVER there. It was born like that. - It was really strange. Straight out from the ELK'S I saw this INLET type thing- there were alot of Common Carp hanging around there. I decided not to bring my camera today :head - I figured I'd be busy shooting fish. I wish I would of brought it. There were so many fish.

Once again I had problems with my HH- I'm going to have to talk with them.

I ended up shooting and stringing 11 carp. dotey got 6 carp

ALSO- I shot this one Carp and it kept spinning like a gator and twisted the tip of the speargun off and the spear slid out of the ring! Luckily for me I had already ran the stringer through him/her. After about 10 minutes of Looking I found my spear.

Heading to the OUTLET Today- will be there around 12:30pm (ish) till Probably Sunset. The Plan: SEEK & DESTROY CARP! - Anyone wanting to go- See you there. Sunny skies/ NW Winds- should be fairly decent. The HammerHead is coming off the DL and ready for action!

Tryin' out the turkey fryer today....But you KNOW where I'd rather be!!!!

But hey...Family time is ALWAYS a good thing! I'll probably head out AFTER my jobs on Thursday & Friday...Close to a couple'a lakes I've been wanting to try out...Namely, Big Cedar.

I'm working on making my own version of a "Shardana" type float by OMER...It'll be fiberglass and gelcoat with a foam core, gear straps and a drybox, not to mention a flag and "weighted skeg's" to make it track straight. It will also be gelcoated to look like a dive flag in Hi-Vis red with a white diagonal line.

If it turns out niceI MAY make a few more for some of my "select" dive buddie's - Or one for the "contest"!!!! I'm pretty good with "the glass"...Afterall, fiberglass & Gelcoat is my job! So I have MOST of the materials "on hand"...

I hope you guy's put "the smackdown" on some GIANT fish today...Good luck...I'll see ya on Memorial day!

Ted and I went out this morning- we both had family obligations this afternoon, otherwise we would have gone with ya'.

We looked at Waubesa and it's almost ready. Of course, when it does go clear you have about 10 days to dive it before it goes green. :head

Next we stopped in Squaw bay for a peak- too much wind t dive. After that we went up and dove a park a few blocks east of the Outlet. Water there was very pretty and we did see some giant sized bass- looks like they were on steroids!:martial Lots of pike, musky, walleye, and other things we can't shoot. There were tons of carp everywhere we went, but they must have known they weren't on the menu for today because they kept coming up to me and checking me out- close! I even had to push some of them away with the tip of my gun. It would have been easy picken's, but without the Scott's truck I had no where to dump them so wasn't going to shoot them.

I did see schools or perch, bluegills and a few crappie, but, and this is a huge but, they were all on the small size. If I can't get a decent fillet off the fish I wasn't going to bother shooting it. Ted had similar luck.

It wasn't a wasted day because it was a new spot to dive and the water was clear. Lots of pretty plants and some nice drop offs to hang out on. Water was about 55F and we got to swim for a few hours- so no going to the gym today.

I stopped by the outlet later on, with my kids in tow, but you guys were WAY down the lake- almost to the terrace. Looks like it was a good swimming day for everyone.

Jon

The Discharge pipe was not on. The Carp weren't around like they have been in the past. dotey was kill'n them though. He ended up with 11. I ended up with 6. I saw some nice sice Perch. But, I'm leary of eating fish out of that lake. I also saw some HUGE Walleyes in about 15 FOW. I too got a water temp reading of 55. The HH was working for about 3 shots then- had "the problem" again :head:rcard.

:rcardOH! dotey almost shot me! I saw him swimming towards me then all of a sudden his spear lands about 3 feet in front of me! I said "What the F*$K are you doing!?!" He said "Shooting at that carp" I said "That was ME!!!!!" So, if you go out with dotey- might want to keep your distance. :rcard

Still had a good day- we spent about 4.5 hours in the water. :crutch Dispite getting shot at- Had Fun.

PICS: 1st-messed up Perch, 2nd- GAR, 3rd- Nice Walleye! 4th- dotey REALLY likes Carp :naughty , 5th-My 6 Carp

i got 11 carp today so that has my total so far at 43 :martial and i was shooting at a carp scott was just in the way no really i didnt even know he was there the last time i looked for him he was alot farther away i didnt know he was there intill i was pulling my spear in and i then saw him so yeah it was a close call and wont happen again so nobody has to be scared to dive with me. all in all it was a good day we swam all over the outlet today sucks for scott that his HH is out of order again but my AMI worked great (Sorry no pics i worked to fast for scott and he didnt gat any pics but you can ask him)

Your lucky you found your shaft. I had a spinner take my tip, and I was so worried about losing the fish I just grabbed it, and let the shaft and line fall in about 30 FOW. Lost it and it was on a "Balco Sub" it was a gun a lot like the modern HH's. Unfortunately the shaft was very unusual, and I talked to ray oder a little bit about it, but we never got down to anything.

Have you tried other shafts in there to see if a Riffe, Omer, RA or some other shaft will lock in? I can't find a pic of a Balco spear.

The the notch was a crazy design. It had fins on either side of the shaft, and then like a half moon notch in the bottom. Heres a "cross-section"

First, with the corrosion, you may want to take the sear off and make a pattern and/or have another one made to match it. I know someone that does metal work, so it's easy for me to say.

The half moon is a common notch. I'd be curious if another shaft would lock in. The tabs would be guides of course, but I think you can do without them. Is the top flat? It looks like it is, like other brands of shafts. If you dive with others from the board, try their shaft(s).

Regrettably the top is not flat, its round...

How thick is the sear? Enough to keep a shaft from rolling? Also, if you can find a shaft that will lock in and hold, Ray could prolly put tabs on one he already has.

Hey whopper, I dont think that one picture is a walleye. Looks like a perch mate. If it were a walleye its eyes would be cloudy, and its fins would have white tips. But thats just based on the picture.
