It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
Apparently they were popular in the 'olden days', before refridgeration, because they travelled so well - and even improved with age

Thanks for last night, good to see you again guys and meet you too Highlander. Like Highlander I saw a lot of undersized Pollock although I did have my sights on a nice one the size of my forearm & hand, I just missed it as it shot off out of range. One thing I did see was a lot of crab and a good sized lobster but didn't have a bag to carry them in - gutted. Does anyone bother catching them? Size wise the biggest crab I saw was around 8" across the shell....
If anyone has ideas or tips for cooking they'd be much appreciated.
Cheers, roll on next Tuesday!

Ignoring the cheek... fish are supposed to have a shelf life of 8 days from capture provided they are on ice or refrigerated. That's what fishermen/fishmongers work on. Personally I eat fish within a day or I fillet it, freeze it and cook it from frozen.

Some fish are supposed to be better "aged". Bass for example have the guts left in commercially and ray and shark smell of ammonia when fresh due to having no bladder and excreting through their skin. Stories of sole, red mullet and other species being better with age abound.

I am not fond of sole anyway. Bit insipid for me but not bad with a sauce. I like plaice and mackerel best (fresh or fresh/frozen).

Dave.

Common term for three day old fish pot bait

Even in our top restaurants you can get pot bait - if its on the menu I can usually smell it coming from one end of the restaurant to the other - funny thing is.... some folk will eat pot bait & even say they like it!
Personally, I think they just dont know any better? :yack

I agree with you two - my cat won't eat 1 day old fish & I won't eat anything my cat would't eat so if I'm not gonna cook it the day I catch it, it goes in the freezer:yack

Hey guys, havent posted anything for a little while so thought i'd say a quick hello. sounds like im missing out on these club dives, am back in wales at the moment with no spearo action at all as im getting ready to go away for a while, if i get the chance to pop home one weekend i will try and get in the water, maybe even try and sneak back for a club dive but probably wont have the chance .
Any way keep up the good work and have a great season, make sure you catch some on behalf of me .
Ash

Agreed.

I only eat very fresh fish that I know exactly when and where it was caught, which means that I rarely eat restaurant fish.

Having said all that, I've got a huge blind spot when it comes to cod and chips from the fish n' chip shop - I'll eat that stuff all day long.

.

Hi

So gentlemen, Club dive tomorrow night, where are we off to then?

I have done Durleston a few times now & was wondering if anyone had any other ideas, looking at Windguru looks like we have southerlies. I think Lulworh & Ringstead will be out & possibly Durleston.
Only place that I know of is Newtons Cove or Sandsfoot(Castle Cove) inside the wall. Studland? Poole Harbour? I'm just throwing names out there.

Do any of the other experienced guys want to comment?

The Maldives?

I'm up for it & I'm sure my missus will be, but maybe a little too far for a club dive.

If anyone has a private jet let me know & I'll sort you out for the beers, banana mamas, Mojitos or any cocktail for that matter.

Who needs the Maldives when we have the Costa Del Dorset.

I will be joining you for 2mrws dive, dependant on location (don't wont to be to far away from the pregnant wife, will never live it down if I miss the birth!). Finished this birthing relaxation course and can know get on with the serious business of fishing, at least untill the birth!

Goodo,

what do you think about Newtons or castle cove Kev? Are tides/viz ok & of course near enough to immenent arrival

Newtons cove should be well protected and fishable on the rising tide, will call my spearo buddy who works at the marine reseach lab that over looks the cove for viz report 2mrw to see if its a goer.

Castle cove is a nice spot but close to restricted areas such as the inner harbour walls, people can get quite funny about it possibly not the best place for the wessex club to show there skills!

If I'm still around guys i will try and make it, managed to get some more time off before i go away, just waiting for a phone call...lets hope it doesn't come tomorrow.
Managed to get in today with cesar, not a very eventful dive though as no fish of size were seen. Some nice looking lobsters in some pots around the area so might have to get myself a pot for next year.
