Wessex Spearfishing Club 2010

62 Wrasse, That’s disgusting!!!!!!:rcard:rcard:rcard:rcard
Is it any wonder that the spearing competition scene is more frowned upon than participated in by more and more spearo’s.
You can keep the BSA as I want nothing to do with it or its wasteful killing of a fish species that need not be killed.:rcard:rcard:rcard:rcard

Just out of interest, what happens to the wrasse afterwards?

Regards,
Dave.

I think they go to the lobster fishermen, as pot bait.

Personally, I'm strongly against spearing wrasse for the sake of a competition.

Well i did want to put it like that in my earlier post but i didnt want to say it because im fairly new on the forum, and to spearfishing - it was exactly what i was thinking though. I do frequent the Ringstead area and do occasionally catch but leave the Wrasse alone

Whole heartedly agree with evryone's comments maybe someone in the BSA hierarchy should read this thread and listen to our opinions!

Shame they don't have an official thread on here, where's the sport in spearing Wrasse if you are good enough to compete!? :head:head :head:rcard:rcard:rcard

Any chance we can move this topic away from the Wessex Club thread - we try to shield ourselves against the world outside by sticking our heads in the sand and thinking only about positive, club related, issues, if we can help it :).

If we all want to begin a serious and constructive discussion on the merits and drawbacks of competition spear fishing, maybe we should initiate a new thread.

Is that ok with everyone? :)

Let's keep that warm, fuzzy, friendly feeling going in the enchanted land of Wessex.

totaly agree Gaz, someone ( maybe Podge ?) start a debate on the main forum and lets keep the Wessex thread to our usual positive subjects.

I know a lot a people are not keen on mullet however I prefer eating them to Bass. One thing always bothers me is how difficult they are to dispatch - anyone have a quick & effective solution?

And keep on the spear! Lost a few when I first started out! You have to be quick grabbing the buggers.

I usually just go for the head stab and twist the knife around a few times until they go limp...

As with most fish but especially mullet - a knife up into the gills & spine will do the job & bleed off blood at the same time.
You dont have to sever the spine, it seems just a few hard prods around the bone is sufficient to dispatch them quickly but rough up the gills too & you will be amazed at how much blood is released.
Mullet are not always the most palatable fish & having to deal with bloody fillets is just another handicap when trying to get them as palatable as possible!

Yeahh
Slippery fish,I do exactly like Tunny and I also lose them of the spear, now I try to spear them if I am closed enough only.

Anyway just to report a fantastic dive yesterday with Tonny and later on comanche killer (I believe). We went to Newtons cove ,the south wind has been stirring pretty much all the nice spots in the Purbecks,we went on rising tide and viz was amazing ,beautiful,Tonny got a big bass (5 pounds),I got a flattie then I lost my goody bag full of spiders (1 was just enormous) ,not happy,so I went back trying to find it,no way Jose!!,but at least I found a nice size bass on the way that came with papa (not as big as Tonny's but it fed 4 ),I could not believe my luck it was taken at 1-2 m depth and from the surface!!!.Great dive ,great company,I wonder how comanche killer did??
So if anybody find a goody bag there ,well....eat the crabs but please send me a PM.
I hope everybody is ok .
I will miss next tuesday club dive I am afraid ,my little boy's birthday (2 y old ,such a cuteee).

I forgot !sorry for the british who suport Murray (not that many....)VAMOS RAFA !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah the goody bag was filled of one of the biggest spider crab I've ever seen,it was huge.Nice day out and strange was that in the right hand side was no viz at all but straight and left hand side the viz was amazingly good.Comanche came out later with 3 nice bass in about 1 hour? Good fun and good company :friday:friday:friday

Well done on the dive Thursday & bad luck for your goody bag, just as well I didn't come as I was very much in demand for work.

No probs about Murray, maybe we will be sorry for Spain today, but I doubt it as it is Uraguay.........................

Just got back from an early morning run to Durlston, again some good vis and two adverage bass taken.
Nearly speared a cormerant as it came passed chasing the bait fish, noticed it had feathers at last second, lol, lovely to see though and a lovely morning to be out.

The cormerant chasing the little fish:Amazing!!!!
Unfortunately stuck at work this weekend.
VIVA SPAIN !!

Kev I noticed that you had a camera on your gun. Anything to show us?:)

First Bass would have made an amazing spearo movie a shoal of bass 20 strong all 3 -5lb biggest fish at the back. Great viz. Good dive about one minute in and then boom! I gave him the bad news. Looked at my camera realised it had turned off NO MEMORY card:head:head:headuntill the next time.....!!!

Nice to meet you cesar if only briefly. Sorry I didn't come accross your goody bag and monster crab.
