AIDA Results Register

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
I am still going on adding data, fixing them, and improving the interface. Today, on the request of the AIDA Propaganda Master (is that your correct title Sebastian?), I added some more global statistics, so that he can fill the media and sponsors with our incredible growth rates

The report is available either through the menu - there is a new report type "growth stats" in the third select box. And of course, as everywhere else, also here you can restrict the report to specific scope (federation, gender, discipline, country,...). You'll get a table numbers of competitions, competitors, performances, and some other details in individual years. It comes with a simple bar graph for easier overview of the data.

You can also bookmark and access the stats directly through the Permalinks shown at the top of the menu. For example this one for global stats of AIDA (competitions/performances of other federations excluded):

http://apnea.cz/ranking.html?AIDA+md:grow

And if you select a specific year in the menu, you get monthly stats in given year - that may be helpful for example for organizers who search a quiet period for adding their new competition.

Thanks, Stephan!

I've just added another small (but important) detail to the Growth Report I mentioned in my previous post. There is now a new column - Max, showing the maximal performance in the given period (year at global reports, and month at annual reports). Like the other columns, it comes with both numerical and graphical output, so that you can easily see the progress curve.

You can run diverse reports, and see the development of maximal performances since 1999, or within a given year. You can run reports for individual disciplines, for discipline combos, global, national, and continental reports, or the progress of performance within a club. And not only that, you can now see also the progress curves of individual freedivers - just enter the name of a competitor (or pick him/her in a list), choose a discipline or a combo, and run the "growth report".

In fact I plan adding a bit more complex graphs and analysis later, so consider this just a simple teaser.

I added also about 10 more older competitions, especially Polish and Ukrainian ones (thanks Mattbigblue, and Osusim!). However, there is still more than 30 competitions missing. I am really puzzled over it, because I contacted all of the organizers, and national AIDA boards weeks ago, so they are aware that the results are missing. And they have paid relatively important sums to have the results in the ranking. Although I do not get anything of it, I do not understand that they don't care. Well, I am afraid I cannot do more for them.

Hi Ivo,

I seem to be having all manner of grief accessing the rankings from my work computer. Every time I click on one of the reports (eg. any of the highlighted popular reports) it takes me back to the opening page APNEA.cz - Ranking? , where I have to start the process all over again. If I am lucky enough to access a report, when I change a variable such as Sex or Country it reverts back to the opening page again. I managed to get as far as opening the Global Static report and filtering for Women which gave me 100 entries on the page, but when I clicked on the Next button it gave me performances 101-200 but they were exactly the same as 1-100 (eg performance 101 was Natalia Molchanova's 8:03 STA).

Do you know what could be going on here? I'm using IE 6.0.

Cheers,
Ben

Hi Ben,

As for the pages other than the first one - I am aware I introduced the bug this week, but did not yet have time to fix it. Will do it asap.

As for resetting to the starting page, I did not see it happening yet, but then again, I tested it with only about 10 different browsers (MISE7, MSIE8, Firefox, Opera, Chrome, Mac Firefox, ...) but not with MSIE 6. However, rather standard code is used that should be compatible with other browsers too. It would be interesting to know if there are other users having the same problems. Also it would be nice if you could try accessing it from another computer, or downloading an alternative browser (such as Google Chrome). Please let me know the result anyway. I will try to find some old PC with MSIE6, and test it on it.

Cheers Ivo. I suspect that it is some sort of company-imposed restrictions on our internet browser, I have huge problems with the new AIDA website at work too (none of the menus work). I haven't checked for a few weeks but at home on Firefox the rankings have worked fine. I'm just having a slow week at work and want to knock a few AIDA-related things off my "to do" list during work hours rather than staying up to 1am every night like I usually do

Cheers

Well, if you cannot install an alternative browser in the work, or update the IE to a more recent version, you can always browse through the ranking by attaching diverse parameters to the address. I already described it earlier in this thread, but basically you can append year, sex, discipline, country anme or code, federation, competitor name or ID, and many other parameters to the address line to get the respective report.

For example http://apnea.cz/ranking.html?2009+AU+DNF+M
or http://apnea.cz/ranking.html?Noble

The order of the parameters does not matter. More examples earlier in this thread.

That's a nifty tool! Exactly what i'm after, thanks.

On a sidenote, my results look like they include some comps I never competed in, looks like they are all sourced from Freedive Central. I'll go through it later and send you a list.

Cheers,
Ben

Yes, t is possible, the database of FC was broken a few days back, so some I may need to clean up some results that were imported in that time.

The new AIDA site is quite javascript-intensive, so if "none of the menus work", I would guess your security policy has javascript turned off. So you might try to tinker it on if you have the priviledeges.

On a side note, IE6, oh how I wish it was never made, but alas it was and still abundantly out there. But basically, any other browser in the world is better from almost any perspective.

Well, if JavaScript is turned off, the APNEA.cz website shows a warning telling it to the user, that cannot be overseen, so I guess Ben would see it. There could be also firewal filtering some active content, but it can be simply just a problem with the IE v6, which indeed has plenty of bugs.

You guys are probably both right. I work for a government-owned organisation and we have fairly heavy restrictions to internet at work, although I don't get an error message about JavaScript Ivo so I can't comment on that. Here at home now everything works perfectly on both IE 8 and Firefox 3.6.

Cheers,
Ben

I think I can add an alternative method for browsing the ranking, that will work also without JavaScript. I will look at it and post here later.

Benny, just please send me the list of the FDC results that do not belong there - I thought I already cleaned all, but apparently there were more of them sneaking in than I noticed. And of ocurse, if anyone else sees some wrong results or other inconsistences, please report them (either here, or by PM, or by email to ivo at apnea cz)

After a longer time I updated again the ranking with new results.

The delay had several causes - besides a busy schedule, summer time and holidays, it was also the growing frustration. I developed the ranking system because I saw no willingness to do it within the organization. I hoped to move it forwards, and especially I hoped that other developers will follow, and will help building a more complete system including also registration based on the Freedive Central software that would eliminate the manual work currently needed for filling the ranking database.

So when I developed the ranking and filled it with cleaned-up data for the 10 past years, I also proposed AIDA going on entering the data of new competitions free of charge until an automated system is in place, where results will be filled directly online by the organizers or judges on place and live. I expected it would take just a very few days to port the FC software and starting to use it. I do not know what happened, but it looks like the project is dead - I did not hear about it since many months, and instead of having the data going into the database directly and automatically from the competitions, I still have to go on importing them manually. It is a giant hassle for many reasons - organizers mostly do not send any results at all, so I have to run after them, and beg them for the data, often during many months. And when they finally send them (if at all), they are mostly in unusable (for example PDF files), incomplete, incompatible, and in an inconsistent format that is either completely unusable, or requires many hours of inconvenient manual work.

I really hope the situation changes very quick, and that the registration system is put online and enforced to all organizers, since the situation starts being unbearable, and I am not sure how much longer I can afford going on in this way.

The most surprising and frustrating is that organizers do not care at all about the results, and often do not bother sending them even when politely asked for it. So for example I had to remind the organizers of the WC2010 several times, and got the results only with great delay, weeks after the WC was finished. And the file I received was in unusable format, with missing information (i.e. no AP's, penalties, cards, notes, and without performances of openers), so I had to retype the data from the screenshots I found on the web.

So as I wrote, the ranking is now updated, but there are still many competitions missing. You can see the list of missing competitions here: APNEA.cz - Ranking

In total there are 45 missing competitions, and if you select only the year 2010 and only AIDA competitions, there are 17 of them. If you participated on any of them, you have certainly paid for the results to go into the ranking, so I encourage you to contact the organizer and ask explanation why they did not send the results to AIDA (or perhaps asking money back). Well, I do not get any of the money (this is a free service), but find it really outrageous that organizers are not able to send a simple email with the spreadsheet they already anyway have. It would cost them 20 seconds of their time.

This is a shame, but it was also a known fact before you started your valuable ranking platform. It seems to me that, in addition to petitioning for more results here, you should make sure that the AIDA sports officer knows about this and he/she should be responsible of dealing with the organizers, including putting them on a black list until they oblige.

On the other hand, I see that at least some of the competitions for which you miss data are fully available on freedivecentral (e.g. Zurich August 2010, SPOT June 2010) so perhaps it is also a matter of clarifying what are the proper AIDA channels.

I am posting a reminder on the AA forum for the italian ones.

Thanks, Pete, it was in fact already in the ranking, just the competition was listed twice, since it was registered under different names in AIDA Calendar, and at Freedive Central. I did not notice it originally, but merged the two duplicate records now, so it is fine. Organizers using Freedive Central indeed save me a lot of work (assuming they upload the results there, which is unfortunately not always the case), because I can import data from FC automatically.

This is also why I am upset about AIDA's decision not to enforce the use of FC in the meantime before developing own system. I proposed that solution last year. Paolo with Francisco offered the code of FC to AIDA for free, and I expected it to be ported to the AIDA's server quick. If I knew it would take a year (or perhaps more) to get it working, I would refuse doing this enervating work of data assembly, and would rather develop a quicker systematic solution.

I see incorrect STA point's for all results of Indoor Cup Tateyama 2010 (both men and women).

Hey Ivo,

WWC2010 results are on the LSFC website, in pdf unfortunately. If you want the original spreadsheets, try emailing Kathryn? I'm in Dahab and therefore useless to you.
