AIDA World championship indoor 2011- Lignano

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
If Goran Golak's World record dynamic performance isn't approved, AIDA will look rather bad in the eyes of the general public, and WE freedivers will have a lot of explaining to do.

Just imagine that the volunteer safetydiver does happen to NOT like you winning. Or he's just ecstatic and forgets to step back and wait? Maybe he somehow trips, is pushed, is clumsy etc, would this kill a WR?

Well in the past it did for Tom Sietas, being touched too soon after his WR 10'05" static in Greece. Thankfully he had enough energy to do it again the next day, but euh at a WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP there is NO next day...

I think freediving just got injured again by another relic of a rule that needs fundamental maintenance.

The NEXT thing is that WR's will only be attempted seriously at private record attempts where the athletes has liberty to start when he pleases and have multiple record days that provides more security that all the i's are dotted and t's are crossed.

This is bad for Goran, bad for AIDA, bad for the safetydiver - whom I'm confident will not sleep much for the coming days and the sport Freediving in general.

Maybe I'm just to early in my judgements, but hopefully those involved hear of the freediver's strong sentiments and THINK AND WEIGH all their options carefully so as they can give a response to Goran, the community and the world as to why their decision was the right one.

In Anglo Saxon law a jury of one's peers can choose to NOT declare one guilty when the law does not match their sense of acting in good conscience. I hope our AIDA Jury will also act in good conscience.

I remember discussing exactly such case with Bill Stromberg (I think it was here on DB, so it should be possible to find it again) when he still was the President and the main judge. He explained that when a safety touches you by mistake or without any reason, the protest would be always approved. Only when it is your own coach, or someone from your team, you have no chance with the protest. And that was exactly the case with Tom - I believe the safety at his record attempt was his team friend. Let's see whether the opinion of the Judge Jury in Lignano is the same. If not, I'd recommend Goran to fire a protest against the Jury through the Disciplinary Commission. I would help him finding out the old discussion with Bill, and other similar cases in the past that were handled properly.

Red cad revoked! GORAN WON! New WR 273m! Congrats Goran!!!

Huge performance and an incredibly clean SP!

Goran got a white card, congratulations for the amazing performance!!!

I got penalized for grab/touch when surfacing on my 261m. I protested, because my nose was already out of water and my mouth was coming out of water at the same time as I grabbed the edge of the pool. But apparently that's still worth minus 10 meters. Doesn't matter though, I never imagined I could do a dive like that, I still get the same medal as I would even if the protest went through. Only thing is that it's not a national record. But whatever. :t

Congrats, Mikko! Huge performance! The 10m penalty for a grab is a real shame. We should all join forces and vote it out of the rules.

All the athletes supported Goran's protest, and signed a petition. That sort of thing is one of the very best things about this wonderful sport. The lobby totally went off when we were told by the judges that the right outcome had been achieved.

Off to bed to try and catch a few zzzz's before statics tomorrow morning.

Well technically Mikko, according to the italian announcers :duh you are from the US of A and 261m would be a national record here

In all seriousness congratulations on an excellent dive - lots of wonderful performances to watch via the live stream and huge respect to Goran - amazing dive of 273.

Great comp even if the commentators were rubbish:rcard

Now, what happened to Alexey and Fred in the last heat?

Surely Alexey and or Fred had a chance to do WR too?

Is it just me or does anyone else think that Goran must be the calmest person on the planet? I am sure I would have looked a bit more annoyed than that if that happened to me! :ko :head

Anyway happy ending, SO glad it was put right - congratulations on a massive dive Goran, extraordinary! :king

Congrats to Goran, Mikko, Guy and Bjarte!

In the case where the safety diver touches the athlete for no reason, the SAFETY DIVER should be disqualified from the competition and further events.

That's a but tough Eric, being a safety kinda sucks some times, you get caught up in the stress and emotion and mistakes happen :duhAn obligatory safety diver training course on this level events, would be great, and eliminate some of the co..ups.

Better just make the rules to suit the camaraderie of the sport. Ditch the grab thing too. Can anyone explain how the grab thing could possibly get you any advantage? Oh, and ditch it before my first aida pool comp in one month too

One problems with both those rules (touch, grab) is that during normal training, you'd do exactly the opposite to be safer. e.g. after your buddy finishes their static in training, you'd maintain contact ready to intervene if needed.

Having said that, I can see some rationale for both rules Simon - in the same way you can't be pushing off the bottom of the pool or the sides, you can't grab and push yourself forward etc (even by a little).

The main issue is that (especially the grab issue) is so easy (at least in my view) to amend the rules and ensure that it's allowed but cannot be abused for gaining distance OR (as Eric pointed out) to make it so that the potential distance gained (we're talking nothing here) is the same for everyone.

There are so many other rules that are like this (e.g. the distance from the start when your airways need to be in the water etc).

I have to say that while I think the grab rule should be amended, I don't think it's as big an issue as the one with the safety. At least the grab rule is well understood, it is what it is and it's entirely up to the competitor to ensure they don't break it.

But the issue with safeties touching you is something beyond the competitor's control and apart from mistakes, it could even be abused - just doesn't make sense to be disqualified for someone else's mistake! (similarly I don't think that DQ the safety is the best answer)
